Never found anything interesting in this game (played only first part on Amiga, but did not like it, and it was not a half of experience of Indy4 or Simon 1 which one I loved at the time). But have to give a credit for quite nice graphics.

it's really funny... the dialogue is very light, and Zanthia's a really cool chick! i haven't played this game in like, 8 years, but i'm looking forward to playing it again!
i just finished downloading this game from the site about a few minutes ago... but there seems to be a problem... the game won't run! after i click "start a new game" the program ends! help anyone!!! :help:

I find this game works perfectly with VDMSound, no DOSBox required. That makes it much easier. I didn't even need to use any compatibility settings.

Thanks, Feminista.
Compatibility has changed, and VDMSound has been added :ok:

:ok: i truly believe that this one of the greatest adventure game of that golden period of the early 90´s, along with Day of the Tentacle and the 2 Indy´s. Even know that im not a kid at all (ok,... allright im old, and i will not tell my age); is still fun to play those games even if everybody´s inquirin that ur actin like a child.

Good review, this game is definately one of my favorites of all time. All the Kyrandia games are great, but this one is the best of the series! Many memorable lines :)

:D :Brain:
I agree, this is equal to Kyrandia 1 and even better in many
ways, the visuals get better and better and the exotic and
truly original ideas of the settings and puzzles are realy
great :ok:
And there are some really good tone setting scenes and
themes in this one. The version of the game with the speech
files on CD is quite large, over 100 MB I believe, I have asked
humbly to see if we can get it up on the site, but really, it is
such a joy to have all these wonderful games for us all, I
feel we are very lucky and blessed as it is. I have heard
that the Zanthia voice is really nice.

I once buyed that game, CD-Version. It was a release in a white package, with the big "V" of Virgin on it ( think it stands for Virgin ). Anyways, I can't find the game anywhere, but I can tell you that it was really nice listening to the dialoges, listening to Xanthia talk, or screaming ( mostly when she dies ^^ ) ... I really had to laugh often, for example when you use the feather with the crocodile, the babymusic begins to play and then you could hear how the crocodile is whining :D

:king: :bye:
The game versions posted here are great, and have both the
music and the sound effects. The Full game versions with all the
speech files are very large, Kyrandia 2 Hand of Fate is over 100 MB
I think so it would be a BIG download.
The Manual IS available for K 2, and some nice music files for K 1,
and the complete K 3 is now up so we are very fortunate here. :w00t:

timie getting the sound to work on K I, and K II until I realized I had
my own computer set up wrong....

:bye: Hey there. I do believe the speech option is not available on this version of the game. I recall seeing on the troubleshooting post that you need the cd-version (the original game) to get speech. I myself have the original cd-version but still cant manage to get speech to it. Anyone got some advice?

All the recipes in her book are able to be created, at one or another point in the game. ALL. One of them, something with party, but not the snowman, is the last one, the recipes for it are available in the rainbow house at the very near end of the game. Actually, you'll have to mix all recipes except this party one to finish the game, so don't say you can't mix them. Then they wouldn't stand in the book. ;)

IIRC, _that_ one is not used in the rainbow machine.

No, it's not used there. But you can mix ALL recipes with components from it. Just try if you're interested, you'll see. There are all components available in the game in that machine, and even some that only are availabe there and nowhere else. ;)

But I just can't find the Eye of Newt, not even in that rainbow house. Also, you don't need it to make progress in the game... so why is it in her book anyway?
Gamefreak

If remember correctly, the Eye of Newt is a small metal orb. But I'm not that sure anymore, just that there are components for all recipes available in the game. But you need to keep one thing in mind - don't take the names of the components for the recipes as what they are, think flexible. ;)

Hehe, yeah that's true. It's really funny! ^_^
This game has nice graphics and sound, and a lot of funny situations, but i found its puzzles very difficult and illogical, even matching those of Discworld, so i was unable of finishing it without a walkthrough. Maybe i'm getting dumb as I grow up, as I was able of finishing almost every Lucasfilm game without help about ten years ago
Gamefreak

Well, I had no problems going through the game whatsoever, aside from being stuck for 6 months at the part where the rat is hindering the passage and the boat of this drunken fat ugly fairy is your way out. I couldn't continue until I discovered that the recipes in the book are not what they're written to be. Well, it was my first game and I was young back then yet

Actually I'd say the puzzles of Hand of Fate make a lot more sense than those in some LucasArts games (Zak McKracken, for example was perfectly horrid in that respect).
Sebatianos
17-10-2005, 06:44 PM
Nah, Zak was excelent.
Tear up the wallpaper to get the cash-card from under the drawer, buy a golf-club and hit the bus with it, so you can get to the airport and fly to Zimbabwe, where you give the club to a shaman in order to learn a ritual dance to open the huge statue on the Mars. What's not logical about that?
I think it's these sort of puzzles that make games like this much more interesting, because no matter how random they seem, you can always get an idea what you should do (like Kyrandia 3 - where you need to put a dead fish in the hood of the mime, so he'd go and take a shower).
A. J. Raffles
17-10-2005, 07:13 PM
Oh, come on, Zak was just plain weird: what's so logical about killing a squirrel with a bread?

I liked most the place in Hand of Fate where you are in the snow mountains and need sugar for one recipe. For that you need to take a candy away from the baby, after which he starts to cry, and Zantia says "What a sucker." :D

You don't have to, but you can. Just as there are other ways of stopping that bus.
Anyway, I remember finding Hand of Fate very easy actually. The idea of Xanthia changing her outfit all the time was hilarious, but I simply hated that you kept losing your inventory. What did I have to collect all that junk for if it's going to be gone the next moment anyway? :ranting:
Gamefreak
18-10-2005, 07:07 PM
All the stuff you have is actually almost always only for recipes in the current part of the game or for the puzzles. So if you wouldn't lose it, what would you need it for later yet?. ;)
You retain the most important things anyway, like the alchemist's magnet. And Mr. Stick is always found again, anyway :D

>_> ohh yeah, I forgot, ok then, I'll just search through my stuff till I find my disc, it's annoying though, I don't want to buy it again but it looks like I might have to.
Good news! I was looking throw the cases to check and there was one that doesnt belong to me (it's my sisters'/parents') and low and behold! it was there, I'm going to try and play it, I'll let you know if something doesn't work right.
gah, ok I'm ok without sound but what happens is it trys to load and asks me to abort/retry/fail and all but fail will close it immidiately, if I attempt 'fail' however, it says it cannot find one of the fonts and I should reinstall, perhaps a different machine would be appropriate, I'll try it on the other ones but I think the only one it will work on is the 98 laptop

Simply download DosBox from here and play the game in it ;)
thanks I got it to work anyway (it wanted the cd in the dvd drive -_-) but can you tell me if dosbox will help with the sound at all? only I'd like it if it had sound.
Gamefreak
13-02-2006, 04:01 PM
With DosBox you should have sound and music, either FM one (Soundblaster) or MIDI one (Roland LAPC-10, Roland Sound Canvas, General MIDI etc.). Midi is in most games better than FM one. Anything is of course emulated, so there won't be problems with too low memory or hardware problems...well, mostly. Some games are more difficult to run in DosBox than the rest, but with Hand of Fate there're no problems.
You should really try DosBox out. But keep in mind that it needs a fast PC to emulate smoothly.
I don't don't hear spoken dialogs, and remember they where spoken. Is this a version problem, or my memory being wrong ??

It's kinda like a 'Simon Says' game.
Touch any bug to start with. The bug you touched will flash, then another bug will flash. This other bug is the 'starting' bug.
Touch the 'starting' bug. That will flash, then another bug will flash. Touch the 'starting' bug, then the next bug.
If you did it right, those 2 bugs will flash again, and another bug will flash. Touch those 3 bugs in order.
Then another one will be added, etc. You may want to take note of the order they flash in.
Eventually all the bugs will flash, and then sing you a chorus. I think they give you something as well.
I hope this makes sense to you. :ok:

you cant use the trance potion...the reason it is in zanthia's book is because it was on the floor alone with an orange peel and a wrapper with a flask...they are the leftovers of the ingredients used to put 3 of the dudes in a trance....the page is just to show you that some1 has used that potion :bleh:

I did it, I finally did it! :brain:
apparently all I had to do was add a line in the autoexec.bat file that wasn't even in the instalation directory, but on the third kyrandia cd (malcolm's revenge). Strange, buuut.. I did it ^^ Thank you anyway, I appreciate it a lot ^_^

For the sake of record, what was that line?
Guest
06-09-2006, 02:46 PM
Of course, it says it all in the Readme file, but heck, who's stupid enough to actually read it? :wallbash:
<blockquote> If you are using a Sound Blaster compatible sound card and are not hearing
digitized speech or sounds, make sure your AUTOEXEC.BAT file contains the
following line...
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T1
...where A### is the address of your card (220 or 240),
I# is the interrupt (5, 7, 10), D# is the DMA
channel (1 or 3), and always T1.
Please consult your sound card manual with any options regarding emulation
of the Sound Blaster. Make sure to reboot your computer after making any
changes to AUTOEXEC.BAT, so that this setting will take effect.
Also, if you have run MEMMAKER from DOS 6.2, a HIGHSCAN option may have
been added to the EMM386 command line in your CONFIG.SYS file. If you
experience problems, you should try removing the HIGHSCAN option.</blockquote>

Hello! I wanted to complete a sort of "optional part" of that game wich isn't in the walkthrough but I can't go out! Here it is: I'm in the town, I woke up the scheriff and entered the fish-like house.
Marko was in the prison, I tried to open the door with the key, but the scheriff locked me in; I tried to get the key back with the magnet, but the scheriff gave it to a fish, and now I'm stuck in jail with Marko (and I SAVED, what a .:%à§!). Someone knows how to escape? I think it's possible because Zanthia doesn't die...
Guest
16-09-2006, 07:54 AM
Hi!
You have to click on the old cover in Zanthias cell. After the third click Zanthia will create a rope out of it and Marko gives you a hook which together make a fishhook. Use the fishhook on the window and Zanthia will get the fish with the key. That´s it. The sheriff won´t come back. I love this part. ;)
Btw, you can also use the fishhook when the key is still on the wall, if you happen to have no magnet!

Well, now I'm in the ship, I saved at the beginning of the trip, and I have been to the cannibals island just to see how it is... Now I load my game, and I can't do a single thing on the ship because the sailor says we're arrived at mustard island! I have no time to move! Can I leave if I wait some time or do something in the screen with the "kon-tiki's evil twin" statue? Don't tell me I have to restart a game! :wallbash:

Actually I found a way to escape, but I don't know if it works with other items: when Zanthia is in the cauldron, select a sandwich (if you have one, of course that was my case...) and give it to the chief of cannibals... While he's eating, you escape and the ship returns to the previous town... I tried to give him some lettuce and raddish, but it did'nt work... So if you're stuck, think of the sandwitch!

About that Mustard Island thingy...
If you just stay on the boat long enough, it'll take you back. You have to wait for like 3 minutes or something, but it'll leave again :)
Wouldn't make much sense if the boat would just stay there and never leave again, now would it? ;)

They play a sequence of colors. The same sequence will be important in two places in the game (you'll know when you'll be there).
And don't ask what the sequence is - it changes with every new game.

You can feed a blueberry to one of the bugs and they'll quickly play the entire sequence for you through.
If you're quick enough you can note it. If not, click on any one bug and it leads you to a starting bug. Click on the starting bug which will play, and after it plays the next on the row. Follow clicking the same row each time, with always a new bug in the row. When you clicked on them all in the right order, they'll play a small "concert" for you (nothing for the bright masses :P). That will be then the right sequence, and be sure to note it, as said above you'll need it later in the game again.

Read the FAQ's. You should find an answer there. (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=5741)
You might also want to try looking through the entire Troubleshooting Archive (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showforum=25).

So I actually own a HoF CD. I made a HoF folder under the CDrive folder. But unfortunately, the very thorough walk-through for using DOSBox only seems to apply to programs one downloads off the internet.
Any idea on how I can use it to run the programs off the CD? Every time I try to use it to run one of them, it says:
A CD-ROM device driver is required to run Hand of Fate CD.

What version of windows (or other) are you using, and is it a CD from the original time of the game release? If you're running on a recent version of windows (more recent than the game CD) you may have to change the "compatability" options....
Other than that, I will stand aside for a much more technically minded forumite to help you - hope you get to play soon :)
(by the way, you can still play CD's through dosbox - you just have to mount the correct drive.)

You did it the wrong way. Either you run the game from your original CD (by mounting your CD-ROM drive in DosBox) or make an ISO image and mount it with IMGMOUNT command. Both are explained here (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=Internal+Programs).

I just wonder WHY they don't make games like this anymore. The Kyandia series along ith King'sQuest and Quest for glory or Dragonsphere or Fable (aside for the the utterly indigestible last part) are wonderful fantasy adventures with a soul to them -great graphics, good storyline and great entertinament for long hours. What I like about Kyrandia is its endless humour too.
I haven;t played the Kyrandia games in more than a few years and I think Ill go have a stab it again. Hands of Fate is someho my favourite part, albeit I can't deny the interesting concept in Kyrandia 3.
Hi guys, okay so i have the original of this game on CD. However, despite all my efforts i CANNOT get the sound to work. Whenever I try and load the game in DOSbox, it tells me that a CD driver is required to play [yes the CD is inserted] & I have tried all the settings but the sound refuses to play, instead I get a weird and glitchy noise. Also, I found the autoexec.bat file, but when i load it it comes up in a DOS window for a fraction of a second and disappears, how am I supposed to edit it?
Help is very much appreciated!!

Did you MOUNT the CD-ROM drive properly?
Please list the commands you've enetered (exact syntax, please).
Also, the default configuration for DosBox sound emulation is Sound Blaster 16 (if that's not present, substitute PRO or just "plain" Sound Blaster), IRQ 7, DMA 1, Adress 220.
Finally... what the heck do you want to edit your Autoexec.bat for ?!?

If I remember correctly, you have not to use the mushroom that you'll find early (that one is for nothing good) but the stool that you can pick up at Herb's hut. All other ingredients are actually easy to find out - the yellow sulfur stone, crocodile's tears (tickle him with the blue feather, or give him an onion) picked up with an empty flask, an onion, the twisting root I think, whatever more there was yet.
Important - don't forget to add hot water (fill a flask in the screen with sulfur rock and hot waters) after all other ingredients. Only then the potion will be complete. I often made the same mistake, forgot to add hot water.

Where you put it in?
Of course in the cauldron on the right side, beside the inventory shelves. Don't say you didn't find that one yet. If you didn't, you find it at the place with the crocodile, in the tree hole. Can't miss it :ok:
Edit: I see you've found it. Well, if you try to put items in the cauldron that are critical to a plot, that's where Zantia says I don't want to lose that. That should tell you that you're putting a wrong thing in it.

The cauldron and spellbook randomly alternate between two or three locations (don't remember exactly), so don't expect to find them in the same place every time you start a new game.

Every firefly glows with a certain color when it makes sound. Those colors correspond to the sounds.
Scatty
15-05-2007, 04:13 PM
I think sound is not necessarily needed. When you click on a bug, you see it flashing and after it another bug flashes. Note the order, and follow it, press each time the last flashed bug. With every new bug correctly pressed in order, the order gets longer. When you click on all the bugs in correct order, they play a song which you won't hear though, but you'll see them performing... kind of :D
Anyway, note this order and use it then in the same order on the teeth. When you click on one tooth, you see it's color. The rest should be easy to figure out.
Thanks a lot.i registerd just now,waw..

Just press each new bug which flashes additionally after you press the first bug. When you press that additional bug, the first and the second will flash, after which yet another one, which will require you to follow the entire order from the first bug on. Dang, how to explain better... Watch the bugs closely.

16-05-2007, 12:11 PM
Well, did you try to click on that LAST bug, the neon one? Noticed how, after you click on it, another bug lights up? Here's where it begins.
Click on that another bug. After you do, it lights up again, and after it yet another one. Repeat that, click on both of them. After you do, they both light up again, and after them a third one. Repeat that too, and in exactly the same order. Click that way on more and more bugs in the same order they show you. When you click on the last bug, they perform (flash all in their color randomly). Notice that order. Now you can use it on the mega-skull, and in one or two occasions later in the game again.
If that didn't help you, I call myself helpless :)
The Fifth Horseman
16-05-2007, 12:43 PM
can anyone tell me ,wich touth i have to click??[/b]The combinations change at random with every new game. It would be pointless to give you one, since it wouldn't work anyway.
1. Every bug makes a sound AND flashes in a certain color.
2. The entire sequence plays when you feed the bugs with a berry.
3. The colors are the solution to the skull puzzle.
4. Every tooth on the skull makes a sound AND flashes in a certain color. Those sounds and colors are the same as the bugs.
5. Click the teeth of the skull in the same order of colors as the bugs played.
Remember to write down the sequence - it will be used again a little later into the game.
Scattyyyyy, you are not helpless, its meeee...
I will try again and agai till i get the idea..Thanks a lot

Click on a bug - any bug.
You will see one of the bugs light up.
Click on the bug that lit up.
That bug will light up again, followed by another bug lighting up.
Click on the first bug that lit, then the second bug that light.
Those 2 bugs will light up again, followed by a third bug.
Click on those 3 bugs.....
Keep doing this until all the bugs flashing.
Make sure you take a note of which order the bugs light up in.

I've heard that there's a letter addressed to Scotia (from Lands of Lore 1) somewhere in the game. Does anyone happen to know what the letter reads?
The Fifth Horseman
17-09-2007, 08:34 AM
Yes, there is such a letter.
No, I don't remember what it reads, apart that it mentions Mask of Eternity.
I can tell you how to read it, though: you need to start a new game and play through the first location until you need to find the missing letters.
When you find them, don't give them to the dragon right away, but go to the hot springs (or whatever the location with lots of steam is called - you get there past quicksands and the crocodile, IIRC)

Thank you for your interest in the Nether Mask. We believe the ancient temple which contains this artifact lies buried in the region currently occupied by the Urbish Mine Company. Hi all, new member here. I am stuck at the Rainbow Room. I healed the Rainbow plant, and got the icicle off the corner of the roof. The problem is, no matter where I click the icicle, I can't get it to stick in the roof so I can climb the house. It just keeps falling to the ground. I'm so frustrated I could scream. My 9 year old daughter tried for 10 minutes, and even my husband gave it a few tries before he finally said "Screw this." LOL! Does anyone have any pointers for this?

29-12-2007, 01:13 PM
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! Unfortunately, I am unable to obtain two. There is only one place from which to break an icicle, which is the rear right corner of the house roof. If you go back in the house, a new icicle grows, but only if you take the previous icicle into the house with you. The problem with this is, nothing can leave the house other than the alchemist's magnet. That is to say, if you take the icicle into the house, you come out without it, thus leaving you again with only one icicle.
(sigh) I'll keep trying. Thank you guys again for your suggestions.

I remember watching my mum and her friend playing this a loooooooooooooooooooooooong time ago... I only remembered two scenes from it...
Then, one fateful day, I was browsing E-bay for just any random old adventure games...
I found The Legend of Kyrandia...it interested me, so I bought it...
I found out it had a sequel, so I checked it out...
Lo and behold, right there on the box was a screenshot of one of the scenes I remembered!!! Needless to say, I prompty bought it (though I had to go through about 4 boxes before I got a copy that didn't have any corrupted disks...but it was worth it.)

The great thing for me about the Kyrandia series is the music. Westwood always did a good job with that. When I was in film school in the mid 90s, I recorded the track that plays when Zanthia arrives in the snowy mountains. It was a great synthpop track that I used for one of my short film projects. I also recorded music from the first game for use in video projects in high school before that. Great tunes.

You can always find the used up in the cauldron "reagents" again. There's no running out of them, ever, so you don't get stuck in the game without the possibility to progress. You can get another lucky horseshoe in the place where you found the first one(s) :)

Never played this when it came out but downloaded the CD version a while back. Impressed how good it was.
The game is pretty good puzzle wise and the speech on the CD version really adds to the game I think. The voice for Xanthia and the subtle humor is pretty good.
Definitely recommend for any adventure game fans. Not quite in the Lucasfilm league but a solid point and click adventure!

I am trying to mount the cd rom driver, and have input the following into dos box, as instructed on the download page:

D-Fend is nothing but a frontend - a piece of extra software that "helps" managing the software that does the real work (ie DOSBox). As you may have noticed, sometimes these things do more harm than good; in my personal opinion they're useless for anyone but new users (and it's better for them to learn to use DOSBox without a frontend... eventually they have to anyhow).
Get your copy from the official site: http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1

OK. I did that. It doesn't give me that message anymore. :) Now the problem seems to be that I don't have the CD image. I went to the ISO cellar and clicked on the link for this game, which took me to 7 different files. I downloaded them all, and dropped them into dosbox, but it's still not working. When I enter mount d: c:/hofcd/cd -t cdrom -label MIKES, as per instructions, it says, "Directory c:/hofcd/cd doesn't exist". I'm about ready to give up. :(

You may have noticed the archive you downloaded from Abandonia contained a directory named hofcd and a directory named cd inside that.
The instructions assume that you have unpacked it to the root of the real C drive on your machine.
You're getting the error because you instructed DOSBox to mount a directory that does not actually exist where you instructed it to check. Kind of like what you'd get if you tried searching for patient records under incorrect name.
The big question is where did you unpack the archive contents? You need the full path of that directory to use instead of just c:/ in the MOUNT commands. When you have that, you're done and can play the game. :)

Right-click the folder, choose "Properties" and check what it shows under location.
Let's say my Downloads folder has location of C:\Documents and Settings\Adam\Pulpit .
Instead of C:\ in the MOUNT command, I'd use C:\Documents and Settings\Adam\Pulpit\Downloads . Since that contains spaces, I have to enclose it in quotes to work right, leading to this:
mount d: "C:\Documents and Settings\Adam\Pulpit\Downloads\hofcd\cd" -t cdrom -label MIKES

Oh, my God! It's working! I can't tell you how many hours I've spent trying different things and researching. Thank you so much for your help and patience.
I must say, the instructions on how to play a game that requires a CD ROM aren't very thorough. Your instructions made it very simple. I also realized that part of the problem was that the folder containing the CD info was a folder inside a folder, so DosBox wasn't able to find it. Once I used the actual folder, plus your handy dandy information, it worked fine. :smugulon:

We'll have to replace that archive sooner or later. I have a solution that can get DOSBox to mount the subdirectory automatically, but it needs adding there together with a short batch file.

Hi! I have two questions about this game.
* Is a RIP?
* Include the Spanish version?
Thank you!

I mounted everything and when I typed hofcd.exe to start the game, the command does nothing.
Any hint ? :/

To be more precise:
I used:
mount d: c:/hofcd/cd -t cdrom -label MIKES
then I used:
mount c: c:/hofcd/
Finally I typed
c:
Then I hit:
hofcd.exe, push enter and I get either a blank or Illegal command

I am on Chapter 2. I need to make the MUSTARD.
I have the ground grain and I can't mix it with vinegar to make the mustard.
Is this a bug? When I try to mix them up, I pick up the ground grain and drop the vinegar.
HELP??

It's not a bug. Ground grain is not used in the mustard recipe, ground radish is.

I liked the first game more. The sequel had good points, but also bad points as well.
You play as Zanthia, the sorceress who appeared in the prequel. She is beautiful, but she has a very sharp tongue. I remember she described the “roof” (hut) being similar to her colleague’s hair (witch Brynn or something).
One curious thing is that when you use the magic wand on people, they reveal their inner emotions (or do they reveal their true emotions?). When I clicked the wand on Zanthia’s clumsy boyfriend, he said things he would not say... :mischief:
I found the puzzles a bit difficult and dull. I remember I got stuck in the game but with the Walkthrough I managed to get almost to the end. The final puzzle left me disgusted, as the goal of the game is fun and non-Mathematical Probabilities and Combinatorial Analysis. Well, my brother made it to the end and I saw the end of the game. :palm: :picard:
Oh, and not to mention the origin of the Hand of Fate and the Feet, etc. It was a rather uncreative and lame story. :headslap:
