The review mentions something called the "Star Trek cantina." The cantina, of course, was in "Star Wars." I don't have a problem with it, but I know some otherwise very nice people who do. :D

Thanks for this very cool looking game. I love this type of game and it was a great review. Really made me want to try it.
I downloaded it last night and tried it today using dosbox (boxer start). I tried using the setup.bat as per the instructions within the zip file, but got a message "unable to delete pic.ace". There does not appeat to be this file within the zip.
When I try to open it without using the setup - just using the css.exe file it appears to start to load and the initial screen with the games name appears, then just a black screen.
I tried using the setsound.exe and it said sound blaster was detected, but when I tried to use the css.exe file I got a message "unable to allocate memory for sound/voice directory cache."
Hmm... Anyone else having this problem or any ideas of a fix.
Thanks.

I get the same error message about the game being unable to allocate memory for the sound/voice directory cache.
I use DOSBox or VDMSound.
Anybody managed to figure this one out?
Thanks in advance... Much obliged.

As for the "Memory Cache" problem, two steps solution:
1. Run Setsound with Vdmsound and select "No Digital Audio".
2. Run Ccs.exe with Vdmsound and there you go...

By the way, the Callahan books of Spider Robinson are very nice. They can get a little repetitive, but when enjoyed bit by bit every now and then they are preciously excellent and leave a nice, warm feeling down in the cockles.

I didn't know there is a cantina in Star Trek. I do know that there is a cantina in Star Wars. Anyway, no problem, since I like both Star Wars and Star Trek :D
A question: in HOTU the size of the game is roughly 68MB, lower than the size here. I take it the version here includes speech (which is removed in HOTU version)?

Nope.
Difference is ZIP and RAR ;)

Huh? Both are in .zip format if I'm not mistaken. Anyway, I downloaded the version here last night. I will play it later tonight :ok:

I am currently playing this game. Mine did not freeze when I try to enter that bar, though. It freezed at some other points. However usually when I restart the game and load latest saved game, it works fine.
There is this patch for the game that can be downloade here: http://www.mysterymanor.net/pafiledb/pafil...tion=file&id=36 (http://www.mysterymanor.net/pafiledb/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=36)
I haven't tried that patch yet since it states the previous saved games will be obsolete and I'm too lazy to start over from the beginning, so I can't guarantee that patch will solve the problem or whether it will work at all.
Anyway, nice game. It does run painfully slow in DOSBox (with 8000 cycles) in my low end machine, but a nice game nevertheless.

Uhmm.... it seems like speech is not the only thing missing from the archive. I reach the point where Stonebender guy was telling the doctor about his family. I think there should be a movie at that point. Since the movie is ripped from the archive, can someone tell me what exactly happened to his family?
rabadi
04-03-2005, 07:42 AM
Finally finished it last night after a long delay. Not bad, though I still prefer earlier Legend Entertainment games such as Death Gate and Shannara. I still don't know what happened with Stonebender's family since the movie is ripped.
Anyway, I would give 3 out of 5 rating for this game :ok:

Hello,
the difference is not ZIP and RAR. Underdogs got the Original without Speech. The difference is the file pic.ace which contains the 52 picturefiles. You have to unpack it with SETUP.BAT . All files are identical.
There is no digital audio because speech is missing. You should select and configure MIDI music driver in SETSOUND.EXE to get sound.

Of course running it with no sound will fix a sound-related error!
You're an *** no insults! -strobe. He wants to know how to fix the problem AND run it with sound.
I'm having the same problem and I have no idea how to fix it. The problem is duplicated with DOSBox, VDMSound, and running it native in WinXP... Always ""unable to allocate memory for sound/voice directory cache." It's getting on my nerves.

When I click on things in the room he gives reactions so he is in the room, but I can't see him anywhere and his picture at the bottom is gone so I don't know how to hand the tool to him! I hope someone can tell me how I can move on.

What is VDMSound or VDMS?
I'm trying to play this game as well and I'm getting the memory cache problem. Unfortunately since I don't know what VDMSound is I'm kinda' having problems understanding the fixes. Help? :)

Okay, I'm not so sure the VDMSound thing matters so much anymore. I did what was suggested earlier and only applied MIDI Sound. Is there digital sound for this game? After a couple of the other posts I'm confused.
Anyway, now that I've done this the music is very choppy. Also, the game loads VERY slowly. It loaded incredibly slow before the music setup. Since the load time was not altered by the addition of music, I do not believe the two to be linked.
I'm running the program in DOSBox on a WinXP system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sound:
the base setings are no sound at all.
Switch to different needs run setsound.bat(?) Than run ccs.
On weaker PC-s can have low cash. By a better machine or just leave this option.
I work on a 450MHZ and can run it with MIDI (background music). So no speech or FX, but it sound good.
Sound card setting: use autodetect. If any point said that card is not avaiable try another. Or try manual settings (I always have trubble with that).
Where is the ally party member (Noah on space ship or so) ~physically:
place the mouse on the down of the screen. his/her face will appear. To give anything to them klick on item than klik on the face (or other items or...)
:help: Question: how to complete with the maintenance-bot?
I wear fake teeth, fake eyes (cantact lense), the suit, 4 glowes, can indicate the scan (with the UFO's car-key), vut no "refreshment", and can"t ask Noah operate the other two "hand) - accorded to the manual.
What I do wrong?

parts unsolved according to the manual:

- how to ask Noah to handle the other two arms?

Trying to run this game in linux using DOSBox. It runs slow to the point of being frustrating to play. How are the rest of you running this? I have an XP partition and can install there if need be.
Game looks great otherwise. Would really like to get this running properly.

The program requires a mouse. That is not working under dos. Run it under Windows (use dosbox if needed, but the W. still required to run).

why is this game "protected" (ESA- no go!, and all that...)? none of the othe games by Mindscape are (some are "sold" offcourse, but none actualy "protected").

Mindscape is an ESA subsidiary company. This means their games are subject to a ten year protection period (a minimum of ten years must pass since publication before we are allowed to put up a download of the game in question).
All their other games are either new enough to still be for sale somwhere or old enough for the protection period to expire.
