The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications.

I must be missing something.

Read this (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1483&st=30#). It explains what the problem is and how to fix it. Most people have found it to work.

EDIT: Don't read my first post - scroll down to my second one.

Doesn't work for me. Seems weird, 'cause I've played it before and if I remember correctly, it even was on this very same computer.
It displays the standard "illegal operation" window at the main screen and ends.
I have Win 98SE, so the hints in the other conversation won't help.

mouse31e
04-12-2004, 09:20 AM
That does sound odd.

It should work fine on all versions of windows.

Aristharus
04-12-2004, 10:42 AM
It first displays a Win 3.11 type error with a white background. "An error has occured in your program." etc. If you press Ignore, nothing happens, and when you click on Close, after that comes the normal Windows Illegal Error thing. When you close that too, the whole program closes.
Maybe I'll try to download it again. I don't think it'll help, but it doesn't hurt to try.

[Edit: I was right, the re-download/-install had no effect.]

Hi.

We're going to try a different copy of the game. I know it works on XP, Win2000 and Win95 but I can't promise anything with Win98SE.

I don't know how soon it will be done - that's all down to Kosta now.

Hope it works better and enjoy the game!

Hi Sort of related problem.

i can run the game OK until i get to around 12 office lengths and 17 stories.
then i either get a total lockup (can't even bring up taskmanager) or try to save and get told that there are too many Simtower files open and i have to close some before i can save. sometimes i also get a message saying "diskfull or locked up".

hope someone can shed a little light on thiss one. nice one guys.

Is, per chance, your HD almost full?

Sim Tower, albeit being a simple game, takes a lot of processing power and memory to run. I remember on my old pentium one when my fan stopped working. The only game which could not run was Sim Tower, it freezed after 2 mins of playing because of the CPU heat. That's when I brought the computer for repair and noticed the fan was faulty.

Windows use a big chunk of your HD for "virtual" memory (you can change this in windows options, though I don't remember where). If your HD is full the game will crash when out of memory.

technoandy
15-12-2004, 04:34 AM
Cheers dude.

But my HD has 32Gb Free of 37Gb total space. pretty sure the fans still working too. left virtual mem settings as default and it seems to crash or lockup when i turned off Firewall/Virus guard software more than when i leave them on... this is a new one on me.

Sorry, I believe (or atleast I donīt know) that it canīt-
Itīll have to be deselected manually whenever starting the game/

You can't disable it permanently, you will just have to switch it off as soon as you load the game! :D

Sim Tower doesn't have a full screen mode so there's no way it will run in full screen. :D

Extract the contents of the .zip file to a directory of your choice!
Open the directory and just run setup!
Follow the instructions on screen and then just run the program from the window it opens for you!

If you have floors all the way down to the bottom there is still a slight space between the last floor and the bottom of the screen.

It shows the elevator goes to floor B9, you must place the Metro Station between floor 9 and the bottom of the screen (B10). Then the space will show the subway tunnel next to the station. :ok:

The bottom floor (B10) needed to be cleared of all items. Thank you for the help.

Small problem here if anyone could help me, I'm up to the 60th floor and if I try to build anything there it ssays that there is no Transport connected, even though I build the sky lobby every 15th floor and have elevators connect to there, and its not like I dont have any elevators I have 3 of them connected to it, and stairs going to the 3 floors closest to the skylobby and it still says No transportation connected hlp :help:

You need to start an elevator on the 45th floor to build beyond the 60th, just an annoying thing.

I can't get the setup to work! What shall i do? i have xp.

BUFFY

What does the error say? I have XP aswell and the setup works... you can change the install directory, write anything for the company name etc, and it should be fine.... share some details of the problem... you may just have a corrupted zip in which case just download it again. This is a Windows game so dont try anything in Dos.

However if the error is this:

"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

Then search for autoexec.nt. It's on your computer but the problem is that it's not in the system32 folder where it should be because something has moved it! Once you find it copy it back to system32 and your games should work fine. Make sure you get autoexec.nt and NOT autoexec.nt_. They are different files.

Autoexec.nt is the winXP version of autoexec.bat. The game is looking for it in system32 where it should be but it can't find it so it returns that error message which doesn't really make sense.

Thanks to Mouse31e for this explanation.

I have XP

What happens to me is I enter the name and company, enter the location where I want to install, hit the ok button to begin installing and the installer just locks up. In order to get out of it I have to go to Task Manager and end the program from there. The message I get after closing it says I ended a nonresponsive program called NTVDM.EXE.

"Disk is full or locked"

I'm sure that 21 floors aren't enough to fill my HD or locked (what ever it even means in this case).

Win xp
1.84GHz
767Mb ram
40Gt free space

Nice game but this problem is annoying.

Hi,

I just Sim Tower, and successfully installed it on to my computer. Then when i go to play it, it first of all says:

"An error has occured in your application.
if you choose ignore, you should save ur work in a new file.
if you choose close, you application will terminate"

then when u chose ignore , it says:

"Tower caused a General protection fault in module WAVMIX16.DLL at 0001:0054

Choose close. TOWER WILL CLOSE!"

The programe then terminates. Im currently on a Windows 2000 OS.

I tried to copy all the files needed in the system32 folder, and there is still no change. can any one please help me, it would be much appreciated!

Try to keep noisy and unappealing things as far away from condos as posible.
I like to make the condos on the floor above the noisy buildings at a very low rent and work my way up.

with adding games like this to Win 98 , you HAVE to make sure that you are in MS-DOS mode before installing it , you cannot be trying to install them in the DOS prompt box while running within windows , you have to restart in MS-DOS mode then take it from there , trust me , I have Windows ME , and I would have had the same prob as well , but my Windows ME I hacked into it to separate out the DOS 8 from the Windows ME , now it runs like Windows 3.1 (long story not going into the specs. Well essentially I started into DOS , and I managed to run the prog no probs. Peace.

The reviewer Mouse31e is too subjective in his review of simtower.

If he didn't like simcity 2000, then its not surprising that he gives a lukewarm review of simtower. How he can say that simtower is a game you cannot get hooked on, I don't understand.

If simtower is your type of game, then you will get HOOKED. Like I did.

Well, obviously a review can only reflect the reviewer's opinion. I can't see what's so surprising about that.

Just remember that Condos are your best friend!!!
You always need them and when selling in bulk they can provide many useful simolians to play with.
Also remember to keep the occupants happy at all times so that they will continue to buy the condos in bulk!!!

This is just a random guess, but try extracting the ZIP with the installation files to a folder, instead of installing directly from the ZIP, and don't delete it after you install and run the game.

I got the maxis simpack, and i played SimTower a lot. It's an incredibly addicting game (moreso than sim city) but my biggest problem in it was managing the elevators. No matter what I tried, they would always be huge queues for the elevators which got everyone stressed and upset and it drove down the quality of my operation. Does anyone have any elevator strategies that helped them?

And Kearnsy, I like offices more than condos. You can fit more in, and they pay every quarter as opposed to when someone moves in. Ofice blocks on one side of the tower, hotel space on the right, and you can really pile in the chinyen.

And Kearnsy, I like offices more than condos. You can fit more in, and they pay every quarter as opposed to when someone moves in. Ofice blocks on one side of the tower, hotel space on the right, and you can really pile in the chinyen.
If your queues are huge put in a few escalators or stairs. It helps a bit, Esspecially from a lobby or skylobby. Put more elvators in high traffic areas and moke Condo people walk a bit further!!

I try to segment the different building types by floors rather than side to side. This has better sound insulation and creates a more even flow of people in and out of the tower (less strain on elevators)

Oh, and I still think Condos are better! Jack up the sale price (then reduce the rent to keep them happy), they have less people, make less noise and sell easily.
So there! :bleh: :tomato:

You won't find it for download - and it is not for sale. That is how ESA wants to preserve the gaming history.

Well I figured out how to get around the readme error when installing the game. Make three folders on your C: drive named DISK1, DISK2 and DISK3. Put the files named "Simtower.E1_" in DISK2. "Simtower.E2_" goes in DISK3 and all the other files go into DISK1. After this just run the installer and it'll work just fine. You can delete all the folders when you're finished.

I've just borrowed Sim Tower from a friend of mine and it doesn't work. I've tried everything that was mentioned here, but the program is not starting up. I've even downloaded it elsewhere and it still doesn't work. I have yet to come across any error messages. As mentioned earlier, when I clicked setup.exe, it would only stay on for less than a second and doesn't install anything in the end. What should I do?

Start with Compatibility Modes. Right-click on the executable. [Properties]->[Compatibility]
Try Windows 95, 640x480, 256 Colors.
Then try VDMSound.
After that, DosBox.

Pretty clear. This game was never meant for XP in the first place. Try using Compatibility Modes to get around this problem, fraid there's nothing else I can suggest (two other solutions are A.Virtual Machine programs, but they are laaaaggy and B. getting an extra HDD to install Windows 9x on it, but then it would cost a sum to obtain both).

Don't all SIM games destroy the computer? After installing tons of SIM games, my brother had a computer that was going to catch fire through the circuitboard. The fire wouda gone like a maze destroying every circuit on the way. I'm trying to recreate the game to make it better with Game Maker 6.1.(http://www.gamemaker.nl/ (http://www.gamemaker.nl)).

Complete and utter bulls**t, dude.
I had TONS of Sim games on my old 486, and it did not experience any trouble for 10 years it was running (until I plugged in the power cables the wrong way round, that is...).
Also, circuitry does not catch fire.
More likely that your machine's CPU fan has suffered a failure, or your brother didn't want to admit that he damaged the computer when irresponsibly attempting to overclock it without proper precautions.

Has anyone addressed the "disk full or locked" problem? For me, it comes up when I try to save after playing for about 5 or so minutes.

It doesn't seem to have much to do with anything in the game, I could have an empty lot or a huge tower and it still takes about 5 minutes.

My specs are 800mhz, 256ram, 30gb hd with 16 free, win xp

This problem is ruining the game for me, any help would be MUCH appreciated.

"The Win16 Subsystem was unable to enter Protected Mode, DOSX.EXE must be in your AUTOEXEC.NT and present in your PATH."

DOSX.EXE and AUTOEXEC.NT are both in C:\WINNT\system32 folder and it's present in PATH. I'm using Windows 2000 Professional Editon (NT). There seems to be no compatibility mode present in Windows 2000. I messed with windows help file a little and it tells that win95 and later versions are 32 bit softwares and they are unable to run 16bit softwares. Ok, so I've tried everything in the last 11 pages, and none of it works for me. So far, it works up the when you start a new game, there, it runs for about 1 hour game time, and locks up, and displays one of those white "An error has occured......" messages with Close and Ignore. Ignore does squat, and close closes Sim Tower and displays the Illegal operation message.

Im Running Windows 98SE v4.10.2222 A on a 533mhz Celeron with 191mb of RAM.

After peeking around the Simtower folder I noticed a program in the folder named "Info.exe", when you open it, it seems to spit out a bunch of system info in a DOS console.

EMS/XMS are two ways in which DOS manages larger quantities of RAM... they don't have anything to do with Windows.

Personally, I'd rather bet that some background-running process doesn't like Simtower too much... try disabling every background program before running the game next time.

You best build your elevators assymetrical. The first two may go up to 15th floor. Then start at least one elevator every skylobby supported by express elevators.

I'd spare the first three or even four floors with elevator connection and leave them with stairs. Otherwise they'll flood your elevators for lunchtime. These guys can walk! >:)

Tenants won't use more than two elevator rides for going to their destinations. If you have an office at 70th floor and if it is only reachable with three elevator rides, they won't go there. Try going to 60th floor with an express elevator and then to 70th floor with a standard one. By the way they won't also use more than three stairs in a trip.

And then, here is my question;
I got the five star rating and 15000 population. Built the cathedral at the very top of 100th floor but I still can't get the tower rating :wallbash: Read about the wedding thingy but it doesn't seem to happen. So, what next???

Havent played this game in years, but if i recall correctly its all about having a stable 15000 population, so too many hotel rooms will tend to ruin this as it causes massive fluctuations. Then its just a matter of making sure the quality of living is good everywhere and sit and wait. Eventually a wedding just "happens".

The game is ESA-protected and Abandonia is not allowed to host it.

Youre going to have to look from somewhere else, pal.

Connection problems caused by a DDOS attack on our hosting provider. <_<
There is nothing we can do, solving the issues is entirely up to the provider.
It should be solved in a few days.

Alright, potentially stupid question.

What do the express settings for the elevators actually do? I can't tell much of a difference between any of the settings thus far.

.....I find it worth mentioning that I'm not actually playing the original simtower (yet), but the GBA version, which appears to be a condensed version. (For example, the subway runs at about 6 below ground, and the chapel goes on the 60th floor if I recall correctly.) Shouldn't be too much of a difference of game mechanics, I'd think.

Great, downloaded the game, got a problem. Won't install.

Downloaded it again from another site. Same problem.

And yes, I read back through the earlier posts. While my problem was briefly mentioned, the question went unresolved.

My problem is (regardless of compatibility setting I've set it to) when I run the installer I get an error message entitled "Application: DSHELL" that says "The Win 16 Subsystem has insufficent resources to continue running."

What the hell?

Also, after getting this error (which seems to randomly pop up during the installation process, assuming it doesn't hit right off the bat) it won't let me try running setup again, as I get an error stating that another setup is running. I have to ctrl-alt-del and get rid of a process entitled "ntvdm.exe" just to try again.

In before someone suggests dosbox for a windows program again. (which won't help, as I've tried, and it says it's a windows program.)

Express to top means that at the time, as soon as somebody gets in the elevator, it immediately goes to the top of the shaft. I found this useful with a business tower, putting fast food restaurants in floor B1. With express to bottom at lunchtime, everybody instantly went to the restaurants, and the cars dropped them off there then went up for more people.

Those little fast food joints can rack up 450-500 visitors for a tower with many business offices, and they help the offices' satisfaction rating, so might as well put a few.

People from hotel rooms go to normal (more expensive) restaurants like mad as well.

When lines increase in length quickly, it's good to put a 30 second wait (haven't experimented with 60 sec) on the elevator cars. That doesn't necessarily mean long lines but rather lines that FORM quickly. Like, if there are 5 people waiting, the car picks them up, then just as it leaves, 20 people form a line, you want a wait time.

Fastest way to win sim tower

beginning:
make short lobby plus 2 floors above and below, only long enough to build 3 fast food joints length on each floor for a total of 12 ff restraunts. then wait for about 10 mins to get your second star. Destroy the fast food joints above the lobby but keep the ones below.

2 stars:
Build a hotel from floor 1 through floor 13 all the way across. Build the hotel service units below ground on one or two floors below B4 with a service elevator up. ONLY one or two suites just to get the vip recomendation. Stick with single units only. Get it running without problems then let er sit about 2 hours and the money will pile up. From then on always pay the bombers and fire fighters. never build more than 2 security, no condos, no offices. Hotels use elevators at night- fast food during the day (no conflicts). This should get you to about 4 stars.

4 stars
Build up. put fast food and restraunts 4 floors above and below sky lobbies and use escalators there. This increases population dramatically.

learn to manage elevators for this scenario.

You should have no problem with the rest

You should build your elevators asymmetrically. Start a new elevator in every skylobby.

The SimTower-help provides information about the behavior of the SIMs within the tower and towards the elevators. It's always been a big help to me.

They never switch elevators more than two times or so. And you have to plan your transport in that way.
I always felt that it was a bit annoying that you couldn't arrange it in a logical way that has a system, but that you had to keep with the SIM behavior.
But I think that's realistic - in a way... :D

Hope that helps. :ok:

im a bit confused you say that the sims don't change elevators more than twice but elevators onl go 30 floors so to just get to sixty they have to switch twice and to go further than 60 they have to switch elevators 3x at least. im so confused....

The SIMs are morons. You have to make sure that every skylobby a standard elevator starts.
The SIMs use the express elevator as little as they can and then switch to the normal ones.
Logically they could go to floor 48 by using express to 45 and then go three floors by normal. But they go to 30 by express and then use the normal elevator to 48.
Did you get my point? ^_^

Depending on how broad your tower is, one housekeeping every two or three floors will do when you connect them with a service elevator.

i think its with old version of windows installer
try unpacking this installed version. the game itself is installed in C:\Simtower and there are some files which go to windows and windows\system

the direcotires with files in the archive are made exactly in the same way as they are supposed to be put on a hdd, begining with "c" drive

pick any archiver you like
zipped (http://www.4shared.com/file/20342387/9e39381f/c_online.html) 2.2 mb
rared (http://www.4shared.com/file/20342418/da0b8842/c_online.html) 1.7 mb

The fact is that you didn't install any registry files when you put it on your computer (so no entry on the install/uninstall), you just extracted it from a zip.

Don't worry, this is a good thing, just delete the folder the game is in. Poof gone, no traces remain.

Fully seconded, works as a charm.
Or VPC-W3.x.

Also to consider, and usually forgotten, (by me also), if you have already dosbox 0.72 W3.x runs fine on dosbox, and Simtower is afterall a W3.x game.
It's pretty easy to install W3.x in dosbox, maybe easier than VPC if you never been on real MSDos.

I've recently reinstalled this (ok, about 20 minutes ago! :-) ). Installation worked like a champ, the game starts up fine, runs extremely fast, but runs fine.

However one wee bit of a problem exists which I have not seen in these umpteen pages. If I click on any menu item (File, Options, Help, etc), it immediately closes. No application errors, no Dr Watson crash logs. It just appears to exit. Anyone else experience that? If so, anyone have a fix for it? I'd rather not use dosbox/win3.1 if I can avoid it, but will if it's the only resolution. I've tried every app compatibility OS to no avail.

But it's a very common problem and you have to go through the game manual to read how the Sims behave towards the elevators.
E.g.: They switch from express- into standard-elevator as soon as possible instead of going with the express-elevator as far as they can.

the same idea came to me: i'm using Virtualisation Software to test different stuff on other OS's. basically you can run a windows in a "Window".

Just check out:http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

it's very easy to setup (you can do it even with just clicking "Next" like a fool ^^). Insert your old windows 98 or so in your cdrom, in the settings of your created virtual Harddrive (which is only 1 big file on your real HDD), click on "cdrom/dvdrom" and mount your Hostdrive, start the virtual machine and have fun :) Every half-modern PC has no problems handling this machines, as they take practically no CPU Power anymore :)

i'm doing the same with FreeDOS now.

back to topic:

i noticed years ago, when installing Simtower on a Win98, that if i wanted to open a program "with another program", in the list where i could chose "open with: notepad, word, blablabla," there was also the simtower.exe. So i could open any program with the "open with:" option and chose the tower.exe....it was kinda annoying to me :-/
At that time i didn't know how to remove it from the list. I know that it's just an entry in the registry now..

Is it possible to fix that somehow? That happens when you start building hotel rooms.
Try to build four floors of hotel rooms with two housekeepings.
Connect these four floors with a service elevator.
The more housekeeping and the more rooms you have the better they work. Strangely.

:OK:

Oskatat
30-09-2009, 11:33 AM
to expand on that: every housekeeping building supplies 1 housekeeper. They cant move off that floor without a service elevator. install a service elevator and housekeepers that are done early will help those that have a difficult job. However, since you have a limited number of elevator engines, consider just making more housekeepers. By this time, the money shouldnt matter anyway

Can someone help me? I can't place anything. I'm running Win XP SP3 in compatibility mode (win 95), and it installed and runs fine, but I can't place a lobby so I can't even get any offices or anything.

*EDIT* Never mind, got it to work.
