Yay! I get to be the first to thank you for introducing me to this game. I'm not very far in yet, but it's really impressive. Thanks again for the massive uploads. It must have been murder getting it all together.

Hey, a new member! :bye: :D

Welcome to the site. As for the Mega Update... it took me a few weeks to get it all together, but you guys are worth it. :ok:

I also made it because I wanted to come back strong after some prick stole my old laptop (I have bought a new one now. Set me back 900 Euros  ). But now I am back, and I am strong! :Brain:

Runs fine for me under XP.

Fantastic game with excellent graphics\animations.. damn hard though, maybe I shouldn't have put all those stats into strength

I cannot for the life of me find the Old One or the Armorer in this version of the game. Is this a crippled version?
As it is I always end up in the 1st dungeon with no weapons and get my arse kicked (when I eventually find creatures...seems to be a lot of already dead ones?)

wonder if a sequel has ever been considered or done ?

I don't think so.
Pity !

BUt then again I can't even get anywhere in it. The Old One and the Armorer seem to be missing from their rooms at the beginning. Only the Wizard is in his room.
As a consequence I have to enter the portal without any weapons or having been given my mission, and promptly get killed by whatever I meet.

Hi i think this game is great, never heard about it before but when i first played it i soon realised its potential.

anyway i have a problem with the game.
It works perfectly (although not in XP or dosbox) on my pentium II. Except for one thing, the voices doesn't work. If you turn them on then the game locks up as soon as they should begin talking, but when you turn them on i have no problems... anyone else having this problem or is it in fact not meant to be voices?

As one of the developers of the game...

Thanks for the embarrasingly good review and kind words.

Yes, a sequel WAS discussed and planned... but the publisher (New World Computing) passed to instead focus on their own Might and Magic titles.

<shrug>

Again, thanks all.

Yay, got it to work, used Dosbox (When I figured it out, I'm sooo stupid, it was obvious) Only problem is, it runs really slowly, even if I adjust the speed with ctrl+f12, like, really badly lagging, anyone know anything I could do to ease that? :hairpull:

Runs in Dosbox but the mouse is laggy ...then again everything I run in Dosbox seems to run like crap.

Why though I have a good computer :\

Do I have to build a stupid old DOS machine for games to run well? pathetic =D

Can someone send me their Profile settings for running AoD under D-Fend/DosBox? I'm having endless trouble getting it running at all- it often won't let me even select a character. The mouse moves OK, but it completely ignores the left-click.

Also, someone here said they'd gotten it running under XP. I'd love to know how, since the Dos4gw extender is usually fatally incompatible w/Win32 protected mode...

Thanks!

I'm not fully sure how I got around it. Basically it seems like you should head on down and walk around the room at different angles to see which one works. As simple as that sounds I believe that's what I did to get past it.

As far as I noticed, the energy and mana is renewed automatically. So maybe it's enough just to stay in one place for some time? ;-) (never tried it, though)

Well, I bought and played this game when it first came out, but I must have done something wrong: I didn't like it at all. It was just boring. For some reason I kept on playing (nothing better to do, I guess), but it didn't get any better.
I can't even explain why I didn't like it, because I just can't remember any details, it was that boring. I think the fights were tedious and all the same, and, well... you too rarely found interesting items like a better weapon, I think that was another reason.
I can't agree to the review at all; but then, maybe I should download it and try it out once more...

that's weird really, the game was released in 1995, by that time Win95 were released as well, so i assumed by using compatibility mode for win95 the game should work, however i still get that cpu cracking black screen. unfortunately i cannot use dosbox since u need a nice modern pc to use it. i tried manipulating the memory of the executables but still nothing....... is there any way around the problem without using dosbox? i've seen in the previous threads that someone got it running under WinXP with no problem. I am curious to see what kind of settings he applied in order to do so. I'll play around with memory and compatibility methods a bit more but it's nerve cracking as that black screen reduce my cpu speed to virtually zero! :rifle: :help:

Excellent site :ok: I have just started playing AOD again which works well in Win98SE and I do remember completing this game several years ago

I already have ripped version AOD by Warrior (160 mb in rar files) plus animation addon (130 mb in rar files) which is almost complete. As I am ware the only missing files are the introduction.

Can anyone tell me what is the introduction like? I'm just curious how interesting is the story :w00t:

Let me reply my own stupid question :D You save the game through the Character Sheet. To go into the Character Sheet, the shortcut key in keyboard is "C". In the Character Sheet screen, there is a diskette icon, which will take you to the Save/Restore screen. You can save there.

Okay, now after 579 save files and countless hours of playing I finally finished the game. Two words: awesome and disappointing.

The game is awesome. It gives enough enjoyment in the adventure aspect, and it is also quite friendly enough for RPG newbie like me. It does not throw a lot of statistics (I'm horrible with statistics). It is full of action, both melee and spellcasting, and it is necessary (at least in my case) to progress in both departments in order to survive the game.

It is quite disappointing in the end, however, due to the fact that the version here does not include the ending movie/cutscene. So there was I, standing in front of the Warlord himself, refusing his Darth Vader trap, and when I walked into the Anvil of Dawn, the game ended abruptly without any ending movie/scene whatsoever. I only got a message screen, "Congratulations for completing Anvil of Dawn. Brice your score is 134893. Send your score to: Hall of Heroes, New World Computing, blah, blah, blah..."

If I'm not mistaken, there is a limit of 100MB per game that is not in the VIP section. Since Anvil of Dawn provided here is 71,316 KB in size (around 70MB?), couldn't the ending movie be fitted in the remaining 30MB? Just curious.

Anyway, this is one of the good games, and I recommend it to anyone. I heard that Lands of Lore is similar to this one, I'll probably try it in the future. Right now I just started playing another game, so maybe I'll try Lands of Lore in June or July.

I have managed to find at last the missing bits - the movie intro/ending and bits between :max: and happy to say all working fine so far. :ok:

Anvil is very much in the same genre as Lands of Lore, so I think you
will like Lore after Anvil. The final movie is really great and does
help give a sense of completion to the game.

A great game.

This game is great, so thanks to the guys at Abandonia for uploading it! It seems to work OK in Dosbox; I'm using a Pentium 3 600 Mhz and have it running at 3400 frames with frameskip set to 2. If the game locks up (which it can do on the character selection screen) you need to disable the character voices : disable the soundblaster in the program setup and then in the game options turn "voices" off - you can now enable soundblaster digital sound again in setup. You can also speed up the game by disabling digital sound. Does anybody know how to get the voices working? The music sounds great selecting General Midi music (which Dosbox supports).

I think (not entirely sure about it) that speech files, along with the movie files, are ripped from the archice so as to make it small enough (smaller than 100MB by the original size limit, prior to mega updates). So I don't think any setting would help since the files are missing anyway.

The other day I requested for the missing movie files to be added, but it seems nobody has it. Well, actually a fellow forum member has it but since the file is at IRC which I have no access to, I was unable to get it. You could ask again for the admins to add the missing movie and speech files, provided someone has them and is willing to upload to the server of course.

Thank u, thank u, thank u. Could I say more. A great game I played when it was released (1996 I guess, think I'm not wrong). U managed to take me back to the times when games were games and it wasn't all about sells, beautiful images and no storry, plot and it was all about that "feeling" u get from the old games, that sheer pleasure of playing.

Hi everybody !

First, let me thank you for abandonia, this site is very good...

Then, I would like to know if somebody had the same problem as me :

When I go in the undersea maze, my inventory is bugged... There is a strange object in here, and I can't take anything (it looks like a crab). When I played this game a few years ago, it wasn't like that... Could someone help me, please ?

(please excuse me for the langage faults I could have made, I'm not speaking English very well :tomato: )

There is no name for that strange object? So when you move your mouse cursor over that object, there is no text appearing? Strange... Anyway, have you tried reloading from earlier saved game files?

Guest
29-06-2005, 07:25 PM
I downloaded it again, but no change. Strange, really strange.

And yes, I saved the game before summoning the water creature. I summoned it, I entered the maze, and the object was still here.

And, I can say I can't see all the object. It's the up of the crab.

If you want, tomorrow, I will try to put my save on the web, give you the link to the file... Will you mind test my file ? (I can make two different save files...)

(but, of course, it's only if you want to ;))

rabadi
30-06-2005, 01:34 AM
You mean before you summoned the water creature the object was not there, and after you summoned it the object was suddenly there? Now that is really weird.

I don't have Anvil of Dawn installed on my machines anymore, and I have put the CD-ROM somewhere (unlabelled :wall: ), so I may need a few days to locate the disk in order to test your saved game file.

Alternatively, what character do you use to play? I played with Brice, and I have 579 saved game files  I keep the save game files on separate CD-ROM in another box, this time it is faster to locate. So, while it won't feel the same, if you happen to play as Brice as well and don't mind continuing with my saved game files, I can send them to you.

Who is Brice ? Even if he's not the character I took, I'm ok to play with him ;)

First of all, I see that you have registered, so let me welcome you to the forum!

Brice is the big bearded guy in green/brown clothes.

I was about to look for the CD-ROMs containing Anvil of Dawn and saved game files last night, when suddenly there was an electricity blackout in my area, forcing me to cancel my searching. Well, that happens rather often in a backwater area like mine. So, the search for the CD-ROMs has to wait until tonight after work. It'll take a few days, please be patient, sorry for that. I'm downloading your saved game files as I am typing this post.

In the meantime, I would like to suggest Lands of Lore, if you haven't played that yet. If you like Anvil of Dawn, you will like Lands of Lore. Sadly it is no longer available from Abandonia.

The character you choose is Ianmyrth.

I have tested your two saved game files, and yes that crab-like thing appeared. I cannot figure out what it is or how/why does it appear in the first place. Very, very strange

Okay, the size of my 579 saved game files in .rar (using WinRar (http://www.rarlab.com)) format is around 25MB. Without the .rar format they will be over 100MB. I am not sure I can send the whole thing, so for now I'll just attach 1 save game file, which is right after Brice entered the undersea maze. I hope it'll be fine. Let me know if you still like the other files.

Here's the link: http://www.savefile.com/files/1136136
Don't forget to rename the file as SAVE00.DAT.

Oh yes, not too sure what the exact meaning is (since English is not my first language), but I think backwater means a rather underdevelopment area :D

Well, the best of the best is Daggerfall (Elder scrolls II), even though it's full of bugs. But it's not abandonware.
Here, on Abandonia you could check World of Xeen, or Wizardry VII.
But Anvil is not bad. It's just not as good to me as it is to some people who are really enthusiastic.

rabadi
04-07-2005, 06:30 AM
I have never tried Daggerfall, just heard that it is really buggy even with patches applied. Well, maybe if it becomes abandonware someday (hope so), I will try it.

World of Xeen is definitely not for me, 'cause I do not prefer turn-based combat system. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against the idea of turn-based combat system, and there is nothing wrong with it. It's simply just not my cup of tea, that's all. If I'm not mistaken, Wizardry VII's combat system is also turn-based, so again I'll pass that one.

Then you can try Dungeon Master 2. Menzoberranzan is cool too, but not better than Anvil (even worse maybe). The eye of the beholder series is cool but they are ESA.

I also have tried Menzoberranzan, even before it is put up here in Abandonia. Somehow the fluid movement (as opposed to frame-by-frame like in Lands of Lore and Anvil of Dawn) gave me headache (literally), which is very strange since I have played a number of FPS (First Person Shooter) and do not get headache after playing. It's just that one particular game Menzoberranzan that does it.

Lucky me, I have downloaded the Eye of Beholder series from Abandonia long before the ESA incident. Agree on these games, they are :ok:

Well, the best of the best is Daggerfall (Elder scrolls II), even though it's full of bugs. But it's not abandonware.
Here, on Abandonia you could check World of Xeen, or Wizardry VII.
But Anvil is not bad. It's just not as good to me as it is to some people who are really enthusiastic.
Daggerfall will certainly become abandonware one day... It began with arena...

We shall see what we can do. :ok:

Hi guys, I need some help. I'm stuck at the Temple of the Moon. I got the sacred cipher for the tears and I talk to the oracle with the cipher on the cursor but the Oracle just 'refuse' to weep. Help anyone.
Thanks.

( aplakat ): to get the tears of the moon just place the siphon (purple jar) on your cursor (not the left or right hand) and when the oracle sheds a tear, move the mouse over it and click on it with the jar. I did'nt have to talk to her to get it.

Now I have a question: I've read that you can get the Howl of Mortal Anguish (Wind Spell) in the Temple of the moon. After getting all the quest items i realized that there were unexplored areas in the temple. Using the Eye item of automapping i noticed inaccessible areas: 1) a long horizontal corridor South of the 1st floor. 2) a passage on the West side of the 3rd floor (this one i accessed by placing an xtra Gold Talon on the wall after the one required to open the door, ie 2 talons in that wall). 3) An inaccessible room in the SE 3rd floor.

I have no idea how to access area 1 or 3 and would like this spell.

Also: I acquired Ritual of unmaking (tho i've read you need 6 power to cast it). Does this mean that you need a natural score of 6? I'm using Daganoth unmodified with pwr 5 and an amulet of pwr +2 and have yet to cast it successfully.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.
BTW this is an amazing game, even without the sound samples.

Hi there! I played this game about 8 years ago and really liked it, as it manages to create a nice atmosphere and a truly imaginative world, not the typical monsters such as orcs, goblins and zombies. Every spell, enemy, NPC and place has its own personality. Even the translation of the speech was good (as I played a spanish version). The major problem I found in it is the combat system, as it can become a bit repetitive after you discovered some general strategies.

Anyway, I have one question about this game. Is there only one possible ending? Maybe this is a bit of a SPOILER, be warned if you haven't finished the game yet, but as I played it I remember getting something like a branches crown or similar that was supposed to keep your corpse or a thing like that. Would it make any difference if you weared it before the final confrontation in the Anvil of Dawn? I lost my savegames long ago. Anyone can tell?

This game has a great feel like dungeon master two and daggerfall though daggerfall would be my alltime fav . In ANYCASE Im stuck on the first room =X i cant seem to get past a pressureplate on the floor to have the door open.
ALSO For most DOS games my brightness is very low . Im stuck with that small screen for dosbox on the dos games . Brightness slider is disabled when i try to adjust it in this game. Anyone have any tips how to get my moniter to pump out more brightness (its at full at its not that bright , very sad) or get dos mode to render more? thanka

I don't know how to fix your graphical oddity, but to use the pressureplate - simply put some rocks on it. After a certain weight, it will sink into the ground.

Well... what a disappointment this game turned out to be (at least for me). It started nice, felt nice, i stormed the first locations with all haste and grandeur...but...it soon started to get repetitive and very tedious. I'm a big rpg fan a was so happy to play another (supposed) masterpiece, but this one is not the case. I got pretty far in the game, but i couldn't continue, because it was no fun anymore... huge locations with the same monsters, very tough combat system which would be cool if the character could get healed more often than just at the altars (only if you are lucky enough and have the apropriate offering)... well, not a horrible game, but there are definitely much better ones.

anyway i have a problem with the game.
It works perfectly (although not in XP or dosbox) on my pentium II. Except for one thing, the voices doesn't work. If you turn them on then the game locks up as soon as they should begin talking, but when you turn them on i have no problems... anyone else having this problem or is it in fact not meant to be voices?
I also had it lock up when I turned voices on.

Run dosbox in fullscreen mode.

the brightness slider is kind of hard to grab..try grabbing a little below the slider.

hey fellas i was just wondering if the only way to cast your spells was to click on the icon. From what i read of the review it seemed to me that I could make the symbols on the screen to cast the spell but i can't seem to do that. (which would be super cool. I think i remember playing some game where you could do that and i loved it...)

... also it looks pretty groovy so far. I don't really get the deal with combat though. So far i am having alot of success with just clicking the sword icon as fast as i can and watching him slash the enemy repeatedly. Is there more to the combat system than this?

Maybe the game you are refering to is Arx Fatalis. There, to cast spells you had to draw the symbols in the screen with your mouse. About combat, I could be mistaken, but I think that you can also attack enemies by clicking on them with one of the mouse buttons, and depending on where you click, you deal them more or less damage. Every one had a weak point.

Played this game more than a decade ago, but didn't finish it. Don't know where the CD-ROM is any more!

I think I've seen Anvil of Dawn on sale in one of the shops near where I stay (re-issued by ... Ubisoft?) ... but I can't be sure.

Question: Would the game run under Win XP or WinME? Are there any patches I should know about?

I downloaded the 70+MB game from this site, and have experienced a host of problems (sound-related, it seems, judging from the various posts on this thread). If I can get the original game to run, I think it would be great!

aaerdan

Haven't bought the game yet...

On the game downloaded from this site...

In the underground maze of the Dark Lantern, I noticed that the rolling boulders start rolling sideways - wall to wall - if my character runs right after them (to maximise on the time I get running down the corridor) or if the boulder hits my character.

Meaning, in cases where it is a narrow corridor, my character can no longer use that corridor because the boulder blocks the way, appearing to roll side to side and stopped by the walls.

I solved the problem by reloading a previous save and NOT running after a just-passed boulder or getting hit by them.

Anyone faced this before?

Yes it does that. One workaround I figured is to make the boulder hit you, after which it will resume its normal course. So what you do is run into the boulder and move as if you are trying to force your character to pass alongside the boulder.

Hi - A stupid gameplay question - I've covered every inch of the Undersea Maze except the top and bottom areas that I can't seem to get into (bricks all around). I have 7 pearls and can't find the 8th, yet when I look at my automap every inch of the maze has been convered. I've used all the teleporters (except the ones I read about that are in the middle of the maze). I went back to all the chests and they're all empty, too. Can someone help?

Thanks!

Is there a way to get the voices, somehow?

Anvil of Dawn was the game that hooked me up in RPGs for good, and I would love to play it like it should be.

Actually, I think that without the voices (which, by the way, are all great) a big part of the magic surrounding the gameplay is gone.

Admins, anyone, any help??? The files missing shouldn't be too big, should they, so for someone that already has them wouldn't be a problem uploading them somewhere....

I am sorry, but no. We decided that those speech for the game was too much, when we added this game. I am not sure about the current situation, but I think it will still be too big. If someone has the original game, and would inform us how big a true ISO would be, we'd be more equipped to answer. However, right now, with the version we offer... there is no way to get speech, I'm afraid.

How does the ctrl-F8 and ctrl-12 work in dosbox? i keep hitting the keys during the game but it doesnt seem to speed up. Plus the number of cycles on the meu bar of the dosbox where i run the game from doesnt seem to change...

Very strange. Pressing Ctrl+F8 should increase the frames by 1 each time, while Ctrl+F12 should increase the cycles. Did you just download DOSBox? If you did, and it has always been like this, then it might be that your download got corrupted. Try downloading it again. That's the best advice I can give.

By the way...i just tried ctrl-alt-del to open task manager...and under performance --> CPU usage, i pressed ctrl-F12 repeatedly but the % only stayed at around 3-4%...plz help!

That will definately not work. Try the above tip :)

I encountered an odd problem and I'm not sure what causes it. After cleaning out the Lantern, I took the flute thingy and the lantern thingy to free the gargoyle thingy. I could easily step outside of the door leading to the pier, but as soon as I moved farther (to the bend in the pier), the sidebar would fail to return to its normal position and I'd be frozen in place. The sound works, but nothing else. Any ideas?

In regards to the last question the same thing was happening to me to when I got out of the Griffin Keep. I'd get outside and advance a few frames and then the lockup happened. The game was locking up also when I initiated dialogue with npcs. Disabling the voices option seems to have fixed things (for now at least).

I'm loving this game (although I really wish the voice and cinematic files were intact) but I have this huge fear that I'll invest a tonne of time into it and either get stuck somewhere or experience another bug. What the hell though it's a chance I'm willing to take.

You should be able to open the chests by clicking on them when your cursor turns into a green hand.

347 mb! ... a whopping 0.25 Gb just for cinematics and voices! ...I'd be willing to try that since the game (except for voices) seems to work for me (using Win98 1st Edition with Dos Prompt on AMD 450 Mhz machine). Only other complaint is that there are only 2 boxes on right side of screen for holding items in left and right hand. One has to always open the Inventory screen (a or c key - I forgot) to swap weapons....
-otherwise, excellent game with some puzzles to figure out...

Tom's review made this game sound so good and it is!

After initial troubles (my cursor would move but I couldn't select a character), I downloaded it directly to C:\anvil and got it working just fine. Yay! Don't know if that's peculiar to me, but I've gotten a number of games working this way. I use DOSBOX via D-fend.

Anyway, love this game and played a lot over the weekend but I'm stuck. I don't know how to "unsummon" the gargoyle in Dark Lantern. I have the horn of summoning in right hand and lantern in left. Now what? Clicking the horn on the gargoyle just brings up his conversation bubble. Clicking horn on pair of hands ( to "use" item) tells me it must be used on the gaming screen. I bet it's something realy simple but I'm flummoxed. Walkthrough just says, " Go back the way you came and unsummon the gargoyle."

Would really appreciate anyone who can help.

Hey, another guy who worked on Anvil here. Just wanted to say that it is wonderful that people are enjoying this game after all these years. Anvil was a "spiritual successor" to Dreamforge's earliest RPGs, and the gameplay was somewhat "old school" even for its time. The sequel was in pre-production (the working title was "Hammer of Night") when New World axed it.

For everyone who's asking about how to rest, well, other than standing around for a while you can't. But don't be afraid to use those health potions, they're not that rare. Sorry for those of you encountering bugs, some of them were probably my fault.

If you're looking for another great Dreamforge game, try the adventure game Sanitarium (but get a version with the movies). Anvil and Sanitarium are still the games I'm most proud of having worked on after 10 years in the industry.

I've noticed this with a number of games as well, but there's an easier way to get around it (particularly through D-Fend).

Edit the game profile, and go to the 'Mounting' tab. Edit whichever mount is there (or create a new one if there's none). Click the 'Browse' button, and find the directory you keep your game in (example: C:\Program Files\Games\). Mount that as 'C', and the game won't have to try going through Windows path names to get to its directory.

Hope this helps a bit.

Copy your "saves" folder to somewhere safe, then unzip the game files again, re-writing the previous installation. Then copy your old saves folder into the game directory. It will work fine again.

Your program crashed because you went into setup and chose auto-detect settings. I think it's the assembler routines contain self-modifying code which screw up the game files (dunno which ones).

One thing I really enjoy is carrying boulders with my mage!

You are carrying 132kg.
You are encumbered.
Your max limit is 60kg.

After a while of waiting I've catched it saying: 'You are less tired now' Does anyone know which ill effects it has?

Oh and forget about my previous question, it is not important what I asked about turning off spell effects.
Thing is I wasn't aware how long it takes to regenerate mana when I had asked. :) Now I'm trying to carefully not cast 10 spells per fight anymore, and I'm having a blast watching the spell animations slowly.

Hi there yes, I'm also having a great time with this game. You've got to try out the green fellow (Daganoth)! Cool animations. Have you fought the sea lobsters yet? Best fun so far. I've just finished the abandoned ship level.
I think the way-over-the-limit encumbrances slow down recovery time and also reduce attack and defense modifiers.

Guest

The abandoned ship level? There I am, too!
These lobsters are cool to fight because when they don't kill me first, I've gotta freeze them in place to be able to kill them. They can only watch how I slowly tickle them to death while caught in shackles of ice hehehe :)

And yes, exhaustion lowers strength and agility, that's what one only gets when fighting encumbered.

Underground City - the game gets better. Wicky I've just started using a new combat strategy for tough opponents. Hit-and-run: as long as you've got some room behind you. It works if you hang around only long enough to whack them once, and then back off while they swing futilely at the air.

Gaz, have you tried restarting the computer in MS-DOS mode, and then running a mouse driver before running the program? If it keeps crashing, try relaunching in DOS, with a minimal config.sys, just putting in your blaster settings and DOS running in himem.sys. This trick usually works for me.

I must say this game is really great, and because of the FM sound is better for old computers with Soundblaster/Adlib than new ones. I'm running it on an old laptop with Win95, which has an OPL chipset. Music by The Fatman!! Remember him?

What does stamina and agility do? I'm guessing agility is your defense? And stamina? Does it increase your chance to hit or what? It isn't your encumbrance because that's strength, so what does stamina and agility do?

For the guy that was having trouble with crashes, I have Win98 too and I stopped my lock-ups by disabling all my start-up programs through msconfig and rebooting before I play the game. Give that a try.

Hello,
I am quite new to this site and computers in general.I freely admit to vast lack of knowledge regarding any and every aspect of this whole computerized world, so my questions are likely to be humorously basic. For example: How do I post or comment on a game? I saw this option to reply to your post, but I don't know if I should burden you exclusively with my requests. Now after a good chuckle om my tab, please take amoment to respond...though as I think of it, I'm not quite sure how I would receive your response. I presume it will be posted here somwhere.
In faact I came here with an entirely different request. This Anvil of Dawn game seems quite interesting, however I don't quite understand how to play it. I am at the beginning of the game and I seem to be locked in a room. I'm certain there is a simple way to open the door, but I'll be darned if I can figure it out. Would you happen to know where I could get a manual for this game?

Thank You.
sincerely,
Sean P. Martinsen

Hi Szaemon, welcome to the forum. I googled for the manual for you but so far have not found one yet. Replacementdocs.com is usually a good source of game manuals, but I can't find manual for Anvil of Dawn there either.

Anyway, it's been quite some time since I last played Anvil of Dawn, so I don't recall the details, but try clicking with your mouse either on the door or on the wall. Maybe try looking for any lever or door switch or such, and the door should be opened. Remember to use DOSBox to avoid any problem. Make sure you also turn the sound off in the game, 'cause IIRC the sound (along with video) files are ripped off the Anvil of Dawn archive here so as to reduce the size.

Have fun playing Anvil of Dawn! :ok:

Hi Szaemon, welcome to the forum. I googled for the manual for you but so far have not found one yet. Replacementdocs.com is usually a good source of game manuals, but I can't find manual for Anvil of Dawn there either.

If you have any problems with DosBox, try having a look at the official FAQ (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php) on the project's site.
Basic Setup and Installation (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=Basic+Setup+and+Installation+of+Dos Box)
Command Line (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=CommandLine)
Z instead of C at the command prompt (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=FAQ%2FI+have+got+a+Z)
Internal Programs (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=Internal+Programs) (important, especially MOUNT)
Most of the stuff in there is not really needed, but youb would do best to familiarize yourself with the specific topics I linked to.
The mounting of your DosBox games directory, switching the promt to the emulated C: drive and clearing the screen from previous commands can all be executed from the [autoexec] section of dosbox.conf (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=dosbox.conf), so you won't have to re-type them every time round.
Frontend programs (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=DOSBoxFrontends) can help running DosBox with varying configurations for different games.
For both a more accessible user interface and oldschool feel, you can use Norton Commander (get it from our programs and utilities page (http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=programs) - scroll down to the bottom to find it). NC might seem awkward at first, but in fact it is a very functional genuine DOS era file manager frontend. It has a plethora of functions that will help you in navigating around the directories, while still retaining the command prompt.

Though all of this might seem complicated, it's very easy once you get used to it. So remember:

DON'T PANIC!!! ^_^

Great game---have really enjoyed it so far.

Anyone have any idea how to get into this one area in Quagmire? It's in the SE section and there are 4 teleporters diagonal from each other on the map. There should be a way to take one of those to another area---I can see a bit of that area on my map---but I just can't figure out how to make it work.

Anyone figure this out?

cmat

OK, got that figured out (just had to enter in the teleporters multiple times in multiple ways).

Now, I'm totally stuck in Fire Mountain. There is the one place to the East that has a small alcove with a plate you need to weigh down. But the alcove is surrounded by spinners and I can't make it happen no matter how hard I try. Is there a way to counteract the spinners or a pattern to the steps I need to take? It's so frustrating!

This game would be pretty good if it allowed the character to rest.

Since it doesn't its sadly more tedious because you will constantly have to wait till you are regenerated. Which goes so slowly that you might as well make a sandwich in the mean time.

Wich is a real shame! It could have been as good as the first Lands of Lore, and maybe even better!

Why didn't they add in a rest option?

Guest
09-09-2006, 02:11 AM
True. A resting option will be better. As such, when I played this game back then, I was forced to stand still and wait while my health slowly recovered. After a while, however, I guess I just got used to it. I think I usually left the game on to grab coffee, get some snack, or take a leak ^_^

As for the problem with the wizard, well, I did not experience that problem, so I'm afraid I can't help. I remember this problem has been mentioned in the past, though. Maybe try redownload the game?

You don't give enough information for us to help you. Do you play this game in DOSBox? If not, you should. I did not play this game in VDMSound, so I don't know whether it will work with VDMSound or not, but in DOSBox it will work. Also, try to turn the sound and music off. The game archive for Anvil of Dawn here is ripped, and so most video and some audio files are missing. This condition may freeze the game at some point if the game cannot find the files it is looking for.

Missing videos and audios certainly lower the enjoyment (especially the missing end-of-game video), but I sure had a very good time playing this game back then. So, for now I highly recommend you keep trying this game before taking *the easy way off the problem by playing another game* :bleh:

When you get a "Weapon level up" or a "Spell level up" you need to leave the dungeon you are in. Then you will get a popup screen that allows you to allocate your skill points.

Now, can anyone tell ME whether it feasible to play through the game relying mainly on magic? And will my spell points regenerate quicker if I pick a character with better Power attribute?

This game is freaking unbelievably awesome. Bring back hand-drawn monsters to CRPGs, they're so much creepier in this game than in any other game. The flesh piles in the underground city are both chilling and sad, and I have yet to figure out what the HELL those mutated monks are supposed to be. But seriously - Orange and green gorillas? Eh?

Wait until you clear out the underground city. You'll find some excellent weapons there.

If I recall correctly, the best weapons in the game are certain magical swords.

As for playing solely on magic, well, since this game is for one character only, instead of for multiple characters, *multi-class* is necessary and certainly will make gameplay easier. I played with Brice character back then, even so I used magic a lot, but still switched to melee often.

I was thinking more on the lines of picking the little sorceror guy, putting points in Power and relying mainly on spells for killing monsters and healing yourself. Playing as Foxwen (Power 2) I really only use the Heal spell and put my spell skillpoints in Flesh Magic to get more out of it. I rarely use the other spells, since they do too little damage. Is spell damage also upped when you have more Power?

To answer my own question from before: Experimentation shows that your initial Power attribute controls how much mana you regenerate every 10 seconds - 2 power gets you 2 mana, 10 power gets you 6.

I think I'll try a restart with the Sorceror.

Hmm... that one I cannot answer since I had only played with Brice. Yeah, it would be nice to play Anvil of Dawn again someday with different character. My regret is that if I play with another character than Brice, then I will find Brice dead along the way, crucified on a tree or something like that, according to what I read from a walkthrough. Since I played with Brice before, that will feel like my character gets killed.

I'm currently replaying as the sorceror with a power attribute of 9, 10 modified, with Laughing Skull and Iron Fist as my main offensive spells. Here are some thoughts:

-It is NOT feasible using only magic to fight the various baddies. Not only do you run out of spellpoints quickly, you also come across no-magic zones where you need a sword.

-Magic can still be your main killer, but you need to level your magic skills some first if you want them to do any significant damage. Don't worry, if you rely a large part on magic when fighting monsters, you will get spell skillpoints up the wazoo. I got 1 weapon skillpoint and 3 spell skillpoints just clearing out the undersea maze and sunken ship. I think the spell point progression is tied to how much damage you do to the monsters with your spells, and since I kill most low-level monsters with 1 Laughing Skull with 5 skillpoints in Lightning, that's a lot of progression.

-There is a piece of armour that allows you to cast Earth spells at half cost. I'm currently wearing it and spamming Iron Fists at everybody I meet without running out of mana. I'm hoping to find something similar for Lightning spells.

-There is also an item that allows you to regain twice the hitpoints when using the Heal spell. I suggest getting it ASAP, so you don't have to waste spell skillpoints on leveling Flesh Magic.

-I've dumped the two-handed sword and reverted to using another weapon. Twohander does a lot of damage, but exhausts you after 2 swings as a puny little sorceror. Not cool.

Playing as a magician is a lot more fun than playing as a warrior who only uses magic for healing. I scrapped the game I was already in progress with completely.

I assume it's the southwestern pressure plate you can't find? If that is the case, you need to check the hallway leading to the area where you insert the four lionhead keys. Somewhere along that hallway, there is a secret door facing south that leads to a teleporter and the last pressure plate. Look at the walls for shimmering.

There - I finished the game with the sorcerer using magic almost exclusively to battle enemies.

My end of game stats:

190 Hitpoints 1700 Spellpoints

Magic Skills:
Earth: 10 Wind: 6
Fire: 9 Water: 10
Lightning: 10 Flesh: 8
Void: 1

Total Spell levels gained: 47

Combat Skills:

Hacking: 2 Thrusting: 2
Slashing: 10 Ranged: 2

Total Combat levels gained: 12

I found playing as a mage character a lot more fun and easier than playing a fighter, especially in the endgame once you get the mana regeneration amulet. However: The game is massively biased towards Earth magic for one simple reason: You can aquire an armour (Banded Ironroot Armor) that allows you to cast Earth spells at half the mana cost early on, meaning that you should focus on leveling Earth Magic and keep on hitting enemies with Iron Fist. It's nearly as damaging as the Laughing Skull and costs less than half the mana with the Ironroot Armor on, which is without doubt the best armour in the game if you want to be an offensive spellcaster in Anvil of Dawn.

I found Fire magic to be totally useless but was very happy that I leveled Water and Air magic later in the game. Reflections of the Lake spell saved my bacon in the warlord's stronghold and the Levitation Spell (Forget the name) was also very useful for some puzzles. Lightning and Flesh I also leveled, lightning for an the Roaring Column spell and Flesh for the healing spell, both of which came in handy numerous times, especially with the holy branch from the tree.

Void magic is useless to level since the spells suck, but it saved my sanity on the very last level. *spoiler* In the invisible maze, you don't actually have to figure out the maze to finish the game. Just cast Ritual of Unmaking at the invisible walls and they'll disappear. It costs a ton of mana, but I'd stashed enough Yang symbols to fully replace my mana every time I cast it. 3 or 4 castings later, I had punched enough holes in invisible walls to finish the maze without having to map out the damn thing by hand. Please note: This trick does NOT work with the Wand of Unmaking you can also find.

In conclusion, while magic seems very weak initially in the game, it will become VERY powerful as soon as you get a few magic levels under your belt, and playing the sorcerer is highly recommended. Just be sure to set your initial Power level high, so you get a high rate of mana regeneration - Waiting around for it to happen by itself sucks.

Damn awesome game. Props to the developers.

If you use the freece-spell first and then use the spell where torrents of ice appear out of the ground (the spell you get in the waterfall from the mysterious looking guy) The waterfall spell will make 3 Times the damage it causes usually.

[/b]
I completely agree, I read the review and became excited, then I just downloaded the game, and I became very impressed with the first graphics. But at the first battle I was shocked, I was expecting something turn based not something like wolfenstein 3d!!! BORING battle. And RPG without a good battle system = half trash (the other half is plot, immersion, etc..)

Then you probably won't like Lands of Lore 1 and Eye of the Beholder Trilogy. These games use real-time battle system too. For me, it's the other way around, I would have stopped playing Anvil of Dawn very early in the game had the battle system is turn-based.

Hi, recently I started playing Anvil of Dawn again. I used to have the CD and played it about 7-8 years back, but I got stuck somewhere quite early and gave up. Now, I'm up to the Temple of the Moon.

I went to the Reed Plains to get the Ritual of Unmaking spell. When I cast it on doors and such, sometimes items from my chests disappear and appear as loot on the floor of the door I destroyed. If I do it again, it duplicates the loot i.e. they exist in two locations at once. If you pick it up in one place, and pick it up again in another place, the first one disappears from my inventory.

Anyone experience such a thing? From what I read on a AoD hint file, it says using Unmaking on doors, pillars etc. gives "useful items".

Moreoever, when my inventory is really full of rocks and potions and whatnot (I'm a real pack rat), and I mean like 100 rocks and 50 potions, when I enter new areas sometimes the game keeps getting errors. When I drink a lot of the potions and clear off the inventory, no more error. However, when I Unmake a few doors, sometimes I get the abovementioned chest items popping up on the ground bug, and subsequent Unmakings where the destroyed door leaves loot, the game crashes.

I almost completed this game but whenever I walk towards the Anvil after talking to the Warlord, my game hangs with an error "Unable to open credits.txt". My AoD is from Abandonia so it is missing many files I guess. Can anyone with the CD version put up their credits.txt for download? I believe it is in the data folder. Otherwise it could be in the RES.007 file in the Data folder.
Thanks!

I remember this game well. My mom got it for me on Easter. It scared the hell out of me, especially that first dungeon. Oooh... and those big monkey guys. I was terrified of them. My character was funny as hell, though. He was that big guy and I had him wearing a suit of armor made of seashells, a bloody shield covered in spikes, and a reed hat. He looked like a fool. It was very, very hard. Might have been my playstyle, though. Back then I believed in all brawn and no brain. I had to give up because I simply couldn't stand up to some of the latter fights. Might have to give this one another shot.

Emule is downloading files in 9-meg chunks. If the file is not downloading, this means that you have to wait for the queque. 20 minutes is far too little for any progress to occur, paricularly if there are very few sources to begin with.

And while im online waiting to download the next bit, someone uploads from me... [/b]
That's the way it works. Other people who download this file also upload it.

Upload more. This way, if a person downloads stuff from you their client stores "credits" for you. People with more credits download faster then those with less credits.

Upload more. This way, if a person downloads stuff from you their client stores "credits" for you. People with more credits download faster then those with less credits.

I thought 'sod this for a lark' and thought 'horseman has set this up as a joke!'[/b]
I certainly did not intend this to be a joke on anyone.

I have tried downloading three times, always goes the same way, downloads about 150mb at 20k plus, uploading 0k, then it goes to 6.0k upload 5k download at around 220mb and at 237mb it goes to 0.1 uploading 0.0k downloading, and this last time, stayed that way overnight and is still like that now.

Something is going on with this download as it's like no download I have ever seen, hence it being wise to stay away at the moment, I reckon! Never had a download muck me around as much as this one!

Im up to 380 MB now. And once in a while i download some chunks... Im only gonna keep eMule open untill this is downloaded, so I hope i can make it before my upload quota is reached :/

I think the problem with a file as big as this, is the credit system which wont allow us first in line, and therefore kicks us off when more "creditted" members wish to download...

When I get free upload/download, im gonna be online ALL the time for sure! Those credits are vital.

Jasmann, that's not what emule tells me! And no wonder I am getting 4.5k download and 4.6k upload, it's because of you! :)

EDIT: And even worse, how comes you have downloaded more than me and yet I am uploading to you at 14.5k and getting 0,00k download! Grrr!

Second EDIT: I am STILL trying to get this 500mb downloaded! THREE DAYS now! I will never use emule again and if this game had been for sale on ebay I would have taken that route out of frustration!

I just do not understand how clients can exist and be online and yet I cannot get anything downloading! I see you Jasmann as one of the clients, and do not understand why I have twice as long uploading and not downloading than I do downloading and not uploading. I have use bitorrent a couple times and once the download starts, it continues, it may be slow, but it doesn't keep stopping and it never has 0k downloading 24k uploading!!!

Maybe the client does not have any parts you need for the file.

Nope. The first and foremost problem is that there are very few people sharing the file. Remember what happens with torrents with very few seeds? Yup, the same thing occurs here.

humorguy

This is not my experience of bitorrent. With ferw seeds it's slow and even might stop, but I have never had 0k downloading and 16k uploading after 24hours of no action. What your dsaying is with emule, the person who has the whole file can go offline, and then if I am the one with most downloaded my PC stays on for 24 hours, using electricty to upload to everyone who hasn't downloaded as much as me, and if that person with the whole file doesn't come back on, i'm stuffed and by extension everyone else will be when they finished uploading my files. As far as I can see, bitorrent does not work like this.

Finally downloaded the CD version via emule. Hope I never have to use emule again!

Anyway. This file has text on screen that is in Russian, although the voices are in English. You need to download the version on Abandonia (if you haven't already done so) and copy over the files to the CD version folder, then you will get the English text back on screen.

I am playing the lady thief/rogue character (2nd from the left) and she has one of the sexiest voices I have heard in a computer game, so hopefully all the emule crap was worth it! :)

My experience leads me to quite the reverse conclusion. I've seen torrents die out within less then two months of appearing, whereas files stay around for far longer on ED2K.

ED2K takes longer to get stuff, but it's not vulnerable to tracker loss like Torrents are.

Can someone tell me if anvil plays without dos-box too.

I have dos-box but if i switch to full screen i lose a large part from the upper part of the screen for some reason and if i play in window mode it is too small. Is there any way to increase the window size of dos-box? or fix the full screen. ScummVM has an option for aspect ratio correction which fixes it, and also an option to increase the window size up to 3x. I have looked in the readme but didn't see something similar for dos-box.

Download D-Fend from the DOSBox site and set the screen to 640x400, or just generally, the front end let's you play around with variables a lot quicker and easier. Also with a front end, you set up the settings for the game and that's it. In DOSBox you have to do it for each game each time, so I highly recommend a front end like D-Fend.

You need to turn "Speech" off in the options menu. Since it's a rip, the game crashes when it tries playing speech files that don't exist.

I downloaded the full version off Emule. It's forgettable, voice acting isn't very good and the video cutscenes don't really add a lot. The rest of the game is absolutely fantastic though.

I agree about turning off speech to solve your problem, but I disagree about the speech. I thin even average speech (which it is in this game) is better than no speech and just text! This game totally rocks with the speech, but is still fantastic without, I agree! :)

I think if you have a foreign version and overwrite the files that get installed on the hard drive with the files from the version on this site, it will turn it into at least English on-screen text. Maybe even the speech.

Would somebody mind PLEASE seeding the full CD version (with the voices and other niceties) thru bittorrent?
eMule isn't even free anymore...its going the way of the dodo. BT is still going strong and it is a bit more practical for limited bandwidth sharing. If I managed to get it, I would definately continue to seed (share/upload) it for a couple weeks or so--in fact I think most of us here searching for it would be happy to pass the torch once we got it.

BitTorrent is a method of distributing large amounts of data widely without the original distributor incurring the whole of the corresponding costs of hardware, hosting and bandwidth resources. Instead of the distributor alone servicing each recipient, under BitTorrent the recipients each also supply data to newer recipients, thus significantly reducing the cost and burden on any given individual source as well as providing redundancy against system problems, and reducing dependence upon the original distributor.[/b]

Umm, this might sound like a silly question but no matter. I recently downloaded this 71mb zip version of the game, but I still remember a certain DEMO of Anvil of Dawn from like over 12 years ago. In that DEMO version, when you were outside of dungeons and moving forward or backward, the landscape would actually move in a quite nice animation as if it was a 3D view or something. While in this 71mb zip version, it would only animate while you are turning around, but when moving forward the screen would just change in one step.

Now I wonder, is this because it is a CD rip, or that flashy animation was just from that demo version? I mean, is the landscape fully animated in the full version, or not? That stunning animation (stunning for 1994 standards :) ) was actually the reason why I remembered this title, although I never played it - until I recently got this 71 mb rip.

Sorry, but as you might have noticed when reading the rules - torrents are off-limits.

Connect it to KAD network and leave it running for a few days.
Of course, getting a High ID also helps a lot

Japo
12-07-2007, 01:58 PM
The first concern about eMule is getting a high ID --besides having the latest version with all the features. If you get a low ID it's because eMule's ports are firewalled, open them. If you don't know what I'm talking about check the FAQ in eMule's homepage.

Your uploads only help you to download faster if you're downloading from someone who's downloading for you, I think. So you may want to set on release the file you want once you've got fractions of it, and any files that will presumably be downloaded by the same people.

EDIT: BTW torrents are bad only if they're protected games, downloading abandonware via torrent is not worse that downloading it via http or ftp?

I have never tried Daggerfall, just heard that it is really buggy even with patches applied. Well, maybe if it becomes abandonware someday (hope so), I will try it.

World of Xeen is definitely not for me, 'cause I do not prefer turn-based combat system. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against the idea of turn-based combat system, and there is nothing wrong with it. It's simply just not my cup of tea, that's all. If I'm not mistaken, Wizardry VII's combat system is also turn-based, so again I'll pass that one.
[/b]

Different strokes for different folks. I much, much prefer turn based combat because:

1. Turn based combat allows me time to think and strategize during combat, which to me, is one of the aspects of RPG's I like the most.

2. Real-time combat generally amounts to nothing more than a twitchy, click-fest. If I'm in the mood for that kind of action, I'll load up a shooter and blast away.

In this particular case, Anvil isn't half the game Wizardy VII is. That holds true whether one prefers real-time or turn-based combat.

Despite the real-time combat, I figured to give Anvil a try based on the glowing review. I was disappointed. The game looks good for it's age and does have a refined quality about it. The story is compelling enough too. But there were too many things I didn't like.

1. The game is way too simplistic for an RPG. Head & body are it for armor locations, there is not nearly enough weapon variety, there's very little to character development... To me, Anvil is to RPG's what Mario Kart is to racing sims.

2. The "puzzles" are way too easy. Move blocks, put stones on pressure plates, etc. Nothing challenged me.

3. I don't like the way the dungeons are - obstacles like periodic fire rain, rolling boulders, laughing heads, etc. belong on a Lara Croft type game, not an RPG. What kind of a keep would have boulders rolling around in it anyway?

4. The combat is a boring click-fest. Gets really old really fast.

5. And finally, the only innovative / really original concept is the spell casting animations. Everything else has a been-there-done-that feel to it.

I played until I got part way through the underground village, and I can't bear to go any further. For folks who love action RPGs this is probably a good fit, but for die hard RPG fans like myself, not so much.

Blood-Pigggy

I agree. I've always wondered what makes these 1st person step by step 3D pixelated RPGs so addictive (relative to their technical and gameplay lameness) and I never reached a rational answer. But whatever it is this game doesn't have it IMO.

Yes, I've downloaded it from here!
And I'm using the DOSBox-Version 0.71, so I don't think it's a problem with the version-number.

I've started the game alternate with "D-Fend v2".
I can talk with the prisoner three sentences and then I get this failure:

Translated in English it's:
Can't find "encouter keyword 1" 'greet' in "encounter 5"
Press "F" to continue
Press "ESC" to quit

So, when I press the F-Button, I don't have the option "Greet" in the Multiple-Choice menu on the right side of the window, only "Dead" - and when I press "Dead" nothing happens.

That's very strange!

You can find Anvil of Dawn, the FULL CD-ROM version (with speech and other extra niceties) on a few torrent sites. Look around for it. Don't download it as part of a "Abandonware" pack torrent, however; those usually just contain the floppy-diskette version.

I would post the link to torrent I got it from here, but I doubt I could find it again = ( It's just one of those unfortunate circumstancesthat I can't seem to find the torrent, so I don't intend to EVER delete this from my hard drive. I wish the rest of you better luck, though.

The speech...totally worth it. The female voice actress is amazing, as is her male counterpart. She makes the characters she speaks through come alive, and reads their lines professionally, with inspiring emotion and a dramatic (though not corny) flair. It simply makes this game 100% better.

Guest
08-09-2007, 03:27 AM
I totally agree about the CD-ROM, it is just so much better with voices.

I got myself a copy of eBay a while ago.

By the way, in case it was not mentioned, make sure you have the latest version (there is a an official patch floating around) otherwise the game might crash as you try to leave the castle you teleport to in the begining.

This game is really amazing, even though fighting is tedious, the story line is awesome: from the book shackled in the tree, the demon under the sea, and so on.

If you get tired from the fighting, and you find yourself spending too much time waiting around to heal, cheating is always an option :sneaky: makes life easier and also get access to some spells that are impossible to find.

I'm a big big fan of this game and it is a bit of a shame to see people having so many problems here.

Are there any chance of this ever being released open source? You only need to find once dev who loved it to be able to port it to new systems.

I know the dev house and publisher no longer exist. Does anyone know who brought the licence? or is it in limbo?

Well, I downloaded this game as it was one of my favorites when I was younger. It's disappointing to see that they weren't able to include the cut scenes or the voices. As it is, though, I have recently found my old CD that I had bought way back when, but I can't seem to install it. I double-click the install file, and it brings up a command prompt for a little bit, but that disappears and then nothing happens.

Is there something special I need to do to install the CD version properly? Thanks!

And don't forget to mount your CDDrive as D.

Seconded - DOSBox. Google it and learn to love it, and download D.O.G from the same page as DOSBox and use it instead of DOSBOX to set up the game.

I use DOSBox, but whenever I try to mount the CD drive it gives me an error. I've tried running the install through a command prompt but was told to run the install off the CD. Oh well, maybe I'll do some digging on the DOSBox site when I get home.

The Dosbox readme says:
mount d X:\ -t cdrom

Replace the X:\ by your real CD-Drive letter in windows.

Maybe you could try that?

Just a thought ......

Ah, nice. Thanks for the link. I crashed right when I got home from work so I wasn't able to check anything out. I'll try to do that when I get home today. Thanks!

If you had used D..O.G. you would not have had to deal with that and would not have had that problem.

Meh. Frontends are for the weak. ;P
Besides, you don't actually need them for anything. All they offer you can aready do using DOSBox' integrated options (like running multiple config files).

Yea right 5th Horseman.... So how comes in D.O.G all you have to do is set the letter of your CD drive and that is pretty much it? Compared with what you have to do in DOSBox which caused the above guy problems, caused him to waste his time and then have to come on here so someone else has to use some of their time to tell him what to do? All that time wasted - that's what a front end saves! So much for insulting anyone who just would like to have an easier life of having multiple DOS games running as sweet as they can - and on average, better than you can get them in vanilla DOSBOX!?

Just because you know the in's and out's of DOSBOX don't mean people who don't know it have to when there are perfectly usable front ends designed to make playing DOS games so much easier, and if it weren't for people like you, front ends would be much better know about and guys like the above wouldn't waste god knows how long trying to get a game to work in vanilla DOSBOX!

Wow, didn't really mean to start any fights or anything. Anyway, thanks again for the help. I was hoping to create an ISO, though, so that I could play it without the CD in. Anyone have tips on that? Thanks!

Look here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_image
Be sure to check the 'List of ISO image software' on that page.

And that's no fight, just a small discussion :)

I must say that I agree with The Fifth Horseman here, frontends are neat, yes, t'll the day a game won't work with it.
Then you're in hell, completely.
It's a small effort to learn work with dosbox without frontend, you can easily work with several dosboxconfigs or batch files to ease your typings.

1. You didn't notice the smiley. ;P
2. "Easier" does not always equal "Better".

Just because you know the in's and out's of DOSBOX don't mean people who don't know it have to when there are perfectly usable front ends designed to make playing DOS games so much easier,[/b]
Just because people can use wheelchairs doesn't mean their legs are obsolete.
Frontends work wonderfully - until the user finds a game which needs some specific fine-tuning of config or conflicts with the frontend. And then these people end up here anyway.

And all the while it doesn't take long to create a customized shortcut and config that let you run a specific game in DOSBox just by double-clicking on a shortcut.

if it weren't for people like you, front ends would be much better know about and guys like the above wouldn't waste god knows how long trying to get a game to work in vanilla DOSBOX![/b]
Most - if not all - frontends are linked to from the DOSBox site to begin with.
Second, nobody says they have to know everything about DOSBox. Knowing some of the basics is a different thing altogether.

Hi. I finally get the German Version of this Game in Ebay. The Files on the CD are about 500MB.
I copied all Files in a Subdirectory on my HD and mount it as CD Rom in Dosbox.
It works perfect till present.
I’m not sure whether an ISO file needed?

I have also packed it with WinRAR and spitted it in 4 Files,
3x 100Mb 1x60Mb.
When somebody interested in this RAR Files I can upload the Files on Rapidshare.

This is a German Version only, so no English Text or Sound is included.

Edit your dosbox.conf and add this to the very bottom:

mount v v:\

If you have an image drive labeled V:\ (which I use because v= virtual , very comfortable to remember) you load the ISO and start Dosbox.

---
Then go to your dosbox install folder, rightclick dosbox.exe and choose "copy". First you have to go to your Documents and Settings folder which is on my computer "c:\documents\Wicky\SendTo" and rightlick into it. Then choose "copy shortcut to this location"

--

Now it's easy, no more work needed ever. Just need to rightclick on any .exe on your computer and "send it to" -> "Dosbox" voilá, Image will load automatically, and start dosbox, and lauch the game with just one mouseclick with no additional programs.

Yep, that's indeed much easier than input in dosbox:
imgmount d x:\whatever.iso -t iso

Ahem. Could a kind soul please direct me to the location where invincible iron can be found in the Iron Titan? I seem to have missed it and cannot get the container made... I went back but still can't find it.

Thanks in advance,

I too am stuck in the maze. I am looking for the 8th pearl, I found 7. I have been everywhere (except the center of course) and have opened all the chests. What do I need to do to get that last pearl? Thanks.
(I realize my previous replies did not have enough info)

Guys, Anvil of Dawn's ISO has been posted in the ISO Cellar forum, but not tested. My connection is slow, it will take me all day just to download the file(s). So if there is someone with fast connection willing to test it, kindly let us know :amused:

EDIT: Oh wait... it seems that catchaserguns has done it. Many thanks to Ermuli, _r.u.s.s., and catchaserguns!

So, back in the day, I played this game. It was the first game I ever actually finished. Although, I believe there was a mountain or castle I could not get into. I didn't need to in order to finish. This game was SUPER! I thought the puzzles were a good mix to the hack n slash. Main issue: To regenerate, run around a lot, no way to 'quick sleep'.

Now, I may have to get this game and play again. This site rocks!

Wizardry VII, MM 3 (another game I adventured in for some time, but DIDN'T finish). I had forgotten MM3 (remember the story and such but not the title so much) until back when MM 6 came out. Now, I have found MM3 again.

Hi, there,

Well, I am playing the game Anvil now. The level is The Barrier.
My goal:
The main goal here is gather up four ivory lion keys and place a stone block on each of the four pressure plates found at each corner of the dungeon.

OK- I placed these 4 stone blocks onto relevant 4 dungeon corners, I found all 4 keys, no result, the doors not opened. I did again and again- in vain- the doors still closed.
Pls help me.

..
But maybe this fail is because at the previous level
The Land of Roots
I do not know how to heal the roots. I found all roots but I dunno how to heal it?
You know , amigos? Help me pls..
To heal roots – How ? With some magics? Some other action?

All advices are welcomed.
Ty for your help.

Thankful BG yoga

My DOSBOX (under XP Pro) is perfect - fast and reliable
