This game is awesome even though it gets totally rediculous. Everything about this game is great, sound, gfx, controls, gameplay. If you get a chance try the 2 player mode, I played that with my younger brother for a couple of hours a few weeks ago.

I haven't checkeed the zip from this site but the one I have has a ship designer, it's nice touches like that that make me replay a game.

There are two versions of this game, a Windows version and a DOS version. The game on the site is the DOS version. It requires DOSBox to run flawless, but it CAN be played in Windows (with no sound). That is why it has all three compatibility flags :evil:

As for tactics, I'd say get a Maelstrom (regenerative armor > thick armor). Arm it with Zica laser, perhaps the Sonic rear gun, and either Atom bombs or Zica flamethrowers for sidekicks. Get the best shielding and generator and it is unstopable. :Titan:

I'm having some trouble with this - when I destroy the Dreadnaught on the last level of episode 4 (Dread-Not - awful pun), rather than loading a lovely message congratulating me, the game freezes on a black screen, and on forcing DOSBox to close i get an error message which reads something like "error: memory could not read" (i'd have to do it again to get the exact message) any suggestions?

it's in DOSBox on Win XP 3GHz PC with 1GB of RAM and I'm running around 10000 CPU cycles in the emulator.

Hey guys ... was ramblin around the site and came across this game - it's one I've been trying to remember for years - not just for the main game tho (even tho it was, and still is fantastic), but it's got a hidden game in it! The hidden game is similar to the old scorched earth but more real-time based and suped-up gfx + sound. Now I'm off to trawl the web (and my old PC mags) to find the cheat code!

I've always heard great things about this game (I come from the Raptor camp) :D So I decided to give it a spin. It actually looks very promising, but there seems to be a slight glitch: the game (sfx and graphics) actually slows to a crawl when clouds appear on screen (running on 9k cycles dosbox)... once the clouds leave, however, the game speeds up to an insane speed. Any ideas why this is happening or if they is a way to disable the clouds altogether? Thanks.

Oops. I found out why. My details settings was set to Pentium: the game attempts to make the clouds semi-transparent (unheard of in a dos game, I'm sure) which lags the game to hell. Setting it on 'high' instead fixes it quite nicely. Now for some mayhem.

These kind of games always get me quite frustrated when it gets too hard (in this case too hard equals too fast, even in slow mode). I guess that's why I like Zone66, Tubular wolrds and Raptor better, there's more time to think and enjoy the scenery :P I do like the buying system though, and the sounds\music are great too.

The clouds at Pentium setting stopped lagging when I increased the DOSbox cycle rate a bit, but the game got even faster as well

The carrot ship is the best ship! there's a way to get it in the buy mode.

I remember playing this gaim from it first realese in sherware.com it only had first chapper, and I played it all the time!!! in that version, when u finished the chapter u were sent to a bonus lvl that had a circus song, they changed ur ship to the one u get in arcade mode, and here, it fired big missil, then many enemys were thrown at u. I f u survived and made enough point they give u the carrot ship and its banana weapon but with no upgrad, AND NO EXTRA MONEY!!
but since it was tha last lvl u started again chapter 1, so it wasn't that bad.
Until u get the ship in the complet version!!!(got it once, don't remember how)

Yesterday I found it here, downloaded again, with a bit of messing up the setup, it work great! (I'm running 98SE here, no need of Dosbox. Just config your sound card and you're ready to go :D )

Using the arow buttons and the spacebar. Just try stuff like mortal combat moves and stuff. It only works in arcade mode, unless your ship is special (like a gencore). Gencore ships just move up and down while rapidly pressing the spacebar. But don't fly into anything...

Hey Tyrian is Da Bomb... I hear that is discontinued and apparently the guys who redid tyrian2000 went out of business. Thats too bad as i do not think Epic Mega Games owns the tyrian licence, so it is basically owned by nonone? I suppose some fans could make a Tyrian 2 as Tyrian2000 was just a upgraded version of Tyrian the Original.

One of my Favourite Abandon Games, i love this gem, because it unites pur Action with a good plot and the ability to upgrade.. seems to be the best Space shooter ... though i didn't get to play them all..

I'm never bored when i play this game, cause there are so many secrets/mini games special arcade modes, tricks and at least the ability to build ur own custom space ships...

I got the old DOS based version of it on my first pc back in '95 or so. It was awesome, I played it for hours on end at times. And when things got tough, I'd just set it to Pentium detail and evade the hordes of bullets. XD

I totally love this game, i played the demo back in the days for countless hours and even got a chance to buy an original cd version at some point (still have it :P).
2player mode rocked even more, player 1 with joystick, and 2 on the keyboard...

However, with Tyrian original as well as Tyrian 2000, the game slows down a considerable bit when platforms come in sight (slideshow, boring slow). The same as with clouds but you can turn clouds off... anyone got a tip to fix this? I tried the -FLICKER.

in setup, select Game Detail and press "Shift+W", the game will now be set to 'wild graphics mode'. It's just a step higher then Pentium and adds waves across the entire screen. It used to run supersweet on my older computers, but now it's slow as ... hmm... slideshow slow!

I'm running windows xp and dosbox 0.61. got an amd 3000+ but had the same problem with my p4 1,8Ghz...

I personally use the Laser, Guided Microbombs, Plasma Storm and the BattleShip Class FireBomb, along with the highest Generator and Shield. I am invincible with it, and it doesn't matter whether I use these weapons with the Prototype Stalker C, the Stalker 21.126 or the Nort Ship.

Yep, thats one of the reasons I hate this game. With laser/lightning canon/front zica lazer you are nearly invinsible in all skill levels and episodes. In suicide and lord of the game skill levels it's a bit harder with the strong weapons because you still need to evoid really fast shots.

Playing Tyrian with the mouse (especially a quick optical mouse) will give you much better control over your ship (able to sneak powerups and points from between ships and dodging bullets/ships more easily).
When playing two player mode, make sure player one uses the mouse since he'll control both ships when linked.

---3--- Difficulty ---
Difficulty in Tyrian is a bit strange, since the toughness of the monsters is linear to the score (money) you have in the game (multiplied by difficulty factor) !
For instance, there is a level (read spoiler below) where you can gain infinite money, if you let it run an entire night and gain say 20.000.000 points, the monsters will get VERY tough! (even lightning/zica lasers cant kill some planes). So if you play this game carefully (killing only say 10% monsters) , it will get easier and easier, whereas if you play aggressively and kill everything (close to 90%) you gain lots of points and the game will get tough in the end. (And there's no way to LOOSE money/points after you gained it (when you've bought all you can))

You can get infinite cash by entering the 2nd secret level (Asteroids-B I think). When the screen stops and a little building in the middle of the screen shoots wiggly homing balls at you, stay to one side of the screen and hold down the fire button. Each ball you shoot will give you 250 points and they spawn at about 2-10 per second (depending on system speed and detail level). Warning! : read difficulty above.

I just started playing and reached the 2. episode (treachery). So I don´t know the zica laser, but I could already test the lightning cannon with powerlvl 7.
Well, I don´t see it that strong imho. Compared with other weapons theres a long time between the shots so it takes longer to kill an enemy. The ray itself is also quite slow and small so it´s difficult to hit a fast moving enemy (or more than one enemy). I don´t like this weapon and prefer the Proton.

From my experience playing, I like to match the Zica Laser up with a Sonic Cannon and Zica Flamethrowers. Makes for a nice mix of a fast rear gun and very powerful front gun and sidekicks. Though for the flamethrowers, you have to get point-blank to hit, so you can substitute for Atom Bombs if it's not your style. :bleh:

Turn the detail setting down to High as sugested earlier in this thread - it makes very little difference to the graphics but it runs much more smoothly; DOSBox can only emulate a fast 486 however good your PC is, so Tyrian's Pentium settings are a bit much for it.

Heh, for some reason I prefer the v1.1 Tyrian than v2.0 or any newer one.

This game is awesome!!! I remember I played this demo version when I was young! I was so crazy about it but then I lost the games CD and I was so p****d off then :tai: . I regreted that for a hell of a long time, but then my bro showed me this site and I downloaded this game and I was like ´´OMG!!!! NO THIS IS NOT TRUE!!! THIS IS TOO GOOD´´ and stuff like that. Actually the storyline is fun, at first it gets normal but then you just replay the game to collect all data cubes full of fun and humor. There are many smart jokes about games, like the Soundchair one, damn I laughed hard when I read it. Those two guys who made the game are no less than genius of game development. I still play this game from time to time to refresh old memories, besides it's very cool timekiller, but unfortuntely after playing a bit you get sucked into the game, it's so addictive!

:wallbash: what the other games of this genre do against this game. tyrian is uniqe in its own aspect as the whole upgrades with your hard earned points works out nicely. id have to say though the best combination is the carrot ship lightning gun lvl 10 sonic wave lvl 10 front protn side arm thingy and a miniship ( cnt remember which one) trust me instead of just switching guns maximize them to lvl 10 w(whene it comes to the lightning its worth it) in short this game is a god among space shooters :titan: :titan:

There was a random secret hint message ingame at the end of my latest Suicide run and I read it on several FAQ/Cheat websites.

I decreased my DosBox' Cycles to 2500 so my typings "arrive slower". I even created a macro on my keyboard that types the letters L, O, R and D in 10 milliseconds spaces - nothing worked so far.

Also, if I press more than 2 keys at once a pc speaker beep tells me that too many keys are used... :/

If you are using Dosbox' default settings: Sound Blaster 16, IRQ 7, DMA 1, Adress 220 h.
If there is no option for SB 16, try SB Pro 2 (or if that's not there either, "plain" SB Pro).

Ok, I am dumb. I know nothing about programming, I just want to play some old dos games. Now I downloaded Tyriana 2000, and there is no sound. Do I have to play it using dosbox? if so, please explain in a thorough and detailed walkthrough. If not, then do I use vdmsound? If so, it flat out won't load using it, says something about an error and click close to close. The only thing I can do is go to the Tyriana "setup" thing, and play with the options. In the options, no matter what I choose, the sound is disabled. For the music, the only thing that claims to work is something called "fm sound" which is supposed to support soundblaster and all that. But the only way I have sounblaster support is using vdmsound, and I can't run Tyriana's setup with vdmsound. Please help, and remember, I'm a true newbie. Thanks.

I like this game and raptor equally. :)

But my favorite combo is the lightning guns, rear sonic (which I have fire forward), and twin plasma sidekicks. But I also like to have some fun with the micro missle sidekicks too. Those things are funny to shoot off, zillions of little missiles pounding on everything on the entire screen is a hoot. :)

Oh yea, and I like either the freeze ray or the light of zilfen major power.

Ahh! One of the best games I've played....

You have to ways of playing this game:

1) Without reading the plot.
2) Reading the plot.

If you are lazy and use 1, you just see a very good space shooter with great graphics, sound and weapons. And you will leave it.

If you use 2....

You will be playing it FOREVER!!!

You'll get so involved that the levels will just be an excuse to read how the story continues...

I hope one day someone notice that this game could be a great movie or a new generation rpg game!!! with you playing as Trent through missions in all the planets, with the spirit of Zinglon around and Vikromod (project) at your back!!!

Tyrian was one of my favorites when I first played it in junior high. I had a demo copy, and I was crazy about it. For years I couldn't locate the game, though, as its title had given my mind the slip. I am so happy to be reintroduced to it! ...But it seems like I was a lot better at Tyrian as a 12-year old. <_<

Okay...I'm lost. I have DOSbox and tyrian 2000 set up on my PC, and the details are set to high, but the game runs at about half-speed with no sound. So...how do I even run tyrian through DOSbox (I'm kinda dumb...I know :unsure: ), and how do I get the sound back?

Run the game's setup and configure it accordingly. DOSBox' defaults are Sound Blaster 16, IRQ 7, DMA 1, Adress 220.

Furthermore:
1. Change Core to Dynamic in Dosbox.conf
2. Increase cycles.
3. Increase frameskip.
4. If that's still not enough, decrease the details.

hehe... had the 98 shareware version of this from some magazine cover CD...
me & my brother didn't touch the game ever *so* much (still had our old atari around with Xenon, etc), but did play hell out of Destruct. No mini-game has the right to be so fun as that. it's like a faster paced marriage of worms and gorrillas. or liero without so much blood or annoyance.

The game was awesome, I still play it on dosbox occaisionally. Part of what made this game interesting was the compelling storyline and the music to match. Always liked "Epic" games, they always seemed to draw the player into the game and entice them to continue to the end.

A long time ago,Tyrian was in demo-form and had it on my wish list until several years down the road.

This game is awe-inspiring! I used to play this with friends all the time... That was back in the day that the keyboard allowed more than 3 buttons to be pushed at once. Having one play with the mouse and player 2 with the keyboard makes it work though! The sheer onslaught of content makes this a keeper.

I really love this game, beats any SNES or Aracde games. The music is awesome,gfx and sounds are also good, the upgrade system was pretty unquie for the time, and theres a story.
Too bad at episode 4/5 the game gets stupid(shooting eyes, mouths,lips and fruits, ahh come on!!!!)

Tyrian 2000 is one of the best DOS-Shooters beside Stargunner. Better than Raptor or other games of this genre.

Run the game's setup and configure it accordingly. DOSBox' defaults are Sound Blaster 16, IRQ 7, DMA 1, Adress 220.

Furthermore:
1. Change Core to Dynamic in Dosbox.conf
2. Increase cycles.
3. Increase frameskip.
4. If that's still not enough, decrease the details.

Can you give anything more specific.. I can't get the sound to work under VDM-Sound ((hasn't stopped me from finishing the game a couple of times))

however I simply can NOT get stable speed using Dosbox.. no mater what I try the game randomly jumps between crippled snail and hyperdrive overload...:hairpull::hairpull:

You might want to set DOSBox to a single cycles value - the "max" setting can produce very uneven results, and not always for the better.

I agree with every one of the thing you said, even the stupidity of the lasts episode (but that doesn't mean that they aren't fun as all hel ;P). I love this game, even when I am not a shooter lover. But THIS game is awesome!

I still have no idea what you're talking about... I set the CPU Core setting to Dynamic in the config file, but it doesn't matter what combination of frameskip or cycles I use the speed is wildly unstable... perhaps if you where to give some specifics that didn't need a dosbox master to understand (IE don't assume that I know what the heck you're talking about, because chances are I DON'T) then I wouldn't be so damn confused...:(

Hi. I am a game addict, and find this game to be good.

After mauling and swearing my way through it on normal, I have started again on hard.

When I learned how to change direction of my rear gun (using enter) I found a new respect for some of the alternate weapons.

I still have to walk away from the game when it gets me all steamed up, but I always come back.

(I apologize for all of the run-on sentences... it just happens.)

Do you know what this is? There's a symbol of a white ship permanently in the upper left corner, and when the main gun doesnt fire for a few seconds it makes a swoosh and a flash of light which I haven't seen any use for.

You've picked up one of the specials. There are six types of them: Soul of Zinglon, Repulsor, Attractor, Flare, Pearl Wind and Ice Beam.
From your description, it sounds like the one you've found is Soul of Zinglon. The light beam will damage all enemies caught in it.

Yup, Zlingon rings a bell. I must have gotten it during the Zlingon Ale level at the end of ep1.
Now that I know, I can restart in order to avoid the annoying slowdowns caused by this (great, but unfortunately lagging) artifact. Thx!
