There's a big bug in this game...btw, in "my" version. On luge, when making times probably under 1.05.50, the games "drops" to the start list at about 56 seconds. does someone know why?

It works fine in DosBox. What's the problem?

What you need to do is download DosBox from DosBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1) or through the programs section of the site. Then use that to run the game and it should work fine! :D

Don't use the arrows, because when you turn left or right, your player "brakes". Use the numpad, turning with pad7 (up-left) and pad9 (up-right).

i have the same problem with skating ... the last round i can't control him unless i go very very slow and then my time is like 1:32 or so the first 2 rounds are fine , but the last is not , does anyone know a solution or is it some kind of technique we need to learn to control him better the last round , is he getting tired or so LOL ?

i haven't played this for a long time, but as far as i remember ski jumping is just a matter of timing. try to keep track when on the dig and find the right moment to jump off.

On skating the 3rd round has that "problem"...just stop, push left arrow and restart (2 times) :ok:
About jumping...i never went over 96.3 m :cry:
But my main problem is luge!!!! i could make times under 1.04.00, but the games exits near 55 seconds.. :cry:

Is it possible to increase speed somehow in biathlon & cross-country :huh:

My advice:
Speed-Skating: run as fast as possible first two laps, the third lap stop on corners for a while, hope the skater doesn't approach the fence; my time: 50sec. :)
Biathlon: on each of four shoots, winds blows to the right on the 2nd and 4th target, so it's wise to shoot left from the center :)
Ski-jumping: make a good take-off, then hold "up" button and you'll have jumps over 93 metres :)

Great game, let's check if Summer Challenge is mentioned as well!

You have to push forward to tuck and try to keep your path straight and avoid skidding . Once you near the ramp exit, push back. Doing so at the very last moment will increase your height and if you keep your mamimum speed while doing this, you'll end up in the 100's. We also spent some time creating funny replays.... :bleh:

Most of the sports you can't handle well only with keyboard.Only with joystick you can win all sports on hightest lvl.

Some hints in steering:

Use a joystick.This game was designed using joystick featuring continous fire.It's also better for steering.You have more power steering with joystick and you also will loose less speed (=better results).Sounds funny? Just try...from one day to next I just tried playing game with joystick and I got better times..without any more practise.You also will beat Computer players on "World class" easily.

If you don't have a joystick use your number pad on your keyboard for steering.Press "8" all the time for "speed up".Try to use "7" and "9" for steering left and right.This has an effect that you use Right/Left+Speed up...so you don't steer as hard (and lose speed) as pressing "4" or "6".Use break ("2") only in emergency cases. - the one who brakes loses

Hints on disciplines:

Luge :hold "speed up" pressed when "go" this gives you a powerful start,find perfect lane,less snow around your vehicle more better this means drive in outside wall in corners and in the middle on straights,only with joystick you get times below 1:05 to win World class

Downhill:you have to brake sometimes to pass the flags only using keyboard this will be hard even winning Amateur,train to get to know best way,use jostick for steering

Cross Country:power is nothing,rhythm is everything..just hit Return the right way NOT using full power,use more power going hill down,drive shortest lane and you will get times below 3:30 to win World class using keyboard

Bobsleigh:similar to luge but faster,on start use cts fire of joystick to get high speed,jumping in in right moment gives you fast start,without joystick you get times around 1:01,with you can handle 0:55 or better

Speed Skating:nothing much to loose about this,you can't hardly win Amateur using keyboard not having aching hand or broken Return key...cts fire on joystick and you win everything

Giant Slalom:pass the flags as close as possible,look at your skies not at your body!

Biathlon:again do not use full power, firing is the key,train to get no time penalties (hit all 20 targets) 2nd and 4th shot always will turn towards upper right corner, to hit bulls eye place aimer to lower left corner...just practise, how to move you know from Cross Country, hit all bull eyes and you will get times below 4:20 to win

Ski Jumping:well...the shortest discipline of time of all but also the most tricky one,use a joystick for steering this will provide higher speed (=longer jump) at the end of the table,well you cannot affect the wind on your jump so it is always a random influence on the speed you reach (also means you can do great jumps using keyboard),just before leaving ramp press "down" (or joystick downwards) to force your player "really" to jump off - practise to get the right moment to do so,when in air you can affect the position of your skies -press up or down to keep skies parallel (1991 - parallel style jumpers won LOL ),ok next part and finally last one - the landing ...also very difficult to get the right moment for landing,jumps above 95m are very hard to stand..here you have to press Return BEFORE you recognize the shadow of your player on the ground..otherwise it would be too late and you get 0.00 m for your jump,using these hints jumps above 110m are possible,to win World Class you need about 110m and for tournament you just got ONE SINGLE jump so Ski Jump is a bit too tricky to win it always on "World Class" level

I cannot get the sound blaster emulation workin within DOS-Box. I remember it working well through real Sound Blaster bak in the real DOS times.

I can use Tandy e.g., but can anyone tell me the settings to use to get SB working?

(I use D-Fend to mount the game).

I have the same problem with the soundblaster, on my old 486 sound blaster set on sound effects worked and these were better that gay adlib sounds (which is ok for the music and which works). Doesn't work in dosbox even if i change dma channel.

I played this game years ago.
Now I downloaded your version, because I gave this game to a friend years ago. I have a problem with dosbox. I am using dosbox 0.63 on debian gnu/linux kernel 2.6.12.x. The game Winter Challenge quits after starting with this error message:
please remove your debugger before running the games: winter challenge.
I am not running a debugger. What went wrong? Could anybody please help me?

used to play this game a lot 13 years ago.
Giant Slalom was my best subject: almost hit the 1:40 bar (1:40:27 or something)
Had the same bug in Luge, could get time down to 1:05:something, but afterwards when running a good run it glitched out at 56 seconds. Never found out why, but apparently, I am not the only one.
Succeeded in bobbing under a minute, but only just. Keyboard is maybe just too tough for me.
Ski jumping never hit a 100 on a keyboard, but not for lack of trying.

This game is full of bugs. In some skiing challenge there is a passage in the track where you are sooo slow and can't get faster. And then the skating bug.

In a German games zine the game got only about 57% of 100 due to the bugs. Good games got 80+.

Hmm; with keyboard ski jumping really is impossible. 96.7 is my record there.

The rest of my best times:
Luge: 1.06.87 (Haven't been able to find the best path yet)
Skating: 59.something (Could do faster; but that bug is so annoying)
Downhill: 1.54.XX (Found out how it worked because of this thread, I could only do 2.10 before)
Bobsled: 1.00.64 (Great start ended in this time)
Slalom: 1.41.87 (Best time dating from 10-12 years ago)
Cross Country: 3.38.6 (Did this 12 years ago and I never even came close.. well 3.39.0 once)
Biathlon: 5.50.0 (Never liked this one.. always missed all the shots.)

In the attachment is a .zip-file with my records.

bobsleigh: 1:00.56
luge: 1:06.25
downhill: 1.49.00
g slalom: 1.41.43
s skating: 57.93

I remember form years ago that I did a 98.7 on the ski jump but I haven't got a replay of that one.
Luge and ski jump are the most frustrating to me. Luge, because I know I can do at least 1.5 seconds faster than the 1.06.25 I currently have, but everytime I'm faster than that it flips back to the menu in one of the last corners, although I didn't even fall! I sent a replay of one of these peculiar events in the zip-file as well.

And obviously the ski jump is super-frustrating. No matter how I position the skies or how soon I press the land-button, it just won't land when I jump any farther than 99 metres.
Two things I found out about the ski jumping are: (1) the shadow on the ground appears about 13/14 metres before you actually land; (2) when you press the land-button you have approximately 10/11 metres in which you can land, otherwise the skier will crash nevertheless.
I have heard being said on this forum though, that you should (for the longer distances) press the land-button before you see the shadow! How do you manage to get the skier to land 15 metres after you press the land-button?

have you also noticed that the athletes in the grey outfit do a better job at staying in balance on the 'runway' than the other colors? maybe we're just getting superstitious because this game is so addictive and frustrating.
the guy in red with the yellow stripes is also one of the better ones.

i think we've jumped as far as 106.6 but it seems impossible to land.. i would like to see a replay of someone landing above 100 meters.

well you are experiencing effects of the copy protection of the game. the question for the ticket number has a reason. if you provide a wrong number you get to "restricted" mode where you encounter all those problems mentioned in the different disciplines.
if you play the cracked version you will not be able to stand jumps beyond 98+ meters, finish the last round of speed skating, etc.

All I can find is the cracked version with the bugs, also here on Abandonia. The thread indicates that this version has been around many years ago.

Nice, thanks a lot for the link! Looks good on first sight as this is an disc Image. Now I have to figure out what's good for setting up a virtual floppy drive.

In the cracked version some things don't work properly like ice skating or ski jump. You can read through the thread and find this and much more information.

Well well well, it took some time until I tried it out. Pretty easy with ImDisk virtual floppy working in DosBox. So the next hurdle is the codewheel with the ticket number. Can't find anything on the web. Any clues or hints someone?

Thx for these links! Search algorithms seem pretty confused these days. Based in Germany Google didn't give any results like that.

Also for Ebay, got some US results but not a single from UK. Actually thinking about that despite being that expensive. At least this is still a collectable, pretty rare and still kinda cheap compared to other titles with 4 digit prices.

Yes I am :smile2: Anyways this will be another part in my physikal collection. Winter Challenge is a major part of my childhood and I have never owned an original copy, so never won on the higher difficulties. I will litterally act a fool if things won't work with the original.

I won't dismantle the wheel due to my well refined gross motor skills, but I will scan any possible wheelposition. I roughly estimate like 100+ scans. If you want you can get it exclusively, just tell me. I thought about submitting this to codewheel.org as well.

1. You make it harder than it must be. :) As I see, it's simple 2-layer wheel, external ring (flags) is visible (even if I don't understand why do you need them %), internal circle - upper layer with gaps - is visible too. All you need is one good scan and full data on the middle circle, with numbers. As I see, it's 12 sectors (columns) by 6 sectors (rows). So all you need is to make 12x6 table and consequently write all numbers in all cells (easy to do by rows. Select sector with most outer gap ("Figure scating", for example) , match with any country by your choice (say, Poland), write number, turn to the next country (Switzerland), write number, repeat for all 12 numbers. Then select second row gap (Giant Slalom, for example), set it to Poland, repeat for 12 countries, select 3rd row... Looks quite simple for me, and definitely less efforts than 100 scans. ;)

2. I don't need any exclusives (but thank you for the offer). For me, it's enough to have the working game and working codewheel. (I have impression that eXo will ask guys from this resource (https://www.oldgames.sk/codewheel/) anyway - but I can be wrong).

P.S. Also, as you can see, it's only 12 possible positions, actually, if you _don't_ want to mess with a table - it will cover all possible numbers. So 12 scans (one for each inner wheel turn) is totally enough to recreate the wheel. But if middle wheel positions - matching with flags - have any significance, of course, you'll need 144 scans. But I believe, in reality it will be 132 excessive obsolete scans. ;)

P.P.S. Ah, I read about protection scheme. Yes, for re-creating wheel you need only this 12x6 table - or 12 wheel scans.

Hey, it looks after 30 years I've found out I had the wrong copy of the game! I've unlocked that version on Archive.org which was posted here with Neverlock and I managed to bypass the copy protection, but despite looking legit, speed skating, ski jump, etc. are still broken.

Did you guys have better luck than me?

Just an update, a sad one so far. The parcel service delivered it a completely other address. The two involved parcel services don't offer much help so far by issueing this incident and investigating this case. They are neither replying to me nor the sender. The sender did everything right. I hope that copy won't get lost at all.

I have a copy of the receipt, full tracking numbers from both parcel services and the parcel service in Germany actually messed it up while the british parcel service still had the informatoin it had been delivered to my adress according to their tracking status. It's just G**'s stupity not to label a package responsibly.
