Hi Guys,
what do you think of this one
http://www.thewitcher.com/
It might appeal to people complaining about story as at least from the reviews etc that I have read it is quite focused on the story and decissions that you make in the game will have some real relevance.
helps that it looks really nice also:)

i was looking forward to it like a year ago cause they said it d be based on the books and that Sapkowski agreed on the story. but now i totaly forgot about it, it took them ages to make it

I've readed an interview with Sapkowski in one of the polish game magazine. He gave the game makers free hand, so there might be some misunderstandings between the game and his prose.
And yes - the decissions, that you make in game will be very important. Many further quests will be depend on this decissions.

It looks okay, if a bit flashy, I think they might be trying to hide the gameplay with all those pointless trailers and gameplay videos released, which is really stupid because quite honestly I think the simplicity of it so far is pretty good idea, considering Hellgate London is going to be pretty good if the Beta says anything.
Also tell these fags to stop making flash sites, I never look at the damn things, if there's one thing Bethesda did right it was simply using Flash to make the layout of their sites easier to navigate, not a *dirty word* movie.

LOL, I know what you mean, I have a very restrictive firewall / add blocker set up and every time I go to one of these stupid flash sites I have to unblock everything to get it to display at all, if I wan't to look at a video I just go to gamespot which I have already set up.

the worst thing about those flash-es is that they have set quality to high and there is like 4x antialiasing. so with vector graphics+antialiasing it works well only on seriously fast computers. if there was at least an option for low quality (can be selected by DEFAULT in ANY flash movie, they just disable the option)

For example HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WR4g30RX0M) ;)
But it's early alpha, so there might be some changes in final version (interface for example...)

Gamestop (retail game store) was handing out free copies of a couple teaser chapters to the newest American version of one of the books - it wasn't a bad read. Fairly typical fantasy story, but pretty good writing.
The game looks interesting - I haven't made up my mind, but I'll keep an eye on it.

I should recieve my copy tomorrow. If I can sneak in a couple of hours, I'll let you know what I think of it :)

Excuse the double-post, but I'd like to put up a warning to those who plan on buying the game.
It suffers under an extremely oppressive copy protection that for some of the users (me included) refuses to allow them to run the game for no apparent reason. And no no-cd crack exists (yet) to bypass it.
You might want to make sure you can return the game before you buy it :)
Otherwise, the game has some excellent artwork (if I can believe the artbook :P) and is well supported by the developers with patches, free guides and possibly free additional content.

cracks exist! I've seen this game working (not at home ... not that good PC), and it wasn't a legal copy... Maybe it's a crack for polish edition only I do not know
Doubler
01-11-2007, 07:22 PM
That's likely to be a workaround that most people won't be able to do, and which requires a payed-for version of Daemon tools. I've seen those around.
Let me rephrase it: No simple crack exists :P
Edit: oh, and I forgot to say earlier that the game has absolutely excellent music, judging from it's soundtrack.

01-11-2007, 07:26 PM
i dont think that people with illegal versions of witcher will have a trial version of daemon tools :P
btw if you seriously are a saint and stuff, you can just use alcohol 30 days trial
Blood-Pigggy
01-11-2007, 07:46 PM
Um, maybe it does the same thing that C&C3 does and just refuses to run the game if it senses any virtual drives like Daemon Tools or Alcohol %120?
Yeah, it's lame, but if it that's the case, then the people who can't figure out why the game won't work are retarded.
EDIT: HAHA, I was right, looking on Wikipedia it says it in the article. You'll just have to uninstall those programs.
Doubler
01-11-2007, 10:23 PM
I wish it was that easy, but that's the odd thing: I don't have either installed. Never had Alcohol installed. Daemon tools long ago, but it, its drives and its registery keys are all gone. Still won't work. And believe me, I'm not the only one with the problem.
Irony is, possibly the only way for me to play my game is by using Daemon tools to create some kind of virtual IDE thingey or somesutch.

01-11-2007, 10:29 PM
Umm there are programs that will "camouflage" the virtual drives in Daemon Tools....
Blood-Pigggy
01-11-2007, 10:51 PM
Those programs are pieces of trash, they don't work with C&C3.

01-11-2007, 10:53 PM
just cause you cant run it doesnt mean its a trash :P
Blood-Pigggy
01-11-2007, 11:00 PM
I can run it and it doesn't work, when C&C3 patches itself (and you need to do it to play online) it will have measures against those programs.
So no dice.

what did you expect, indeed it has measures after it calls home o_O

wow, they seem to be pretty pissed.
but seriously, this is ridiculous. buddies around here got their pirated versions from the net days ago already and enjoy the game while the real customers dont even get a word from the developers and the game keeps telling that their version is pirated

I'll try to do some research on polish site of the developer (gram.pl) to help You.
EDIT:
I do not know if this problem was written in english anywhere so i'm translating:
1. Uninstall CloneCD, Alcohol, Daemon-Tools
2. Restart computer
3. uninstall STPD
To uninstall it download this:
http://www.duplexsecure.com/download/SPTDinst-v150-x86.exe
Run it and choose UNINSTALL (Do not install it again)
4. restart computer
5. Regedit.exe
6. Delete the registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\{E9F81423-211E-46B6-9AE0-38568BC5CF6F}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\32418F9EE1126 B64A90E8365B85CFCF6
7. In device manager delete these devices:
SCSI & RAID --> A347SCSI SCSI Controller
System devices --> Plug & Play BIOS Extension
8. regedit.exe again
9. Delete these keys now:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\a347scsi
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\a347bus
10. Go to C:\Windows\system32 and delete these files:
a347scsi.sys
a347bus.sys
11. restart computer
12. I hope it will work
These are from official CD Projekt website. I hope these are helpful, and will work. Here is a link also in my language:

From what I understand the copyright protection kicks in if it detects the PRESENCE of SCSI driver DLLs in the system. Gaaak.
It's like a second StarForce.
BTW, I strongly advise against trying the advice about setting the DVD drive to PIO mode. Most DVD recorders can be permamently damaged this way.
Doubler
02-11-2007, 12:21 PM
Apparently there's also a problem with Tages and SATA drives, which it detects as if it were SCSI.
With other words: those with SATA drives are screwed. The only fix would be to install an older drive.
You know, I think the copy protection companies are bigger criminals then the pirates, to be honest. They're extorting the entire industry, bunch of mobsters.

*chuckle*
Looks like they decided to screw over most of future buyers of their games. Many of the computers sold nowadays come with SATA drives as standard.

Well, from all I hear it actually IS the best RPG to come out for years. It's just a pity the publishers failed so horribly.
Maybe the issue will be fixed later. I hope.

well, i have tried going through first intro mission with chimera right now and i have to say that it was realy disappointing. i hope that it was first impression only and more rpg elements, side quests and better combats will fix it.
btw doubler if you are still having the trouble, just get any image program (everybody recommends daemon so you can try using that one) and make an "IDE" virtual drive in it. then just make an image of your game and mount it in it. be sure to take out your original cd out of the drive before cause otherwise the game will look there first
