What system do you emulate, what's your favorite emulator and how do you organize your roms?

Also, this would be a place to ask for help (no roms) if you have any problem with emulator.

Here is my favorite emulators, WinUAE :)

My favourite is Virtual Boy Advance, for Gameboy Advance (and therefore all previsous ones. I start off with nicely organised collection of ROMs but as to play them you need to drag them onto the Virtual Boy icon they end up in the Virtual Boy's folder, also, it saves to the same folder so I end up with lots of empty game folders and one big folder full of games, saves and emulator files. :(

I emulate anything I feel like at the moment. Been emulating SMS, Genesis, Nes, Snes, GB/GBC, GBA, PSX, Game Gear and Amiga.

Btw... is there a way to convert Amiga games to PC?

Would be nice if there is one. Kon-Tiki finally managed to find War Wizard full version, but for Amiga only. :ok:

In the Visual Boy Advance (latest version 1.7.2) go to options >> emulators >> directories and set folders for each option (screen shot, battery file...) to what do you like them to be. This will separate battery files, saves and stuff from roms.

Download GBA Renamer (http://www.gba-renamer.com/), update it, select folder for incomming roms and where your good archive will be, and run it. It will recognize all your roms and name them properly.

Download GBA Front (http://www.ideiadupla.com/gbafront/), install it and in options set game folders to your archive. GBAFront is great front end for game boy able to download game screen shoots and title screens from the internet. In options also select your VBA file, so you'll be able to run games by double click in GBAFront.

Here is couple screen shots of GBAFront

Hope this will help you organize your GBA collection.

Can't ask for the new roms.

Linking to the sites with GBA roms can get this web site in to problems! (and we don't like to do that ;))

Did I just miss it, or you old game fans really don't use any C64 emulators?
There are sites with tens of tousends games for C64!!!
Best emulator is Frodo, but there are other cool one.
There's even a MS-DOS 1.2 emulator for Commodore 64, so you can run your MS-DOS emulator inside a C64 emulator (completely crashing your system if you try to get exces of your HD) :bleh:

You kidding, right? :roflol:

Best C64 emulator (and most accurate, with most C64 pherieptials emulated) is WinVice (http://www.viceteam.org/).

I do play couple old C64 games like Turrican from time to time...

I have SNES, Genesis and NES, but they've already been mentioned. I also have MAME, which emulates arcade games (I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet!) It emulates Neo Geo games as well, I believe.

My favorite emulated games are probably the Metal Slug series. King of Fighters 2000, Gunstar Heroes and the Castlevania series are also good.

NeoRage emulates NeoGeo games much better then Mame, and with less resource. I used to play most of NeoGeo games on 450MHz machine at the full speed without any problems.

Mame is great project, and there are a lot of improvements. I play some of first arcade games I played like a kid (spend most of my lunch money on the arcade :D ). CrazyKong, Scramble, Phoenix, MoonPatrol...

I love to emulate computers like C64 and Mac. I know most things about Mac emulation so if you need help I might be able to help yea. I also emulate the SNES and GBA.

It works fine on Win98 and 2000, and for XP ypou need to get a path (available on the network). The reason why it works faster is because is about 80% made in assembly and 20% in C++ and emulates only one system.

On my laptop I've got Caprice32 for Amstrad games and Gens for Genesis. Also got NESticle for old Nintendo games on my tabletop. Used to have some C64 emulator, but since I never had a Commodore I never got very interested in it. Tried MAME, but I couldn't find any really good games for it, so I gave up.

Years and years ago used to emulate Spectrum Z80 with EmuZ80, but then it got commercial and I didn't feel like registering the thing, and at the time there were no good free alternatives. Had lots of fun with it, though.

With Caprice on the laptop I finally have what I always wanted: a portable Amstrad with an endless supply of games (got like 1300 of them). :) A perfect companion in trains, makes the normally frustratingly long trips feel much shorter.

About this Visual Boy. All I do is download the zip files put them in a folder, dont extract them, open Visual Boy, go to file, open rom, and select one from the folder, that's it. Is this other way that you talk of Anubis better?

and sNes emulation (zsnes)

It will be no different in game play, but it makes much easier to organize collection of roms, search for game, see the screen shot, get information about game (battery save, size of games) so this is usefull if you are using flash card.

So all you have to have is one shortcut and all of games will be nicely organized, ready to play by double click of mouse. :)

There are also other front ends, but this one worked best for me.

Caprice32 is best Amstrad emu. Very easy to use, only problem I had is to get started with games, as I never owned Amstard.

If you interested in ZXSpectrum, there is 30 day trial version of nice emulator Spectaculator (http://www.spectaculator.com/). I am still using latest version before they got comercial, and all of the games I tried worked.

Mame is great arcade emu, and it might be a bit to hard to find roms after mame.dk was closed.

Took some time find a free Spectruum emulator for Windows, and EmuZWin seems to work ok. It even has this nifty Map Builder option, which should become mandatory for every emulator.

Well I don't really care about screenshots or game game information. Also the way I do it is pretty well organisedjust one folder for the zip files and the save games go into the same folder. Also I'm wondering where you get your ROM's. I get mine from a Japanese site which I can't read. I can only read the name and how big the file is. If you know a site in english with a good selection of game could you PM me the link.

It is most useful if you have a flash card. Also if you (like I) have some kids trying to play their games (not my own kids :) ).

I emulate anything I can. From ZX Spectrum, C64, Amstrad. Atari (all of them including 2600 and 520ST), Amiga, to different arcade emulations (mame, raine, kawaks, neo rage x…) and not to forget consoles such as SMS, Genesis (mega-drive), SNES, NES...

It is interesting to see same game on different systems.

I know this is stupid, but what do you guys mean by emulate?

i'm thinking you are talking about playing console games on PC's, but I never thought that was possible. How does it work?

hehe, also, How can I do it then!?

Rogue
12-11-2004, 12:53 AM
Yes,
Emulation is making your computer simulate hardware of another computers or gaming systems.

For example, program called ZSNES (http://www.zsnes.com/) simulates Super Nintendo's hardware, so you can load SNES rom (cartridge) and play game made for Super Nintendo on your PC.

There are a lot of advantages in using emulators, such as you can save where and whenever you like (ZSNES supports 10 save states), program emulates a lot of additional hardware, so some games even looks better (but still nothings does not beat real thing) and it supports multiplayer (two PC's over network) for games with two players. Here (http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/zsnestut.htm) is tutorial how to use ZSnes.

If there is a system you like more to know about, just let me know.

Guys...

I know i don't have to say this, but i'll do it anyway..

The second anyone links anything to something that contains a ROM,
this thread will be removed.. The emulations software themselves are NOT illigal (tried in court), but the ROM's themselves are.

Do not post how to find ROMs, nor in any way help ppl finding them..

Be carefull, for all of us.

That's something I posted already.

Links to the roms sites might get this site in to problems. So I will not post any. Also not to mention even if they are posted, these sites got shot down almost every day, so there is no point to post them. (as they become broken links very easy)

But if you don't own SNES or any other console, there are some PD roms which turns to be legal to download and play.

I'm new to the emulator world. I was looking on LimeWire for Broken Sword 1 and was excited about finding what I thought was a pc version, which turned out to be a gba rom. So after a little googling I discovered the exciting world of emulation, downloaded a copy of Virtual Boy Advance and have been enjoying Broken Sword. The music on the Game Boy version is very atmospheric and very well done. The image quality isn't as sharp as I'd hoped (that might be the fault of the conversion, if that's the right word) but it's quite passable. I like how the Virtual Boy Advance works. Very easy.

hmm, so is it legal or not? I'd love to play some of my old PS1 games up here. And just how do you upload a cartridge to your computer? I don't exactly see a port for it, hehe

Sean
13-11-2004, 09:37 AM
To upload cartridges you genereally buy cartridge readers that connect via USB although you can probabaly just search for the game you want and download it from a website.

As far as i know emulation is legal aslong as you own the actual game, or delete a game you dont own within 24 hours of download.

Havell
13-11-2004, 11:39 AM
For cartridges you can just google for their ROMs, it's legal to download them if you own the original cartridge, if you don't, then according to the law they can only stay on your hard drive for 24 hours.

i emulate:
Arcade (Kawaks, Neo-Rage X, MAME)
N64 (project 64k)
PSX (ePSXe)
snes (ZSNES, snes9x)
nes (NESticle)
Amiga (Amiga Forever Pack)
sega Genesis/Megadrive (gens)
GB/GBA (visual boy advance)

have any of you heard about the starfox 2 snes rom at all? its a proper nintendo prototype that never made it into full production (only a dozen carts officially exist) it was so close to being released but nintendo stopped it from going into full production (which is unusual as most fully developed prototypes made it to full production) i have the rom, if anyone wants to try it, i'll be willing to send it to them (only zsnes can play it though)

At least they did on emulation scene.

Recently I emulate NES, GB and Sega Master System on my GBA. It's great to have all that old great games that started it all.

For PS, I use Virtual Play Station (connectix, before Microsoft got them). It's simple and easy to use, but there is no development on that emulator.
