View Full Version : The Horror Quiz
The Fifth Horseman
06-02-2007, 12:54 PM
The person who answers the last question correctly asks the next one or nominates the person to do that.
If a new question is not asked within 24 of answering the last one, everyone is free to post the next (after which the normal rules apply again).
If the last question is not answered correctly within 48 hours, it is considered discarded and everyone is free to post the next (after which the normal rules apply again)
Please note that this is a themed quiz: the questions should concern horror genre.
Actual media is not important: it can be something from a book, a movie, comic or a game, but it _must_ be horror or horror-related.
You are free to use questions with open answer, with a choice between one of several answers or limited to answering whether the statement is true or false.
Please post a number next to your question, so we can keep track of how many have been asked.
So, to kick-start the whole thing, let's begin with something... easy?
1.One of fictional grimoires frequently appearing in the genre was originally titled Kitab Al-Azif. It is however known better under a different name.
What name is that?
And yes, it is an easy one. :whistling:
The Fifth Horseman
06-02-2007, 03:46 PM
Correct. ^_^
Your turn.
2.In Islamic mythology they are fiery spirits, one of which was Iblis. From the Arabic junna, "angry, possessed." "They are creatures who lived on earth before man; they were made up of 'smokeless fire' whereas men were made from earth"
What's the name of these demons?
Am I missing something? 'Cause I don't understand if you are nominating Tulac for answering your question or what. Shouldn't we nominate only for posting questions, not answers?
Anyway, aren't those Efreets?
You're right...everybody can answer to this question...
Sorry Tito...Efreets is not correct! :whistling:
The Spider Mastermind

Djinns?
..too easy for The Spider MasterMind! (Oh..I'm Aracnophobic..I hate spiders!)
Correct! It's your turn. ^_^

Yipee... my own horror knowledge isn't great, so this'll be a soft enough one.
In Irish/Celtic mythology, what manifests itself as a woman coming to someone in their dreams and screaming loudly to signify the death of a relative?
Tulac
06-02-2007, 09:11 PM
Even I know that (without using google).
It's Banshee.
The Spider Mastermind
07-02-2007, 12:30 PM
Yeah.
Ask a question or nominate someone else, then.

OK I'll take the task.
Which visual horror is carried around usually by almost everybody in a pocket, at least outside?
I'll take the turn, as nobody seems to know the answer to the last question (although I hope you enlighten us, Strachwitz, as I'm dying of curiosity).
5. In which film does the sentence "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" appear?
I know this ain't difficult, but it is a way to revive the thread.
C'mon people, it is a quite easy question! Donīt let this little thread die!

OK. Can anyone name at least 5 computer games with direct references to characters, places or things from the writings of H.P. Lovecraft?
Lulu_Jane
18-02-2007, 05:54 AM
Does Darkseed and it's sequal count as two or one? ;)
Let's see:
Shadow of the Comet
Prisoner of the Ice
Call of Chtulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Alone in the Dark I
Darkseed
The first three are quite clear (licensed by Chaosium and all that stuff), the other two used some concepts from Lovecrafts works.

Not two that I had in mind. I know Darkseed featured some of HR Giger's works. What were the Lovecraft references?
Mmmm, now that you say it, I'm not sure if there are direct references to Lovecraft in Darkseed. Maybe it is more a matter of inspiration. You know, there this alien race called "The Ancients" trying to conquer the earth and so...
I guess I'll have to look for another game to complete the answer.

Yes, I know. And also, there are plenty of games where books called Necronomicon appear. It is just that I can't remember them right now. :tai:
Edit: Wouldn't Day of the Tencatle fit the conditions? You know... a tentacle... trying to enslave mankind... Everybody knows Lovecraft had a strange fixation with tentacles!!!

Right. Lovecraft wrote about the Deep Ones as amphibious ocean-living creatures that have a thing for mating with humans. XCOM also depicted them as frog like creatures. I have never played Terror From The Deep. Were they half human?

Now I've also remembered that you fighted Shub-Niggurath at the end of the first Quake, along with some kind of final boss at the end of the first chapter that could also be taken from Lovecraft's works.
Lets see:

a. Clive Barker
b. Clive Barker's Undying (one of my favourite games)
c. I think it was Jeremiah the guy that summoned Patrick for help.

Okay this topic is certainly interesting, so i've got a phunky one...
Which non-existent being is generally referred to "the floating light/the floating fire", mainly hangs around in swamps or other dark and damp places and is known to "guide" a lot?
hints:
- can be found in many games, mainly rpg's
- generally blue, but other colors will do nice...

Chinese mythology. A deity or having to do with the immortals?
Hadiel
05-03-2007, 03:09 PM
Well, it seems i can't find the exact name from the history / mythology books so i'll count Will 'o' Wisp as A correct answer.
The thingey i meant was a light (fire like) Floating with a lot of other lights surrounding it. Much like Bishamons ghost flames in Vampire savior. I just know that there is another name for it but i just couldn't find it. (teh shame's on me)
Anyway Lulu Jane was right, so have a go! :ok:

This one should be easy, so I'll try to put it in a way that you'll be too confused to answer correctly.
It is a creature with quite a resemblance with a ****, and the best way to kill it is using a mirror. What Fray Benito Feijoo said of this evil being is that it can "exhaust the fields, wither the woods, break the stones and scare away every other animals".

Hadiel
10-03-2007, 05:33 PM
There's 6 in all that have the ability to turn things and people to stone.
- Cockatrice
- Gorgon
- Medusa
- Basilisk
- Chimera
- Carmasari (although not accepted by greek mythology.)
There suposedly are a lot more but they are all completely made up. (EG. no references at all) plus i can't remember any of the names.
Please note that anything beyond cockatrice doesn't resemble a chicken or parts of it in any way. Basically i just added them to make a reference in case your interested.
_r.u.s.s.
10-03-2007, 06:03 PM
Well, there were more interpretations of basilisks. i bet you remember one like from harry potter, or in kings quest there was also one "lizard-like". but there are more kinds of basilisks. also "rooster-like" check wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilisk

Your turn.
:brain: You know, the weidest thinkings come to my mind when I'm in the gymnasium, it is such a boring activity that little funny creatures such as the ones in Lovecraft'w writings start populating my mind.
Next one:
14. In 1964 a Japanese director made a film about ghost stories, that is considered an absolute masterpiece in the genre. What is the name of that director, film and every one of the stories that compose it?
Okay, so nobody seems to know about this film. I'm gonna give the answer, in case someone is interested, and pass the turn to whoever wants the task.
Film: Kwaidan
Director: Masaki Kobayashi
Stories: "The Black Hair"
"The Woman of the Snow"
"Hoichi the Earless"
"In a Cup of Tea"
If you are curious about this film, know that it has one of the best photograpies I've ever seen on a movie (some shots even resemble impresionist paintings), but it has quite a slow pace.

Wow, I'd love to check that out Tito, it sounds really cool.
By the way, I just watched Pan's Labrinth this morning (I'm having a day of sick today *cough* *cough*) and it is incredible. The imagery is haunting, and it has the balance between the "fantasy" elements and the "real" world of the Spanish facists is just right. It's a beautiful movie, I think that you'd enjoy it Tito...
Also, I have a horror question if no-one else is asking - What does the female Thai "vampire" look like?
Mmmm, I'll search my "World of Darkness" books for something about that Thai vampire. There was one about asian vampires. Maybe I'll even find some inspiration for the March art contest!
:offtopic: About "Pan's Labrinth", I'm eager to watch it. Actually, I worked for a year in a Spanish TV channel (Tele 5), that helped a lot with the production of that film. I hoped that they would give us that film as a present for Cristhmas (they usually do that), but in vain, it seems it was too recent. Now I'll have to buy it or "borrow" it from my cousin.
Mighty Midget
22-03-2007, 07:32 PM
Seems this game is more zombie than the Living Dead themselves. One try from me to keep this monster walking:
In a 50's horror movie where a mad professor, hidden in the "Muerto Desert", injects spider genes into women, one lady stands forth as a gem, trying to seduce her victims with a dance so jawdroppingly ridiculous it's really disturbing to watch. What was her character name?
Lulu_Jane
23-03-2007, 12:08 PM
I've always been a fan of zombies :)
Welcome back Mighty Midget!
Okey dokey, a thai vampire (which only comes in female form) is basically a disembodies head with guts and tentacles hanging from her neck. She eats new born babies, and handsome men. "Vampire" is the closest equivalent I could figure - In thai she is called Pii Krasue, and she's scary as hell!
Now it's up to someone else, I've run out of gore...
Hadiel
23-03-2007, 03:01 PM
dunno about thai vampires, but the asian vampires (according to the book of nod) are called the Kue Jing. According to Vampire - Bloodlines, their leader is Ming Xiao.
hope this answers some questions.
Lulu_Jane
24-03-2007, 02:51 AM
I guess so. I learned about the Pii Krasue from people that actually believe in them. Ghosts are just a regular part of life in Thailand, the "presence of ghosts" has halted the building of bridges, re-routed highway construction, and they live in every stucture made by man.
That's why all thai buildings have little replica houses outside their real house. It's a place where the ghosts can go and chill out, so as not to make problems for the living inside the big house.
According to a friend of mine, my apartment is inhabited by the ghost of a dog and a little girl. I wouldn't know, and I don't really care that much - but it always bemuses and amuses me that eberyone you meet here has such a fundamental belief in the supernatural. It's quite beautiful.
Hadiel
24-03-2007, 01:05 PM
Wow! that's like a guard dog's house, but without the dog and a ghost inside?!?! Mesmerized is me!
As for your appartement, you should tell Sebastianos! He's in the ghost departement, i'm in the undead departement... (???)
Since we're getting warm in the Ghost / Vampire related things, here's a fun one.
Name 4 weaknesses of both ghosts and vampires and (if possible) what they leave behing when they die (again)...
NOTE: there are actually more than 8 for vampires and 5 for ghosts so "git creative!"

BWAHA HA HAHAHA!!!!
