Idea that's in my head for days. Every site with old games has old games and are saying in reviews how was it and so. So, I tought that we could provide some authentic texts from past time. They doesn't necessary have to be old reviews for games, but others stuff such as writings of various journalists in various magazines about games, about market at that time, companies, interviews with game programmers, situation and ideas with current hits and so on.

I remember back in 1994, some psyhologists became interested in video-games, because more and more kids spent more and more time playing. So, two high-school boys wrote big and real serious text talking about both good and bad sides of playing.

Now, this is just an example. If somebody has some old magazines with interesting text, wants to translate it and send it to adimnistrators, there will probably be somebody who will find it interesting. There will be name of magazine in which text was published, year when it was published and offcourse name of the author (we don't want to be accused for steeling).

I think this is not bad idea because we will have texts from different magazines from different countries. We will have various themes and discussions. Personally, I would love to read such stuff. So, there might be more people interested in this work (besides me), so that new stuff in extras can grow slowly.

Start with your oppinions....

Well, I have quite some texts of old games from Gamebyte Magazine, or some others which names I don't recall now. Also it's easy to find things on the net too...
I personally think this idea is not that bad, for those who would like to see such texts it would be an interesting extra addition on the site. ;)

Yeah, and as far as I know, it would be original. I don't recall such stuff on others sites.

Today I was in my school's archive, and there I read PC Magazine from 1994 (I think)!!!! :Brain:
Anyways, it's great idea! :ok:
The problem is that I don't have any interviews, texts, etc.
And we already discussed about makeing an interview with some game producers (I don't remember the conclusion of that discussion)!

It would be a good thing if some admin say something. Maybe they just don't have time for this or they doub there will be enough stuff to work with.

so???

I'm COMPLETELY for the idea, I love it. However, who would actually do this? It would require a tremendous amount of time....

I have a few old games magazines from 1994 but there is no way I'm going to type over all those arrticles. There are a few interresting articles (like walkthroughs) in there but it would take too long for what it is worth.

The thing I would love to see is Pictures of articles written about Abondonia.

I have heard rumours that these exist out there, I want to see them and place them on the site. :D

I have a heap of computor magazines dating from about twelve years ago, which have game reviews and articles. I'm a pretty fast typist, so I'd be willing to type up some of the more interesting ones and send them in.

Perhaps those with scanners could send in a jpg of the articles/reviews.

I've been looking through gazillions of old computer magazines, but I can't find any dated earlier than 1996. That's the bad news. The good news is these magazines have some pretty interesting things, including an interview with Terry Pratchett who wrote the Discworld games. There are some strategy guides for Quake, Diablo, C&C, Warcraft 2, etc There's an article about Daggerfall and reviews of Neverhood, Hind, Scorched Planet, The Pandora Directive, Road Rash, Lighthouse, Elk Moon, The Master of Dimensions, Nework Q RAC Rally, Fable, Crusader: No Regret, Metal Rage, Close Combat, Reissues, and there's an article revealing some Quake secrets. And much, much more, of course, like cheat codes and...

Guess there are several of us who are willing. Other can just scan few pages.

This section also can grow sowly. No need to rush right?

This is idea. It can be like archive page, with years and months below. Beside a month there can be number that shows how many texts we have that date from that time. I also think that if we have nothing from certain year of month, it shouldn't be on site.

example:

1994

November(4)

Then clicking on November will give you meny with texts. There you see their names (headlines), authors and names of magazine in wich it was published.

Just an idea, maybe someone has better.

Tom Henrik
06-12-2004, 01:33 PM
Sounds good, but it should also have a search button.

Let's say you want to figure out all that is written about Quake. It would be hell and back to have to browse through the entire archive.

A combination of the two would be great. With the archive as the main "engine".

The Niles
06-12-2004, 02:09 PM
btw if we are going to do this we need the permission of the magazines to do this.

Tom Henrik
06-12-2004, 02:14 PM
Ah... good point.

I was so ecstatic, that I forgot about that. :xmas:

Well, how hard could it be?

The Niles
06-12-2004, 03:14 PM
I don't think it will be that hard but we should contact them if only to avoid a problem later on.

Tom Henrik
06-12-2004, 03:18 PM
I totally agree.

marko river
06-12-2004, 04:48 PM
I guess we should do that.

Still it's not likely that they will make problems, since we will use old stuff which are already forgoton or can be found on net for free. Also, we will surley mention the name of the magazine, right?

Main idea was to drag people from whole world to do this, so we can see same themes in different countries. Hope this will happen :w00t:

I have almost every PC Gamer mag going back to 1994

Pictures of my magazines! (http://muc-central.com/gallery/books)

I also have some old PC Games:

My PC Games (http://muc-central.com/gallery/computergames)

I'm not sure, but I have Outcast which may be considered Abandonware. I would love to contribute whatever I can.

Also... I love this site! I love the fact that this site focuses on the passion people have for abdonware. Most sites I have found are ugly sites with links to link that probably won't work. Keep up the good work! You're doing a great job of distracting me from my final exams :-P.

I'm in total awe of your organisational skills. :w00t: Glad you're enjoying the site.

Well, you've read where Kosta (site owner) said that he'd love to have articles about old games, so anything you'd like to contribute would be appreciated by him and us. I'm not Admin so I don't have any say on this, but I think anyone who contributed some of these articles, and even a game as you suggested, might have a faster trip to VIP status.

Thanks wendymaree! My girlfriend swears that I have some form of OCD. When exams start, I usually starting cleaning my entire place. My favorite slogan is "If it's not in alphabetical/categorical/chronological order, then it needs to be!" ;)

I would love to contribute, but my writing skills are lacking. I'll see what I can do though. Not sure what this VIP thing is, but I'm not worried about trying to attain that status. I just want to give something back to the community.

Your writing skills look pretty fine to me. :ok: However if you'd just like to upload games/a game, there's no need to review as well. Tom Henrik is the one to contact about what games to upload and where to upload, btw.

Kosta, Tom and others...... WHEN can we expect this new section to be build?

I can't send anythimg in next 10 days (exam, what can I say) but I surley will. Well, if other people want to contribute, they need to know how. I will be glad to volunteer in order to check new texts and to check with the magazines. I guess wendymaree won't mind either.

To Everyone who has older magazines : Why should you type the material when you can just SCAN it.It`s faster, easy and better, cause the other will have the opportunity to see the original article. With photographs and everything.
For those who are busy with studying it won`t take too much time, but only a couple of minutes depending on the pages.I`m not pushing anyone!Think about that.

Thanks wendymaree! Like marko_river I am in the middle of my exams so nothing is much is going to happen until I am done. Then I am going away for Christmas (yay -30C). I've always wanted to backup all my games anyways so this will be given me two reasons to do it!

I don't have a scanner so I can't scan my magazines :(. Also, I believe you won't get good scan results unless you slice off the bindings. That's the last thing I want to do to my collection!

Yavor
07-12-2004, 07:49 PM
Wow,Mucman..first of all any good internet club or bookstore has scanner.Or you can ask some friend. And for few funny cents you can scan the bible :D .Second,if you want good scan of a book or magazine you can bend the front cover to the back cover and than scan it as you press the magazine with the scanner`s hood.If the magazine or book is too big.It won`t make any damage to the object in the scanner.Everything problem has a solution. :ok: Simple.Isn`t it.
Again - I just want to tell how easy it is.Not pushing you, cause I really like the whole idea.

Thanks Yavor... I just remembered my brother has a scanner! I'll see what kind of scans I can do when I get the chance. I guess I should also contact all the magazine publishers for permission too, eh? I have all PC Accelerator, and Incite magazines which are now out of print. I wonder if these are considered the abandonware of magazines?

The two Australian magazines I've contacted to get permission were: Australian Personal Computer and PC Powerplay.

I tried to phone PC Powerplay - which has the most game related articles, but according to the directory operator there is no longer a company with this name registered. PC Powerplay has a web presence - a forum only - with an email address for those wanting to subscribe. I emailed this addie but still waiting for a response. This company could be defunct. The only magazines I have of theirs are now 7 - 8 years old.

Australian Personal Computer seems to be still active with a website and current email address. Just waiting to hear back from them. If I don't hear by tomorrow, I'll phone them. Both these companies are unfortunately located about a thousand miles from where I live in another State. I've got lots of other Aussie magazines, but these two have the oldest editions - 1996. Also have some British computer magazines from 1996, but they might be hard to track down by email.

If a company has gone out of biz, what is the situation then?

Unlimited VIP access. Wendy is lucky. I'd contribute some mags myself, but I don't have any more than 1 year old. But I could scan the web and look for some articles and reviews, and rewrite them. Personally, I think it's an awesome idea. :ok:

Wa-hoo!

Just got a reply from the editor of Australian Personal Computer about using articles from old editions of the magazine:

<<<Wendy, that's fine, but on the condition that you email me when it's done. I always check to see how the brand is represented.

best regards

I'll start typing up an article tonight :)

Sorry again 'cause you can't count me in till the 20th december.

It's about time for the adimns to make new section.

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot. If someone has some articles or want to type them, I guess we must check that. If they don't wanna, I will be glad. Do I need permission from our owner to do so? Maybe I shoul leave my mail adress so people can send articles, after which I need to contact magazines.

Don't mean to be arrogant, anyone can do that, so can I. Or maybe more of us should leave e-mail and be in charge of this new section?????????

yu-hu admins, your move baby :max:
