I'm really curious why do people download games.
I myself never read a longer review - even if I buy a game in a store I don't read what it's about. I go by my gut feeling and decide to buy it or not (even if I throw away my money).
What about you?

Well, I know usually the games that I search(ed), but it's still interesting to read the review and see what others think of it.

Well its either something I've been looking for or the screenshots/concept catches my attention and I decide to read the review.

Usually I fall for the screenshots.
But sometimes It's a game I've played before that I really want to play again...
with me its a mixture of things for me. like if i have played the previous game/next game in a series, i will want to try the others in a series. sometimes, screenshots sway me, sometimes reviews, it just depends on a lot

A combinaison of all of the above, with those in priority:
Screenshots. I have a huge experience in games, especially in old games. When I look at screenshots I have a very precise skill (around 90%) to know what the game genre is and what the game is about. Sometime I am wrong but it is rare. When I see which genre it is, I decide if I want to play it or not. For instance I will never play an Adventure game.
Review. The review is a great source of information on the game. It also helps kill the 10% missing in the skill mentionned above.
Looking for the game. If I was looking for a game from a long time I will download it ASAP. However it is not the case right now for any game I know (which are abadonware. However there is some games I would want to download right now which were abadonware before and are not anymore).
Someone suggested me to. If a relative or a good friend told me such and such games are good or a gem and that I never tried it, I may go and download it to try. Most of the time it is not true however, since I already played a big majority of the great old games around.

I didn't vote, cuz my answer is mixture of:
1. I was looking for this very game and found it.
2. Somebody suggested the game to me.
3. I liked the screenshots.
4. I read the review and decided to try the game.
The most games I downloaded and played are because I was looking for that game. I don't read many reviews, cuz I just don't feel like I should.
I think that is not just reading a review,or just seeing the screenshots,or even seeing the rating(u forgot this one). Its a combination of them all.The games u allready know and like to play or to own its another category  .You will download them anyway(u dont need to see or read something...) :ok:

To me screenshots are the main thing I look for. When playing a game you're constantly looking at the graphics and if you don't like the graphics, then you can't play it. I read the review but not for any opinion on the game but just to find out basic points about the story, I love stories with many twists and turns and unexpected events. I never take notice of the ratings, games may be good and fun in other people eyes but that does not necessarily mean I will think the same. But if I am looking for a book to buy or read I will always take notice of people comments and opinion on the book, mainly because it is not only the story that is important but the way the story is told and the only way I know of finding out anything about writing style is by reading other people opinions.

Its easy to know what game I'll download: if it's an adventure/puzzle game and also fantasy, I'll give it a go. That doesn't mean I'll like it, but usually I do. I don't enjoy games with violence, strategy, sports, piloting, sims. Not much left except adventure. :D

I often download games because I played them years ago and want to play them again but most of my downloads are due to good reviews.
I like reviews that actually tell me the good and bad points of a game. I don't want a review that tells me this is the best game I'll ever play but neglects to mention that it runs way too fast on modern computers. I might still download the game but I prefer to be in possession of all the facts.
Those of you who are writing all the excellent reviews that go on this site, keep it up! :ok: :ok: :ok: :ok: :ok:

My choosing to download a game is heavily based on two points: Screenshots, and the review.
I only truly trust the review if it is of good quality. The reviews on this site are great, and true to the games they represent.

The most important thing for me when deciding whether to dl a game or not are the screenshots! This is the only thing that counts.Of course if it's a game that i was looking for, i will dl it immediately.
I don't trust reviews, because they only reflect the editor's choice. And besides by looking at the graphics you can really tell if it's a good game or not.You can also find out many things about it's gameplay, and whether or not it has that special "DOS game" feeling :D

When you can trust reviewers we got a problem..
It's more based on the feeling of an editor and he should explain the type of gameplay...so you can see if you like it or not...and not only his judgement

I go by both the looks, type of gameplay, and rating its gotten. That goes for both games and hardware. I don't buy anything wihtout first checking the reviews and ratings

For me, its a combination of things. If I've been looking for it or remember playing it when I was younger, then I'll wan't to download it straight away. If it's a game I haven't seen before, then I'll trust the reviewer and the screenshots. When it comes down to it, these games don't take long to download, so if you don't like it then you haven't wasted much time. If you're not sure, then why not suck it and see? :)

Me too - for these old games screenies play a very small part for me, it's more about the review. If the review makes me laugh that's always a bonus, and it has to have a balanced appraisal of positive and negative points - that's why I like the things on AR because they force reviewers to think about them.
TBH I haven't downloaded anything from here for a while though - nothing's really taken my fancy. sometimes things do when I'm editing the reviews for grammar though.

screenshots are the biggest seller by far , esp if it's games you never played before

I look at the genre first..I am not really an action game person :) then I look at the screenshots and read the review and unless it both looks really awful and sounds really awful I am usually willing to give it a try (though honestly I try most of anything once if I can) :)

If I download a game, it's because of a one or more of the given reasons, and perhaps one or two more.
If I've never seen the game before, the review and screenshots are very important to me, as important as when I'm glancing over new games in games' magazines.
If I know the game from earlier days, I may download it for nostalgia's sake.
