Well, I finished a review and can't make screenshots. The game won't work in DosBox - not enough extended memory (How can that be fixed Data - you're saying you're an expert).
Tried Hyper Snap as well, but it keeps throwing the game out with only blank shoots.
The game can only run in WinXP, although it's old - and it can only run in fool screen mode, otherwise it shuts down!

Edit dosbox.conf and look for a line [dosbox] and under it you should see this line - memsize=64. Just raise the number if 64 MB is not enough. ;)

Did that, but then it said I needed 2.5M convetional mem - only have 614k
Anyway I just downloaded some pictures about the game, that will have to do, unless I can get DosBox running!

What? :eeeeeh:
There never existed 2.5 MB conventional memory, 640 is max...

I know, I had the same problem years ago with the original, but it worked after I used memmaker. Can something like this be done in dosbox?

He was in fact only making fun of NASA, because at the time they still used 126k computers in Space Shutlles and said it's enough!

I have nothing to paste.
Does it save the file in a temp folder or something and I have to look for it?

OK, never mind GOT THE GAME WORKING IN DOS-BOX!!! :ok:
Thanks all anyway!

Care to share what happened anyway?

Sebatianos
14-11-2004, 07:24 AM
So far it's like this:
1. The game runs OK in WinXP - but no sound (and I don't know why, but I can't make screenshots with 'print screen' - I guess my print screen doesn't work).
2. The game didn't run in DosBox because of the memory error - but infact the problem was in the settign of the game (so I changed its *.cfg and *.bat file). Now the game starts running in DosBox, but when I press a key - any key it just chrashes and closes itself down.!!!
3. VDMSound doesn't even run the game, it still says, there's not enough memory.

The main problem are the screenshots, which we need if we want to give the game on our site (so far I was only able to make 2 - of the intro).

So, that's what happened - is still going on!

It's 7 cities of Gold - the review and the manual are ready and the game is in my folder. If you'd care to help I'll be glad to PM you the link!

7 Cities of Gold? On that one I can say already that it needs a higher Pentium 1 to run fast enough, from Pentium 100 on. Well, PM me then an let's find the details out. ;)

Well I have a celleron equivalent of Pentium 4, so I don't think that's it.
Got the game?

In DosBox Celeron is little too weak. P4 2.4 - up to Pentium 75, I think.
Yep, got the game. Let's see...

Wow, I give up! :eeeeeh:  :wall: :wall:
I have no idea why the game crashes, but it seems to get some "protection fault" upon hitting about any key when it runs...

Download Infranview (http://news.swzone.it/swznews-9938.php)
It should accept the screens from the "print screen" button

Sebatianos
14-11-2004, 02:23 PM
OK, you mean just the key print screen (it's above the insert key) and then go to paint or Irfan and paste?
There's nothing to paste?!?!

mouse31e
14-11-2004, 03:52 PM
Open Irfanview.

Press C which should open the capture/screenshot window (or go Options>Capture/Screenshot)

Select foreground window and then open the game. When you want to take the screenshot press Ctrl-F11 and Irfanview should open up with the screenshot in it's viewer like so.

http://uk.geocities.com/mouse31e/screenshot1.jpg
(Hmmm... A screenshot of Irfanview taking a screenshot.)

You can then make it the size you want using Image>Resize/Resample and save it.

It will not work with DosBox because DosBox overides the hotkey with it's own Ctrl-F11.

Should work with anything in Windows XP though.

If you get problems, for example colours don't come out right, try again but with Whole Screen selected instead of Foreground Window!

Hope this helps! :D

I've actually given up all hopes, but thanks for the effort, I'll let you know as soon as I try it! :ok:
EDIT:
:wall: :wall: :wall:
Seems to work, but the only thing I get is a black screen with the position of my pointer.
I give up - for a few hours.

Actually, there's still a need to get this game to run in DosBox, because if it crashes all the time, it won't be that userfriendly. Playing without sound and music in Windows XP isn't that cool...

I managed to get it running with VDM sound :Brain:

Just turn off everything under protected mode in compatibility tab and it works like a dream! Also, for sound, you need to add -a argument in run....

Then again, why am I writing all this, I'll just include the VDM config file ;)
Copy it into 7 cities of gold directory and start the game with it! Btw, change the directories before you do! (right click -> properties)

Data,
do you know when is the next release of DOSBox due?

What kind of improvements (except game compartibility) we will see?

That is why I gave him his title ;)

The new release of DOSBox will arrive very shortly.
(The main creator tried to tell me some of the improvements, but I wasn't a good enough tech wiz to understand him. Maybe Data knows too, and can tell you all).

according to the dosbox forum it can be any minute.

They seem to aim to fix a lot of bugs that were reported with 0.62

here (http://pcnwstage.phys.rug.nl/dosboxcvs.txt) you can check all changes since 0.62
Becareful the authors don't comment in a way that everybody understands it.

Thanks!

It does not seems that complicated (list) as I did couple of C++ classes, and now I'm taking class that should be another level of C++.

I wonder if they are planning to implement direct mount of ISO from the DOSBox.

Sorry to bring up a old thread but this game has been killing me trying to get it to run. Im using DOSBox 0.63 and I finally got the color and sound right but the thing randomly crashes all the time. :wall:

So I came across this thread and tried running it in XP and it does indeed work without crashing but no sound of course. I downloaded VDM sound but when I right click on the 7cog app and try to start in vdm sound i get " You require 17312 more bytes of conventional memory to play"

Im really lost I dont even know where the compatibility tab is to turn off everything under protected mode like you said. I also have no clue how you copy the VDM config file you provided into the 7cog directory

Can anyone explain what i need to do at a novice level :help:
