View Full Version : Best Lan Games Of All Time
I know, there was a topic similar to this somewhere back there (in the Page of Forgotten Threads), but I'm starting this one for two main reasons:
1) To bring attention to the game FEAR Combat and it's Coop Warfare mod
2) To find games I could run out and buy for my friend's party this weekend
Now, on with the first point.
FEAR Combat is essentially just multiplayer ripped straight from the mouth of Sierra's brainchild and plays very well for something 100% free. That's right, it's completely free to download it and after you register for your CD-Key, you can begin to lose horribly against either your friends (LAN) or random fried-chicken scarfing strangers (Net Play). Either way, it's insanely fun and outrageously addictive...and if by now your PC can't run FEAR at highest settings then it may be time for you to let your current rig ascend to the heavens.
Back to my point, there's also a little mod for FEAR Combat called "Coop Warfare" that pits you and (at the very least) two other friends against hordes and hordes of the game's enemies. It includes new levels, weapons, and even character models!
It's really hard to state right here just how mind-numbingly difficult CW is (you and your friends will last 1 minute per respawn at the very most) but on the other hand it's also hard to state how much chaotic fun it can generate!
Give it a shot, guys:

Coop Warfare (http://fear.filefront.com/file/Coop_Warfare;75783)

Right then, on to point number two...what are your favorite LAN games of all time? I know my friends and I are all going to be fraggin' with Unreal Tournament and Doom, but I want to hear your favorites!

Don't like FEAR, never liked it.
Unreal (the first) in COOP, all the way, and plenty good maps around.
Or Doom3 COOP, LAN COOP heaven. Certainly with the classic doom mod.

Games that I(we) usually play in LAN:
- Rainbow Six: Raven Shield
- Ghost Recon
- Age of Empires 2
- Warcraft 3
- System Shock 2
Sometimes we (me and about 8 other players) start big Lan parties from 14.00 PM to 4 AM at my house...LOL...you can trust on my words, especially if you don't want to be bored after few hours.
Battlefield 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlefield_2) in Co operation mode, is really funny and addictive, I like it very much because players can be different, we always have a Medic, a Mechanical, a Support soldier with Ammo, a sniper...and around the net you can find great maps. (Rate 8/10)
Same thing for Battlefield 2142 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlefield_2142), addictive like the predecessor, but you play with Hi Tech weapons and vehicles, and there's Titan mode! (Rate 9/10)
If you don't have great machines you could play the good old Unreal Tournament (http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unreal_Tournament) (8/10) (or one of the series) or Quake III arena (Rate 7/10)...and don't forget Medal Of Honor (Rate 7/10) (really nice for fast deathmatches).
And finally this is different from the other but maybe the funniest ever...FlatOut 1 & 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FlatOut_2) (Rate 8/10)!
There's the descruction derby mode and you can select several cars (even a school Bus LOL), and soundtracks are lovely...
As you can see I didn't insert any RTS games, I like them don't worry, but they steal too much time and it's easy that somebody could not like them.
Have fun ^_^
Battlefield 2[/b]
Oh, but I wish I could!...Unfortunately, I'm not quite willing to go dish out 200 dollars for four other copies of B2...
Ehy ehy this is not my fault...you asked... ^_^
If you don't want to spend money you could download for FREE FarCry, or Re-Volt (from Abandonia!)
The first one allow you to play with extremely big and detailed maps (and vehicles!), but IMO the gameplay is a little slow for a Lan party...about the second take a look here (http://www.abandonia.com/games/en/908/ReVolt.htm) and read the review ;)

$200 for 4 coppies of BF2... where the hell are you getting these coppies at such an outrageous price? They cost 17.99 at EB Games in my city. With 200 dollars you should be able to buy about 10 coppies!
Well, I don't know about you, but where I live a copy of Battlefield 2 costs 50 dollars. And a copy of Bioshock costs 65 dollars...curses...

yah in Europe and lot's of other places these kind of games cost arround 50 $ if not EUR.
anyway... i liked to play settlers 3 in coop especially once i prepared the maps so that computer is more agressive. another thing that happened there was the massive armies that did the battles. it was cool.
yah well too bad farcry doesn't have the co-op. i mean there are soem mods on new maps but they haven't made one with original maps.
there is also delta force black hawk down (also with a 3rd party mod you can change it into coop).
serious sam is nice for some mindless fraging and battling against the hordes of enemies.
oh and of course Diablo 2. duh!

OH! gregor is right, I forget this great title!
Really funny and addictive, especially if you play it in co-op.
And fights with your friends are funny too ;)

Heh, you better be in good relationship with the fellow players when boss characters drop some super rare stuff. ;)
Right... <_<

It seems all we play in my halls of residence is Rise of Nations. It's incredibly good for LAN RTSing.
WHen we're in the mood for something else it tends to be Unreal Tournament (2003 usually).
EDIT: It it worth noting that I am the champion of Paston House in both of these games.

But loooool!Phobos is cool for a barbarian......thanatos......i don't know!:D my friend have a necromance(un necromante)at the 58 level,we are invincible!:D
Yeah, maybe we were too much fanatic...:p
My paladin was a 94L, and the other two barbarians were 89L.
Single player of course ;).
Diablo 2 is really funny at Lan parties...unfortunately people don't want to play it anymore.
This is the best source for Diablo2: The Arreat Summit (http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/)

Might as well play Hellgate London now, if you can get past the bugs.
Diablo 2 has a gay ass community anyway.

Since there aren't many active topics on this board and I'm bored (ha-ha), I'll enquire as to why no-one mentioned Operation Flashpoint here - it's brilliant fun over a LAN as long as you can get a few players together.
Having said that, I've had perfectly enjoyable matches with just one other person, sneaking our way into towns and stuff.
I guess it only works if the friend is reasonably good at the game.
Although I'm entirely against skill discrimination in shooters, I'd imagine OPF just gets frustrating for those who die within 30 seconds of a fight breaking out :p
Freelancer is great for LAN gaming, because you can basically just join forces and go on epic missions.
At the moment, though, king of my LAN sessions is the marvellous DEFCON. It runs on basically any computer from the mid 90s onwards, and the games can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours(!). There's something to be said for the perverse tranquility of watching nukes fly over the atlantic ocean in realtime.

lol Minigun... I tried to play OFP with my friends, only about 3 of them will play with me cause the others are playing WoW or are too noob. I love OFP, I've had it for a long time now and I used to play multiplayer a lot! Especially with the CTI Mode (Turns game into RTS/FPS Hybrid, really fun!)

OFP is really an awesome game, though I wish I could play ARMA.
Unfortunately most of my friends are too busy playing DOTA,so meh.
Would love to try a LAN OFP game :)

UnReal Tournament '99. Just find someone to join your server, and you will never forget that.
Also, Diablo 1/2 are awesome when your just playing with friends, it's deeply satisfying when you beat the boss on HELL difficulty.

I was at a friend's house on Friday, and we set up a 1-on-1 LAN game of UT2004 with some mutator I found called Blast Arena. That was damn fun.

If there are around 4 people in LAN, I vote for Need for Speed III - Hot Pursuit. First, I'm not the one who really appreciates NFS 7 and above, second, four players in an NFS3 tournament is very entertaining - last summer we had a LAN Party and we played two tournaments. We were six, the better racers (my brother and I) went with our Ferrari 550 while the other, unskilled people went with Jaguar XJR-15 and Mercedes CLK (which are seriously better!), and nothing beats the feeling when those rookies knock you out :D

Well any game of the Descent series still rocks on a LAN, the only disadvantage is that it's frustrating if you've never ever played it before....
Duke3D: someone mentioned it before and yes - it's still so much fun to play with friends. It's damn fast. :woot:
And besides the classics here, CoD 1 is awesome when you play inside buildings and everyone is just armed with a pistol **** pure paranoia!!!
never managed to play Civ on the net... must be .. ehrr.... interresting.

Haegemonia. Not that well-known game, basicially it's space strategy from the creators of Reunion, made in around 2002-2003. I prefer the expansion pack when playing in LAN. Why is it good in LAN? Because of its unique gameplay, you have to see your opponent's face when you sneak in and colonize a planet in their home system and launch attacks from there :hihihi:, or when you infiltrate the enemy territory and do everything nasty with spies. :max:

Blood, some really fun weapons that you can use! Voodoo Doll anyone?
Road Rash is cool, but it can be hard to hit your friends, whether it be with a chain or with a club..Still great fun though! :)
I play loads of other games with my bro and stuff, but these are a couple that come to mind, DooM is great too!

Halo. Not because it's a great game, because it isn't. But simply because it's enough of a "lowest common denominator" game for you to easily get like 10 random people you know together for a game and they all already know how to play it.

GTA2, one of the best (and funiest) lan games ever.
Also good is OPEN ARENA its a Quake 3 clone and its freeware!
Perhaps u will find here some other ideas:

Agreed. This can be a LOT of fun a LAN, especially with all the custom vehicles available (just make sure the vehicles allowed are fair to all players involved). We'd often try to help each other avoid tickets by slamming into the cops (and/or each other) as they're trying to stop us. Plus, you can edit car files and change their speed/mass/etc... :mischief:
I also like TFC (with bots if the crowd is small) and Warcraft II BNE.
Oldies but goodies.
