Best game on AB, that I've played, and one of the best games ever, anywhere:
Ultima Underworld - The Stygian Abyss
I guess I'll join that one, adding Ultima Underworld II - Labyrinth of Worlds to it.

UFO for sure. so many hours of gameplay and well ahead of its time.
It hasn't really been improved upon in the sequels as well.
I guess that if I didn't mention Civilization, Darklands, Flashback, Pirates, Prince of Persia, Star Control 1 and 2 and X-Wing myself, perhaps nobody would, and then this thread would be invalid.

XCOM: UFO is definitely my favorite. Master of Orion is a close second.
XCOM: UFO is the only game to ever make me seem compulsive. The first occassion that I played it, I was so enthralled that I ended up being seven hours late for a meal that I promised to cook (she has since forgiven me, and even lets me play the game). I had been playing for nearly twelve hours, when I finally got out of the chair.

I think that the DOS games I played as a kid - Pharaoh's Tomb, Duke Nukem, Crystal Caves, Monuments of Mars, and Chip's Challenge - are still my favorites today (except Crystal Caves: the difficulty/fun ratio is a little too high there, for me). A lot of that could be just nostalgia, but for whatever reason, I still say Pharaoh's Tomb, with its wonderfully creepy four-color graphics, can beat out just about any other game. :)
Of the games I've discovered more recently, here on Abandonia, though, I'd say LOOM is the best. Something about the low-palette graphics is just really cool, and the concept of using music to interact with objects in an adventure game is absolutely unique!

Tough call. Betrayal at Krondor and Ultima VII are regarded by many RPGers as being among the finest games in the genre. Bandit Kings of Ancient China is arguably one of the best strategy titles, but as much can be said for Genghis Khan II and a few other KOEI games.

I really couldn't choose a best ever with all of the awesome titles available here, but I will put in a vote for Alone in the Dark. Lovecraftian survival horror ftw. This game used to terrify me when I was a kid...and it is still scary, but for completely unrelated reasons (polygon ugliness).

Back in 1992 my parents bought me my first PC: flatline desktop 80286 (8 MHz, Cyrus or something), 1024K RAM (yeah, baby!), Hercules graphics card, monochrome monitor, 3.5" disc and a whopping 45 MB HD (which was huge in those days! If people had a HD it usually was about 20 MB). Within a week I had games ofcourse. My first ones were: Sokoban, Bushido: The Way Of The Warrior (which I had to startup using a little tool called SimCGA), Their Finest Hour: Battle Of Britain and Prince Of Persia.
Prince Of Persia looked awesome (even in Hercules!), played easy and was like a movie on your PC: it had it all; action, adventure, cool story. So this has always stayed my favorit game!
Monkey Island? Loom? Lets stick to Loom, as it will probably get far less attention than the other.

UFO:Enemy Unknown is obviously the best one and has no competition in the areas it exists. It combined different genres into one awesome game.

This thread is obnoxious, less posts about how "EVERYTHING ELSE IS FAR BEHIND" because that's just annoying.
I mean, I like Wasteland, but it has its problems and in comparison there are RPG titles that can compete with it by excelling where it failed, but I'm not going to go on about how I'm damn right.
There may be some great games from back in the day, but don't let nostalgia or your poor ability to properly review and analyze a game because of its age get in the way, there's some stuff in this thread that was seriously only "great" if you had the taste for it back then, and it still applies now. This whole topic is just bait for people to start arguments about how Laser Squad is better than X-Com or how Generic Humorous Adventure Title #534 is better than Monkey Island or Day Of The Tentacle or whatever else there may be.
