This is "old school" PC gaming for me. I remember it had a level editor and the character sprite animation was awesome.

This game is *dirty word* great. It's a kind of game that became "underground classic". Though and clean graphic, keyboard & mouse used, great combination. A full action game that make your nerves up. :sneaky:

Probably DOSBox.

Dosbox is a program that lets you play all these old DOS based games.
(You can find it in the menu to the left on the site - entitled Programs)

This game always used to rock, especially the bomb level editor! I installed it and ran it with dosbox but unfortunatly its being really really chunking in game and takes really long to load anything. I have a superb system here I dont see what the problem could be?

I discovered this game just a few months ago and I was completely gripped by it. I don't quite agree with the graphics becoming dull part of the review, but Abuse would be even better if it had more different type of monsters. But the sounds are superb, reminds me of the first time I played Doom: very atmospheric, oddly familiar. I'd give it a 4.5 if the option was available, so.. a 5. :ok:

There was an additional feature to this game, which put it ahead of its time. A good portion of it was written in LISP, and the baddies have learning ability. That's right, if you keep using a long range weapon, they'll try to mob you at close range, and if you use a close weapon they'll stand back and shoot. It takes them some time to learn, which gives you space to find a new weapon or technique. Also, there are destructible walls hiding secret sections.
Unfortunately, ABUSE was issued as 3D games were becoming popular, and ppl didn't give this side scroller the attention it deserved.
Did I mention that sometimes the bad guys hide behind the wall and burst out when you pass? You're only warning is the creepy chittering getting louder.

This game only got a 4 from the reviewers? An outrage! LOL. This is just one of the most action packed games that I've played, pure fun. You just get in and start shooting, and the constant stream of weapons and new level challenges make it addictive. Too bad it's short, I finished it pretty quickly, practically in one go LOL

Get it, anyone who enjoys a minimal amount of action should.

This game has it all, when i got to play it it made me feel like this :brain: it also has an easy to use level editor. you can edit the levels already on the game or, you can start from scratch. from a blank screen you design everything, from the way it looks to the way it sounds. the game mode is excellent but i spend most of my time creating my own levels, believe me when you start creating your own levels you wont want to stop. i give this game 9.5\10. this game "ROCKS"

Abuse has it all and made me feel like :brain: when i found the game. it has excellent gameplay
and a really cool level editor. the game its self is superb but the best feature in the game is the level editor, you can either edit the levels already on the game or, "and this is the best bit" you can actually creat your own levels from scratch. from the way it looks to the way it sounds. i rate Abuse 9.0/10 because you can have hours and hours of fun with both the game and editor.

a word of advise when uslng the level editor, its a good idea to toggle the light settings
to off as this makes it better and faster to controll. you will find the settings on the bottom of the screen in the middle

By using Mac OS X version of DosBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1) and appropriately modifying DosBox.conf (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=dosbox.conf).

Hello, before I present my problem i'd like to say that i've already read this entire board and the "troubleshooting" section of the forum. This is probably the only place I can get help.

I downloaded "Abuse" and everything appeared to be well, it got unzipped to C:/unzipped/abuse but when I went into the folder and clicked on the "Abuse" application my computer was completely locked up. I had to restart my computer with CTRL+ALT+DLTE, and after doing so, I tried to go to the "setup" application thinking that it would help...what I got was this:

[a bunch of code and stuff I can't understand]
Crash address (unrelocated) = 1: 000057A0

However, upon trying setup again...it worked. It seems I get this crash every other time I try to run it...i'm too afraid to run "Abuse" for fear of it crashing right now and me losing this post, but i'll just try it after I post this.

EDIT: Ah, sorry about that. I just got the game to work by clicking on the application...it seems a bit odd to me that it would crash like that though...if it does it again, i'll say something...

This game is hard!

Iowa, are you running it in Dos or Windows? What exact version?
If in Windows, are you using VDMSound or DOSBox?

Iowa
04-08-2006, 12:28 AM
Well, I didn't run it from straight DOS, but from Windows 98. I don't really know what VDMsound is, but I know that i'm certainly not using DOSbox, and my sound card is Soundblaster.

I'm glad that I got it to work, but I have no idea why it crashed that first time. And I appreciate your concern.

The Fifth Horseman
04-08-2006, 07:38 AM
Abuse is a primarily DOS-based game, so crashes may occur when trying to run it in Windows. However, as you have Win 98, you can reboot your computer into pure DOS mode and run the game from there.

These two topics should help a bit:
How to configure DOS for gaming (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=7302)
Win98 - Memory (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=4382)
Another option is to use Abandonia's bootdisk (http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=bootdisk).

Wow, cant believe theres still ppl out there playing this ^_^! and some that have only recently discovered it :-o

I remember getting a demo of this game from a mag cd in the mid 90s and insanely enough it included the editor!!! I was hooked... man the amount of time I spent making lvls hehe...

Well a decade on and I just went about downloading it! Without any messing about the game just worked (frabs)! However, I am having a slight problem trying to adjust the res :s (320x200 or whatever the default is looks pretty freaking awful on a 30'' widescreen >< LOL) the commands for changing it dont seem to work (-size xxxx yyyy), nor can I get it to work in a window...

Dont think they envisioned such machines a decade ago ;-) Perhaps I should be using some mod to run it? Im currently running it direct from XP. Any thoughts or feedback would be appreicated xD

This game is so much fun. In my mind, its the perfect platformer. It has good controls, fluid movement, fun weapons, good enemies. I know the source code was released in the late 90s, and I thought some people ported the game to run well in XP, has anyone else heard of this? It would be nice. Although it runs well for me in Dosbox or compatibility mode, it still would be nice to have an XP version on hand.

:ok: It appears that Abuse was put out by various companies. I found my cd it was made by Crack Dot Com(who may be the original maker of Abuse) and produced by Origins(before they merged with EA). Abuse came out in 1996 and ran under DOS and Win95. I ran my copy and it ran fine under XP. I brought this game back when it first came out, and however, I never loaded it up until today. I am so glad I still have all my old school games.

Anybody knows how to get the sound to work without dosbox? I've bought this game a very long time ago and played it alot since, yet I never heard the sounds. :sos:

Recently I tried using dosbox and the sound did work, but adjusting the CPU cycles and Frame skip gets so tiresome, so I stopped using dosbox for that game.

you could try using vdmsound. but abuse isnt realy much for cpu. i could run it fine with increased cycles, without any frameskip. and actually i think that in pure windows (at least here) it runs too fast

It was me who posted that last reply, I forgot to log in.

I just tried playing the game I have on a disk in a new computer I bought a week ago. It works heavenly on this one, sound, music, everything. The sounds and music do add lots of atmosphere the this game.
Seems like my last computer didn't support soundblaster, as well as VGA. :(
Thanks anyway.

I have a little question, I remember seeing a picture showing the character in a level where he walks on big golden cylinders, yet I don't remember ever seeing it, though I finished this game more then once.
Was there ever an extention for this game with more levels?

By the way, the version I own seem a bit diffrent from the one on this site. It's nothing really that diffrent but still. Only when I played my version the music worked, it allowed me to adjust the volume of both sound and music and instead of three bars in the brightness adjustment it had one grey one.
It's all really nonsense but if you like I can zip it and send it.

Abuse really is a cool game, I got hooked into it once when I was a kid, 'bout ten years ago

Funny thing, it's 2009 already and the game predicted things quite accurately with the science related stuff, gene, cloning, etc. Haha, the only thing is that there are no hi-tech guns and illegal facilities in real life.. Or is there?

I captured a short gameplay video of this game with dosbox but for some reason the video lacks the music although I could hear it while playing. I tried different dosbox versions with same results.

Is it just me or is this a common problem?

EDIT: Abuse uses HMI for music. HMI is an alternative (and incompatible) MIDI format and DOSBox's internal video capture doesn't record MIDI. You can record raw MIDI commands with DOSBox (Ctrl+Alt+F8), works also with Abuse.

DarthHelmet86

I think there is something about DOSBox were it does not record sound at all, but I can'r remember if that was just for people talking over it or for all sounds.

Sorry but PUSH!

Does anyone know where I can get the version with the real story line? This one just babbles something about ants in the beginning and thatīs it... in the other one youīre an inmate fighting mutants and there are more cutscenes when you finish levels, elaborating the story. This version doesnīt seem to have any story besides the beginning text.

I found a demo of the other version here:
http://www.acid-play.com/download/abuse/

€: Okay Iīve learned that this one has the original story line(with the A.N.T. aka Aggressive Non Terrestials), but the other one is still much more interesting I think.

€ē: Abuse 1.0 is the one with the Ant story and abuse 2.0 is the one with the inmate story. Iīve found 2.0 but it doesnīt seem to be for dosbox but windows and I canīt get it to run under Vista. Okay I guess the story isnīt *that* important ;)

Abuse in 1280x1024 resolution

You can almost see the entire level on the screen at once. The game was meant to be played at 320x200 resolution but if you want to cheat you can use higher resolutions (helps finding secret areas, enemies can't really sneak attack you, ...).

You can select different resolutions with the -size parameter although my version of the game (2.00) can use other resolutions only in the edit mode:
abuse.exe -edit -size xres yres

Interesting, thanks for sharing this! :D

DOS games have so many "hidden" stuff that can be activated only via undocumented (or overlooked) command line parameters...

Well, I can't seem to get this one going either.

All it says is "unable to open cache file for compiled code. Please delete all your files named lcachexx.tmp and make sure you have written permission to directory (c:/)"

I heard about this being a well known error from years back, but the solutions given online are utterly cryptic and I can't make heads or tails of it at all.

Figured out that it just had to be in C.
