IMO it beats all the HOMM games, don't know about the fifth one, though.

Best 3rd person: Max Payne/ The Suffering/ Hitman: Contracts

Because I never played "Thief". Hitman Contracts is the best stealth game of all time (well, Blood Money is actually the best but I can't prove it cause I don't have it yet.). It even beats Splinter Cell and that game is godlike-stealth. *Smacks BP*

P.S. Monkey Island - a good game??? :bleh: It's the stoopidest game I've ever seen.

Yeah, I was born with a brain inside my head. I really can understand what's good and what's not. Graphics plays a big role in any game. I say that because noone wants to stare at a great game (I don't know the plot of Monkey Island, but the screens ruined it reputation to me) with crappy graphics (+ I hate apes and such...).
BP, Hitman is THE best at stealth I've ever played. I have heard of Metal Gear Solid, but I'm andgry at the creators for not making it on PC. I heard it's ultimate steath too, but Hitman:Blood Money is absolutely fantastic. What makes it that is the fact that enemies can recognise you and blow your cover any time they want in the whole game. They have memories - can identify you at any given time. THAT'S what makes it best. Period.

When it came out its graphic was awesome! :w00t:
I just can't imagine how you can survive in a site like Abandonia, where the majority of the games has just a pixellated 320x240 graphic... :omg2:

Anyway, maybe we are going off topic... I'm just sorry for you, cause you're going to miss many very good games (not only Monkey Island :kosta: !) if you search for good (nowaday) graphic in the old games...

Nah hes just here for the forum. :bleh: I havent played monkey island either, but let me tell you a story. When i first discovered final fantasy, the first one i played was X, and that was one of the best games ive ever played. Not really because of the gameplay, but the story was more gripping than most movies i see in cinemas. And the cutscenes were awesome, the most realistic graphics ive ever seen in a video game. Now because i got into this game, a few people recommended number 7. When i first played it, i decided nah stuff it, the graphics suck. A few months later it was raining, i was bored, and i had hours to kill. So i looked through my old games and found 7, and started to play it again. i was skeptical at the start, but within half an hour i was entranced by the story unfolding in front of me. I kicked myself for not playing it earlier. If theres a great story, dont let crappy pictures get in the way. Read the story (or in this case play the game) and make up your own pictures in your head. By the way ive only just scratched the surface of the story in FF7 :bleh:

The forum played the 2nd role when I came here, now it's #1. I like old games, but the ones with the graphics too colourful (stupidely colourful) will be ignored by me. I'm not after the best graphics, no - I hate repeating this all the time. I'm after the best game to date, but I play lots of different games. What I meant to say was this about Monkey Island - bad graphics as in:
Uncoordinated colours,
Stupid characters.
A player should always be the best in the whole game, If not, well - tough luck, I'm not playing it... :sneaky:

P.S. No mor replys on this, O.K.?

Talk to the point.

Lawl! You call that cool!?

Omg, you so have never played the Metal Gear Solid games.
In MGS you can be disguised and do the same thing. In fact, the enemies are so smart that if they get a direct look at your face (they stare at you for a prolonged period of time) they start to say "WTF? I've never seen this person before) not only that, you can wear several different kinds of camoflouge that differs as you enter other environments, if you're in a swamp, you might wear a brown camoflouge with striped facepaint, if you're in a jungle, you'll wear leafy camo with light facepaint.
Not only that, but you can drop nudy magazines that will distract guards, you can destroy warehouses to deplete the enemy's ammo supply, you can poison their food and they'll die from it, via the same warehouse system. You can even freak enemy soldiers out with a crocodile cap and some handy water to swim around in.

Omg! You can eat food, you can capture venomous snakes and let them loose near enemies, then watch them get poison or wrestle with the snake! You get thermal goggles, sound detectors, sound amplifiers, cigars, etc.
Hell you can even get wounded, like bullet wounds, breaking an arm or etc, and have to cure it with bandages and etc.

There's so much to do, including the stupid disguise and everything.
It's five hundred times better than Hitman Pooptracts.

For overall play value, I cannot believe how good Master of Orion is. It was still listed in the top 50 games as late as 2000. I can play it again and again.

Any other game is a distant second place.

Minesweeper. Even though I can solve the expert level in as little as 110 seconds and seldom take more than 150 seconds to either solve it or step on it, I can still play for hours.

X-Com, Enemy Unknown. I enjoy playing it, and will devote a couple of hours a day for several weeks at a time, when the urge to play strikes me, but I can go several months at a stretch without playing it, at all.

It had only 2-3 saves per mision (if you play it at :hard" or sth), The missions didn`t made any sence, they were stupid and pointless, the weapons were pathethic, the bullits...OMG....the bullits were slow, and left marks in the air or something :hysterical: . If you want to shoot at a man in motion you have to shoot a litlle in front of him  . What the heck was wrong with the creator of this game? The conversations between the hitman and his bosses were pathethic, the game is like a Chuck Norris movie.
Probably someone wanted to make something good, and the people that worked with him RUINED his dream, making a game for 5-year olds....
Yeah they made the game to have 2-3 saves to make it more difficult, which resulted with making the game even more borring that it already is. And they made me nervous because You have to pass through some pathethic soldiers again to get to the point where you made the mistake... aaaaaaaaargh. WHAT A STUPID GAME. Sorry, is just that this is how I truly feel and I cannot lie to you :D I can talk all day about the mistakes that they made in this game, but I just keep getting more and more nervous <_<

The 3 stand-outs for me:

The Championship Manager/Football Manager series for addictiveness ("Just one more game, and then I'll eat something...").

Grand Prix 2, for being ground breaking at the time, and still extremely playable today. Although the keyboard configuration causes joint pain.

Rise of the Triad, for playability and depth: Around 60 pre-existing levels, + "Random" Level generator, + Level editor.

Honourable mentions are too many to count.

I don't have most favourite games, but I think the best adventure games I've played were Secret of Monkey Island and Beneath a Steel Sky.
My favourite strategy game (serie) is Civilization and so far the best tactical game is Ufo - Enemy Unknown.
There are many more great games out and not all of them are old, but the ones I mentioned are probably those that will stay the favourites in their genres for me simply for being perfect games.

About Monkey Island having bad graphics, that game had awesome graphics when it came out, adventures generally were advanced at that since all backgrounds were static. There is also no problems with colors, you have to play that game to see it. The old games were made by real (pixel) artists, talented men and women that mostly got replaced by pixel shader programmers nowadays ;).

Xcom Series.
Heroes of might & magic Series.

Civilization series/Colonization.
Total Annihilation
Dungeon Keeper 1+2
Settlers games. (I remember i got a german version of settlers 1 back then named "Die Siedler" even know i werent able to understand the language.)
Master of Orion 1 +2

Just the other day, i bought HALO 2 for my xbox. and without a shadow of a doubt has to be one of the best, if not the best FPS "first person shooters" of all time. its well worth a mention, not only that but i bought in Game for a fiver. if you already have it or are going to get it, then i challenge you to start the Game with the Difficulty set to "Legendery", and see how long it takes you to do the first level. it took me, and this is no joke, just 3 Days to compleat the first level, on the hardest setting. it makes the game so much better. so if you like a challenge like me, you will love it!

It's almost imposible for me to compare strategy games with adventure games and say: wooho these are my top 3. There are just too many games. So I'll order them by genre.

Strategy
All Sid
Black and White 1/2
X-Com 1

Shooters:
Deus Ex (best game ever)
Max Payne 1/2
Half Life 1

Adventure:
Star Control 2
The Longest Journey
Death Gate

And that's about it.

Tricky, 3 just isn't enough >_<

Old (10 years or more):

Stonekeep
The Lands of Lore series (1 & 3 especially, 2 never really grew on me as much)
The Discworld Series.
UFO Enemy Unknown
Doom.
Anvil of Dawn

New (ish):
Silent Hill 4 - The Room
Kingdom Hearts
Monkey Island 3
World of Warcraft (Dwarf Hunter ftw.)

But then you can't really ignore some of those silly classics like The Legend of Kyrandia series, Day of the Tentacle, Toonstruck, Simon The Sorcerer, Sam and Max hit the Road etc

Although one game that used to keep me surprisingly occupied for hours was Sim Ant.
So many factfiles about Ants O_O
& the noise of the splodge of food always amused me. Small things really.

You must be joking... or haven't seen enough FPS games to compare. Halo 2 is crappy compared to many other games of that genre, heck even Halo 1 was better. Not to mention it's console-only FPS game and as a result inferior-by-default to PC FPS (although Halo 1 was released for PC). Mediocre at best.

Only three :( that may be a little hard considering it's not entirely fair to compare across genres.

1: Deus Ex

BEST GAME EVER - PERIOD.

This coming from someone who pretty much hates any singleplayer FPS. Sure it wasn't a straight shooter FPS, but I avoided all shooting games with a first person perspective for years. I somehow avoided HL1, never heard of the game until a few years later when apparently it was the greatest game ever released according to its review scores. For some reason I was "wasting" my time playing apparently not greatest games such as BG1 and 2, Planescape Torment and Fallout... when I should have been playing HL1 ... NOT :P.

Why Deus Ex? - the complete freedom and the fact that it was sci-fi. I can't believe I only played this game at the end of 2005. I had it for years, tried it in the beginning, didn't give it a chance at first, oh how stupid was I. I honestly regard this as one of the pinnacles of gaming.

2: Fallout 2 & Planescape Torment and Baldur's Gate Series

I have to stick all these three in at #2. It wouldn't be fair for me to choose one over the other. I have slightly more affection for Fallout 2, but that is primarily because of its setting. Post apocalyptic setting > fantasy for me, but I enjoyed all these 3 about the same. They also happen to be my favorite RPG's of all time.

Fallout 2 -> Guns, gore and twisted humor
Planescape Torment -> story and characters
Baldur's Gate -> epic, unique and beautiful

3: Grim Fandango, Broken Sword 1, Zork Grand Inquisitor and The Longest Journey

My all time favorite adventures. Story, characters and an empty feeling inside after completing each of them. Beautiful, beautiful games.

1. LBA2: Absolutely the best game I have ever played. The game is very long. It has fantastic plot, enough challenge and enough puzzles, enough variation, VERY many places to discover, nice graphics (with lovely ingame videos) etc. Everything is fine in this game.

2. Age Of Empires: Very good game. I listed some good points here. (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=13980&hl=)

3. Doom, I don't like it anymore so much, but it's a legend. :)

It's a very tough question and i will choose 3 games that are classics and would, if updated today (easier interface and better graphics...not much more) still be massive hits:

Master of Orion

Caesar II (why not Caesar III? because the battles and the province map of Caesar II makes it still the best CB ever released)

Age of Empires (i would just add formations and some little things)

Halflife 1 & 2 (One had more "meat") plus mods ("hearts of evil & they hunger "was cool!)
Doom (all of them)
TOAOW 1,2, C of Warfare - lots of fun via e mail & solo

With all great games out there, which I enjoyed big time....rated by total playing time I have to state a rather strange selection:

Rasenmäher - C64:
2 years of mowing virtual lawn

ROME (Total War Series)
3 years - conquering ALL territories with each group using the "skip end of game screen at 70% by saving and loading again"-bug

Snake - Nokia 6110 (first appearance)
since I use mobile phones.... maybe 10 years

Definitely the best game ever for me too!!!

The Secret of Monkey Island for me is n.1!!!
I remember all those nights spent on my Amiga my eyes red, ready to close without warning, trying to find out how the h... was I supposed to open the crate in the ghost ship to take the root out!!! Oh my God those days were game-fantastic!!!

2. Championship Manager '93 - rulez!!!

3. Final Fantasy X

Runners-up:
I would have to say the Champ.Manger editions after the '93 one in number 4.
5. Silent Hill - all volumes. New style in horror games
6. Classic Ruler: Resident Evil 1&2!!! Those games in PS were the beginning of an era!!!
