Just an interesting sidenote. The game consists of various files that contain responses for different behaviours. One of those files is called "acttough.vig". The thing that caught my eye is that in "Alter Ego Man", that file is 616 bytes, whereas in "Alter Ego Woman", its 1.860 bytes. After all, this is a life sim, so, coincidence or not? ;)

Kon-Tiki

Where would they put transvestite.vig... in male or in female? And with that, where would they put transsexual.vig?

Pralev
29-10-2004, 05:25 PM
Hm, some files missing? :( (I do not mean those transvestite :)) )

Havell

Yeah, I got that, "ohfriend.vig", "kporn.vig" and "nails.vig" are three files that could not be found on mine.

How do you save on this game? Or does it save automatically ever now and then? Or can't you save?

EDIT: Wow! My first double post!

Stroggy
29-10-2004, 06:08 PM
amazing.
anyway, I was wondering that too.
i played past baby into childhood but it didn't save.
so I take it there must be a manual way to save

In order to get past your teens you need to hit the escape button and exhaust all the other options(school, adventure, job). Also you may need to be going steady with someone. No idea how to save though, probably going to try and play straight through it.

Haven't got a clue how to save though there must be a way as the main menu has a load game option!

Well I havn't played this game for ages. I do know that there are quite a few differences to the Commodore 64 version of the game. Thats like withchoices you make and stuff, I forget.

To save, I'm quite sure you can. I know you can in the C64 version. Is it in the options screen (top left icon... from memory here... i forget)

Good game tho, I liked it aot.

mouse31e

Got it!!!! :D

Ctrl-S to open the save menu! :max:

Sometimes there's nothing wrong with just hitting the keyboard until something happens! Not too hard though!

Stroggy

I don't get it.
It says its a life simulation, but basically it always tells you if you made the right or wrong choice.

Havell
31-10-2004, 10:08 AM
Only after the choice has been made, so you don't know you've made a poor decision until you've made it.

Stroggy

But there is no such thing as a 'poor decision'

Alter Ego man can not work on mine and i cannot get to the buttons left and right of the tree+there is no main menu. There is an opening screen that flashes for a second or two even in DOSBox

What an interesting game. A lot of the stuff in here is more descriptive than you'd expect.

And surprisingly addictive, too.

Which file do I have to open to play Alter ego man? Every file I opened was just Alter ego woman.

Well time advances slowly when you use buttons left and right of the tree, so if you're patient enough...

Yes, but remember, while it will lower some of your stats, it may higher some...or so I think.

Like if you're going to laugh at somone because he's I dunno wearing something silly then it may lower intelligence etc. but higher your happiness.

What's up with the messed up directory structure in the zip?

I mean, it looks like everything you need is in the "Alter Ego Male" directory, (There's the .bats for both sexes, and when I play the female one, I do get questions about the OB/GYN and dating boys, etc) but then there's this other missspelled "Altere Ego Female/Alter Ego" dir with filled with files of the same name with recent dates and different sizes. WTF!? And, when I play these files, it actually appears to be the male Alter Ego.

Guest

I just downloaded this game and come to the forum to find out how to save. The alter-ego female is in the male folder and the alter-ego male is in the female (i found out by playing each of the three .exe files and chooseing adult, and selecting date, i asume you cant be gay). I hope this helps.

It'd be my luck not to have the male version work and only the female one, being male :wall:

So, where can I get a working copy of this?

It's me!

I can't get married! I'll buy the ring, but when it asks how would you like to propose, it goes back to the normal game menu! ARGH!

Jenny

Wow addictive game, I played it for 3 hours non stop. I died at the age of 70, happily married! It's almost like a text version of the Sims.

kain_taka

Seems like fun, but when I try to save, I get an error. I first thought it was because the "Game1", ect. files were set to read only, so I couldn't overwrite them. Then, after disabling that, I still can't save. I don't have that problem with the female version, only the male version. Anyone else having this problem?

kain_taka
14-03-2005, 05:55 AM
Just noticed that, after the files were no longer set to read only, it deletes the file! Now I get a "Can't find ./game1" error.

kain_taka
14-03-2005, 06:05 AM
Sorry to bother you guys. Since I could save with the Female version, I saved with that version, filling up all four slots, then copied the "Oldgame" file and the "Game1-4" files to the Male version's root folder, and I am now able to save! I hope this will help anyone else who's had a similar problem. :ok:

kain_taka
14-03-2005, 06:48 AM
Just found out that I was missing the "Nails.vig" file as well. This can easily be fixed by copying the same file from the Female version.

I'm confused. I tried to get a boyfriend and a job in the teenage one but there seems to be no possible way and so then i am stuck in it and i get stuck in young adult too when i don';t have a job! it tells me to go the the job icon but i have no idea what it is talking about.

arrrrrrrgh

I can't even get it to run, period! I've tried every .exe file and each one just brings up the dos window for a millisecond...then it closes. I don't get it. Then again, it is entirely possible that I am...

It used to do that for me, i disabled read only for EVERYTHING in the folder and no problems came up *dosbox im yet to try just opening it* but yeah like someone said male is in female and female in male the save also works fine on male.

Wow! This is great. I remember playing this back in the day on the old Commodore 64. It took up 3 floppy disks both sides back then! I even managed to find the old manual. I only had the male version back then, but now I played both. I can't believe they got away with selling 2 versions back then, since 90% of the vignettes are essentially the same in both versions.

Where can you get this game other than Abandonia? It seems to be ESA protected now...I am too late. Maybe someone would be willing to send it to me?

You'd better not ask for that sort of thing. That amounts to asking for warez, you know.
Have you tried the Underdogs? They have ESA-permission for a number of games.

Actually it was ESA-protected all along, it's just that we used to have their permission to host the game. But to be quite honest, I doubt having downloaded the game before would legally entitle you to a replacement.

Hmmm
1. On Abandonia there are no suggestions for good games to play if you like Alter Ego, that's a shame.
2. You can't make everything to go how you want it, a good simulation should allow more freedom but because it's so old I'll ease up on it. (For example: In Birth & Infancy stage you can't keep the character from being toilet trained or from having their bottle taken away. xD)

I remember this game when it was first released as it was one of the games from my C64 days that I never played and always wished to play.

Fast foward almost 20 years later, and after using a C64 emulator (*cough*), I finally had the chance to play Alter Ego. I found it utterly compelling and quite thought provoking, even though it was quite linear and 'coerced' you into certain actions i.e. it is extremely hard, if not impossible, to live one's life as an utter bum.

The vignettes were well-written, contained drama, humour and pathos in equal measure. Not many games force you to reflect upon your choices in your real life and give you cause to wonder the possibilities if maybe one made different choice; whether such choices would affect one's character.

Alter Ego fills me with nostalgia because the gaming industry back in the 80s was full of creativity. Whilst the games industry has completely changed from all recognition from those simple times and we now experience full-blown multimedia experiences, I've learnt to appreciate how simplicity can sometimes be extremely rewarding.

Riotgirl

This game´s not such a big deal...as someone said before, there´s not much freedom to take the decisions you really want...and, again, as someone already said, it gets you a bit depressed and afraid of getting old...but maybe it´s because you didn´t do whatever you like with your character; that´s something the game doens´t permit at all, so don´t worry (too much) :sneaky: ...

Use DosBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net).
You can download it here (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1).

If you have any problems with it, try having a look at the official FAQ (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php) on the DosBox site.
Basic Setup and Installation (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=Basic+Setup+and+Installation+of+Dos Box)
Command Line (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=CommandLine)
Z instead of C at the command prompt (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=FAQ%2FI+have+got+a+Z)
Internal Programs (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=Internal+Programs) (important, especially MOUNT)
Most of the stuff in there is not really needed, but you would do best to familiarize yourself with the specific topics I linked to.
The mounting of your DosBox games directory, switching the promt to the emulated C: drive and clearing the screen from previous commands can all be executed from the [autoexec] section of dosbox.conf (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=dosbox.conf), so you won't have to re-type them every time round.
Frontend programs (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=DOSBoxFrontends) can help running DosBox with varying configurations for different games.
For both a more accessible user interface and oldschool feel, you can use Norton Commander (get it from our programs and utilities page (http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=programs) - scroll down to the bottom to find it). NC might seem awkward at first, but in fact it is a very functional genuine DOS era file manager frontend. It has a plethora of functions that will help you in navigating around the directories, while still retaining the command prompt.

Though all of this might seem complicated, it's very easy once you get used to it. So remember:

DON'T PANIC!!! ^_^

This game is way better then sims. Sims is a game of patience. I'd rather waste my time playing minesweeper then Sims. At least minesweeper offers a challange.

EDIT: I can't save. It says that there's some error. :sos:

Where can you get this game other than Abandonia? It seems to be ESA protected now...I am too late. Maybe someone would be willing to send it to me?
[/b]
i know where... but it's illegal or something... i would die if i would give you the spoiler, so... sorry, but i can't tell you.

edit: by saying "it's illegal" i mean't it's illegal to tell the site on abandonia. but, something or someone tells me that site is illegal itself, cause there's almost all games of abandonia (few missing) and only two are banned by ESA.

Yep. If a game is ESA-protected, telling anyone where they can download a copy would be against the rules.

if you're missing files you can steal them out of the female version. Or rename a seperate .vig file within the folder.

It's a little awkward though when in your teen years you run into a dillema about not being able to get past the baby fence your parents put up, or not being able to go out on a date because your nails broke.

I can't save my games either, even when I hit ctrl+s because it says there's no save file.

First of all, Great game
But it has some problems as well (for me any way) but I figured them out...
To Save: Ctrl+S, But first you must make OLDGAMES, GAME1, GAME2, and GAME3 Rewritable (right click and go to Properties and un-check Read-only)
then you can save.
The Male Folder is the Female folder and the Female folder is Male.
If you get an Error in the Teen age years about a missing .vig just copy it from the other folder (Alter ego Female).
Hope this Helps!

This game's page should tell you that the male and female games are in the wrong folders (which I mentioned ages ago) and have some "like this" games - and have those games link this one.
Maybe link the instructions that are here on the page..?

I think that there's a web version of this now, too.

People are missing out on games like this...
It's our duty to get people remembering or discovering how great some of the less popular games are here!

I'll fix this today.

Edit: Done. Folders are now switched back. For the .vig files, unless you specify which ones should I copy from one folder to another I can't do anything.

Also can someone recheck if everything's okay with the folders? Thank you.

The online version of this game can be found:

Right Here (http://www.playalterego.com/)

It's almost exactly the same as the Dos version, but not as cool.

I really want to play this game, but I can't even get started-- the arrow keys refuse to work, for some reason.

I'm running it through DOSBox on Ubuntu 9.0.4.
Please help, if you can... I'd appreciate it a lot.

Hi Igochi!

When you start the game, do you get through to this screen?
http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu234/Target_Clan/Abandoned/aetv_000.png

This is where you first start interacting with the game.
If you don't get to this screen, we may need to look at a few things. But if you do, and it's the game playing controls that are confusing you...
Here's a quick list of the controls:

SPACE = Select
Arrow/Numpad Keys = Highlight Option
ESC = Switch from Timeline to other Icons

The up/down arrows are used for highlighting your choices and space is used to check the box.
Left/right arrows are only used when navigating the time-line.

The Icons don't give much away by their appearance, so here's a list of what they are:
http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu234/Target_Clan/Abandoned/aetv_001.jpg

If you've gotten past these screens and still can't play the game, we'll have a look at what else may be causing you problems.
For me, though, once I'd figured out how to control the game (the ESC key is very important, getting stuck on the outside icons, not knowing how to get back to the game, is pretty frustrating) I've not had a problem since.

Let us know how it plays out for you!

I can indeed get to that first screen - but from there I can't move the pointer with the arrow keys. I can still confirm whatever selection the pointer is on with the spacebar, but I can't get the pointer to move anywhere but the default position.

Thank you so much for your quick reply... hoping it's something easy to fix.

Sorry to double post -- I feel kind of silly, now.
I didn't realize the arrow keys weren't moved with the literal arrow keys on the keyboard, but the numpad.

Sorry to have troubled you, but thank you for your help! :)

Wow. That is all I can say about this game. You may not think this game is good at first (because it has virtually no graphics) but it is lots of fun. The game is pretty realistic when it comes to situations. Everything seems like it could happen in real life.

This game has got to be one the most unique games I've ever played... Kinda like The Sims before anyone even thought about creating something of the sort.

They remake this today with the same gameplay but just with actual graphics, it would be a massive hit.

It's moving, addictive, interactive... Everything you need for a great simulation game.

The older kid was taught to be good but was caught drinking but eventually got married, the younger one was a spoiled brat and was given everything she wanted, but wasn't trusted around boys. and the wife had a stillborn before the second daughter was born, and my guys mother was killed by cancer...

This game is soo good despite all that. :)
