A Few Bumps In The Road....

Hello everyone. Considering an outage of two days can be considered borderline catastrophic, I decided I had the responsibility to apologize. However, the damage has been done so there is no need to over analyse whose fault it was and what went wrong. It was hosting issues, as usual.

However, there is a brighter side to this post as well, so I will consider this incident a last bump in the road before some cool new things happen. Firstly, by the end of the week the page should reside on new servers. There has been talks about this happening for a while now, but this time its for real. I will be working on it and supervising it personally. The page will be transferred to a cluster of 5 load balanced servers and the increase in speed should be noticeable immediately. The work on this will start tomorrow and will take several days I presume.

Once that is done, there's more exciting things ahead. The page has been the way it is for a while now and it needs a kick in the behind. We require new features, a fresh design and so on. Thankfully, this is something that has been worked on relatively intensively as well for the past 6 months or so. Starting next week I will be working for nearly two months exclusively on this. Entire website will be transfered to Drupal framework and several dozen modules will be custom made for this purpose. Many cool things will be implemented such as a point system for contributions, game browser, tagging, profiles, new RSS feeds, company profiles, a revamped mailing list, better localization options etc etc etc. The list goes on :) I'm hoping it will all be ready by the end of the summer. So, bear with the site in its current state for a little more while and hopefully faster and more exciting times are just around the corner! I will be making posts about the progress made so far here, so be on a lookout for that!

Ah, thanks for the notice! I'll fix that in a second, shouldn't take long!
Also, I've started developing the drupal module for news... there is around 15 modules that need to be developed. Some will take a day, some will take a week, but I'll make posts once bigger ones are completed, and an estimate of how long it will take in general :)

i would like to have bigger photos in profile, or at least 'clickable' miniatures, so it would link you to a bigger one.
edit: since the server move i cant acces 'change my photo' anymore at all o_O

I think it's a good idea that _r.u.s.s. expressed. It doesn't necessarily have to be allowed to upload larger photos here on the server, but it would be great if members could have the dimensions of the linked from elsewhere pictures of, let's say, 125x125.
It wouldn't also hurt to be able to have larger photos visible if uploaded somewhere else, like 400x400 or similar.

That will all be handled through the unified profile in the new version. It will have more powerful photo manipulation. If a need arises, we can allow each member to have a little gallery as well, but that's really optional. I don't want to introduce too many features that wouldn't normally be used.

Hmm, there seems to be an issue with utf8 encoding, yes. I will look into it tomorrow. Its stored fine in the database, its just that apache sends a wrong default character encoding set

You're right... 32 manuals didn't synchronize. Odd, I've syncd the two folders again, should be ok now :)

by the way... will you also fix those annoyng " ' quotes and and ;9 wierd symbol errors in shoutbox? everything looks fine in archive again, but if you look straight in to shoutbox on the forum page, it looks deformed

edit: try typing 13 letters in quotes in the shoutbox and you will see
example "1234567890123"

The new design will be less graphic extensive and more reliant on css and plain text. Hopefully it will save as a lot of bandwidth which we can use instead for offering content :).

Aside from that, a lot of extra content will be included, maybe not at first, but there will be various sections which offer content aside from games. Think about a linkdump where we'll point out interesting reads on other sites. So even if you're not in the mood to chat on the forum, or download a game, you can have your game-related fun ;)

since new abandonia design is still being worked on and gonna be there soon, maybe we could add 'external links' like on wikipedia on the games review sites. like, site with fan maps or communities?

for example descent could have this (http://www.prepare4descent.net) in external link. or this utility (http://games.softpedia.com/get/Mods-Addons/D2X-XL.shtml) to run the game easily on xp. orr patches for re-volt (http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/sportplanet/rva/revoltpatch1207.zip) or community made tracks (http://revolt.speedweek.net/main/news.php) (there are LOADS btw). doomsday (http://www.doomsdayhq.com/) for id software old school fps, etc etc.

the pages on 'discuss this game' still grow and searching for useful links would still get more and more difficult so i think external links would be handy

i didnt mean that regular users could acces them. we watch over the forums so i guess we would see an important link to add. or users could send a 'request' for important link and it would pop up only after a mod checks it
