Great Great Game!
I Hope the sequel is put up aswell.
The review was a bit short, but overall very well written well done fury!

Well when it comes to a game like this the review doesn't have to be long. There probably isn't a need for a review anyway. Just one look at the screenshots should make anyone download it. But of course reviews are needed for a game to be uploaded.

The graphics arent the most important thing in a game!
Enclosure is a great horror game with poor graphics.
Scarecrow have you played the sequel?

Iron_Scarecrow
26-10-2004, 01:46 PM
Yes I have and I loved it just as much as the first, maybe even more. Loved the ending.

BTW I wasn't referring to the graphics. If anything the graphics aren't the best. There are older games with better graphics. What I was referring to was the fact that when I saw a screenshot for the first time I felt like I just had to download it, and I'm glad I did, it's the best adventure game I have played. There was just something about it that made me do it. I can't exactly explain it.

BTW2 If the second is on the list to be uploaded and needs a review I wouldn't mind doing it.

The second one is in the queue, complete with screens, review and walkthrough. But it will not be added today.

Talking about "Enclosure", I need help on this game. I'm stuck. I have seen the walkthrough and it says that I need glasses. But I can't find the glasses, and I can't find a secret hallway.
I would appreciate help if you could help me. :ot:

Heh, this game is awesome. We should put more AGS games up here, as there is quite alot of quality ones. I had alot of fun playing this game, and the sequel is almost as good.

Just a note, in the review, barganed should be bargained.

What are some other good AGS games?

auhsor
28-10-2004, 11:01 AM
Argh, the AGS pages seems to be offline. It's not usually like that, and I'm sure it will come back soon. Anyways, off the top of my head...
Pleurghburg: Dark Ages, is an awsome game.
Apprentice is also very good, along with its sequel.
Cirque De Zale, which is already on this site is good.
The Larry Vales series and Rob Blanc series are also great, and they were some of the first games made in AGS. LV2 is one of my favourites.
Oh and I almost forgot the KQ1 and 2 remakes, but they are already on this site.
There are so many others... Heres the games download page:

On the AGS games topic, I highly reccomend the Apprentice! And the sequel aswell. I've been playing those for months, great stuff. They would make a nice addition to the site, too.

I thought this game was awesome. I also thought that the sequel was great. They both actually really scared me, I can't look at a welding mask without getting goosebumps now
Absolutly FANTASTIC games though despite them scarring me for life :ok:

I think I've hit a problem

*SPOILERS*

I'm on Day Three, trying to find Matthew's body. I've got the Bear, Stick and Salt ('Salty Bear + Stick' in the inventory), but no matter where in the house I stand it says it's either not working or pointing downwards. The guide says that if I use it in the basement it'll show me where to look, but it doesn't.

Have I missed something, or is my game screwed up?

Fawfulhasfury
08-01-2005, 02:23 AM
It's in the basement. Keep trying. It has to be in a specific place. You'll find it eventually.

Just finsihed this game, great game, definately two thmbs up. I think it was a perfect length and difficulty. :ok: :ok:

If I didnt know any better, I would say this was made by the original Sierra team from the 80's. OF course it's short as compared to the Sierra titles, but it is pretty good. I reminded me a bit like Phantasmagoria but in 2d. Great job, I remember reading somewhere there was a sequel? I'll looking for that right now.

I wonder, does the author of this game get paid for it in anyway?

great games! downloaded the second game seven days first and enjoyed it alot. i have downloaded the first and am also enjoying playing it but it have come across the same problem in the basement. where exactly do you have to stand? :help:

iloveoldies
15-01-2005, 03:29 AM
hehe sorted it. may want to correct the wakthrough. although the salted bear will work to find the basement you actually have to use the salted bear with mathew defoes bed before it will work in the basement.

also found a humourous discovery for this game. keep looking at the same door over and over :D

PLEASE HELP! I am looking for the body, but I cant find it! Its been 4 days straight!!!!!!!!!!!! I cant find it EVERYWHERE! Where the heck is IT? THIS IS SO FUSTERATING

MasterGrazzt
20-01-2005, 01:28 AM
It's in one of the corners (I think) of the basement. Just click everywhere in the basement, you'll find it.

Themyth
21-01-2005, 11:53 PM
Ok, I have given up. I bet the next part is the best, but I cant waste any more time searching. I quit, so I am going to try 7 days a skeptic and hope its better (and less fusterating).

mouse31e
22-01-2005, 12:04 AM
It's in the middle of the basement floor towards the front and slightly towards the right of your screen. However, you cannot select it until you have the stick pointing downwards over it. The movements are very sensitive, but just keep looking at the stick and following the directions! :D

:ranting: I am stuck! :ranting:

I need help!!! I love this game but I think I am not going anywhere.

For some weird reason, I couldnt get the diary of Sir Roderick in his closet!!! Everytime, i click on the book, the closet door just opens and closes. I am getting frustrated!!!

When I tried to use the look icon, it tells me that it is indeed the diary, but whenever I try to get it, the closet door just opens and closes.

Is there a trick to this??? I need your help asap!!!

Desperate

mouse31e
23-01-2005, 03:09 PM
I had a little bit of trouble there, but I didn't find it so difficult.

The book is a very small item on the screen so you have to click on it very precisely. If you don't the game thinks you have selected the closet and closes it.

Sorry I can't help more than that!

I got a question about the plot

*SPOILERS*

How did the Trilby's car get there? and why??

I didn't get it

are there any explanation about that?

ReamusLQ
27-01-2005, 01:11 AM
nope...just a mystery. I'm assuming the ghost brought it in so that people wouldn't be suspicious if they see it out in front.

Scarface
27-01-2005, 06:35 PM
it's a good point... but they say that the ghost is like an animal, he isn't a rational creature

Iron_Scarecrow
27-01-2005, 11:26 PM
Well if the car wasnt brought in, we wouldn't be able to finish the game. So whats the problem?

Scarface
28-01-2005, 07:43 PM
I just want to know HOW the game explains that fact...

KillerMyth
31-01-2005, 02:55 PM
Hey you know the ghost cant really do anything to objects? I think it used that trick to lure people in using the walls. Since the ghost can change the walls, I think that YOU did it in your sleep. Most probable to me. BTW, I thought since the welder was on the loose, I was supposed to hide in the room where the big gun is and wait for it to come after you LOL. :rifle:

That is probably the most logical reason how the car got there. :ok:

This game was really a pleasant surprise. I loved every minute of it, the only problem is it was way too short, but I felt like everything wrapped up nicely, so it was still satisfying. Some pretty tense moments, too.

I really loved this game since the begining... I´m afraid I can´t say the same of the ending. It´s really dissapointing. The story catches you, until you discover what is really going on... I was hoping to see a twist at the end, but nothing.

The main fault of the game is the story: when I finally discover the "big mystery", it dissapointed me and realized it didn´t make much sense... besides a lot of strange things are left unexplained (for example: a car appearing from nowhere, for nothing more than introducing a piece of inventory that the programmers must have forgotten to give to your character)

I also noticed it "borrows" many things from other adventures (for example, Indiana Jones´ orichalchum detector, or Maniac Mansion´s pool... I almost thought I would find a rocket powered Edsel in a garage, beyond the pool)

It could have been an excellent game (I loved the graphics), the idea of five people trapped having no idea why, was great.

I´ll give it 5/10: it started great, but then, it seems that they rushed to write and ending.

Bodrius

PD: If you loved this game, I know you must be hating me right now.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but you can try out a bunch of other adventure games also made by AGS, the adventure gaming tool, which was used to create 5 Days a Strange. AGS has a pretty active community pumping out free games.

AGS was also used to create various fan remakes of King's Quest, Maniac Mansion and others.

Check out the games link on the page to browse for games to download and ask the forums there for good game suggestions.

Hehe yeah the AGS comminity is a great one... Check out the link in my sig and you will see that I'm a member there.

I actually agree with Bodrius. You do have to remember that this was made by one guy (Yahtzee), and he has been influenced by other games/movies. I do agree that there should have been a twist. I was dissapointed to see it go the typical horror route. I would have liked it if it was one big set up.

Run it without those two, jeeze man, this is a freeware game that came out in like, I dunno, 2000, you don't need any other programs to run it, just run it with the exe file it comes with, it works on Windows, it was made for Windows, so of course Dos-Box rejects it.

this looks even worse then a sega genesis! and that was in the early 90'S!

I just played this game, and I liked it quite a bit! The story sucked me in really deep, but in the end the story is not very creative, kind of like a meld between the sixth sense, phantom of the opera and pyscho. Creeped me out a little, too. I really liked it though. So, two thumbs up! :ok: :ok:

:help: I'm just sorta lost.... (This is probably going to sound mental, considering nobody else has had trouble with this). Second Day, I found the map/plan thingy, and I need to show it to Philip. But how do I do that? Is there like an inventory or something?

Rakanichu
01-06-2005, 12:36 AM
Ya know ... it's been a few months now, sinces I played that game ... and maybe playing it alone in my room at 2-3 am wasn't the best idea i had this year ... but damn! ... I'm still tense ... can't leave my room at night without turning around, checking for the welder ... Play it! ... But not alone in the dark at night.

Rakanichu
Played 7 days with my brother in the afternoon ... wasn't the same thing ... think you should play it alone in the afternoon.

Alliwen.

Yep ... you right click, and the inv shos up. Then you just press use, press the map and then use it with Phil. ^^ ... easy as pie once you got it.
And belive me, you'll need you'r inv a lot later in the game.

Rakanichu
I'm gonna play again ... but not tonight.

Rakanichu
01-06-2005, 12:54 AM
When you find the map, and look at it, Trilby should say something about a room he can't find. If you look at the map you'll see what he means. It shows a stairfrom the kitchen, wich you can not see. That is when you should use your pickaxe on the wall (at least that was when I did it ... before showing the map to Phil)

The salty bear + stick should point you to the down right corner of the basement (I can't spell dungoun -.-). I think one of the screenshots show where Trilby has been digging up the ground and finds some green bones. That is where you should stand. Use the salty bear + stick, and when it points straight down, you put it away. Then you can "use" the area on the ground and he'll start digging.

In day 3 you need 5 pieces of info: "two diaries, book on the family and the article Phil gives you" and the paper the lies beneath the phone in the hallway. Then he says something about getting an idea about what went down in the manor, and he'll talk it through with ... forgot her name. The woman... reporter lady.

OMG I know this game too well.

Rakanichu
My english sucks i know (epecially the kommas -.-). But i hope you get answers anyway.

Dont laugh at me now, but this game IS scary! Just the intro puts you right in position (2 mm from the screen...). You play it, the story draws you in, deeper and deeper... You WILL get scared more times than any time before.

I've played most of the iamgonescaretheshitoutofyou games there is, but this touches you more than any of them! Although there is bad graphics, really old school, is this one of the best games i have seen. There is no better way spending a couple of days (five...) than in this game. If you havent downloaded it, do it right now.

Now i am going to spend a couple of days (seven) on another game... Can you guess wich?

I found this game to be very annoying. I hate how you have to go through the game step by step by step. I guess I'm just used to Maniac Mansion where you can do things out of order and you can get different outcomes depending on what you do.

I love the graphics.

The game is just too simple.

Kümmel
16-06-2005, 11:12 AM
@MissNetLess: Yes. But never forget that the game was made by one single person who does
programming as a hobby. Considering this the game is great. A direct comparison with
the Secret of Monkey Island or Zak Mc Cracken is (naturally) quite out of the question.

This is a wonderful game. The guest that was whining about it not having good graphics? Well he can shut up. It was made by ONE guy. It is FREEWARE. So don't whine about an awesome game, just because a guy did it for FREE, and couldn't afford to have better graphics.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but yeah the fact that the game is freeware makes it that much more interesting imo, as it really shows the hardwork and dedication that went into the game like this one. :ok:

About the pickaxe in the wall thing: when I first played the game, I just was really frustrated and took my pickaxe and bashed it against the wall, and to my surprise it broke open!!

i really need help. I am at the end of day two and i cant drain the pool. I even tried reading a walkthrough. I got the metal detector from Phil and used it but I cant find the button under the dirt. The walkthrough says to "poke" the pile of dirt. I tried using the stick but it says that doesnt work. What do I do? Help me please. And whats this about a pickaxe? where do i get a pickaxe? I have been trying to get to day 3 for two days and I cant get past this. I am really lost. Am i missing something? HELP PLEASE HELP

Have you first used the metal detector on the pipe to the right of the pool? It will lead you to one of the piles. Then use the pile (hand icon).

The atmosphere was great. The music and the sounds created a creepy feeling all the time and I just wanted to know what comes next. :ok:

This evening I will start ''7 days a skeptic''. Lets see if its as good as ''5 Days''.

@ cherri

You have to use the detector qith the pipe. This will lead you to a hole to the left. Now you can ''use'' the dirt here and you will find the button.
The game version on this site is the latest one.

This is a really great adventure, I loved the graphics and the plot was pretty good too. Be careful to save your game though, there are points where you can actually die which came as a bit of a shock! It's clever and short with nice characters and a creepy setting. My only criticism is that some of the puzzles are a bit obscure, though it's hardly the only good adventure game that has that problem. All in all it's a great adventure that you can breeze through in a day but will stay in your memory long afterwards.

Just finished this fantastic game. :) Great plot, great characters, and I actually made it through all but one of the puzzles without having to peek at a walkthrough. (Only problem I noticed with the plot was the way the idol's connection to everything was never fully explained, but that's so minor it hardly counts.)

I've gone and downloaded the sequel, though I'm a bit disappointed since from the looks of the futuristic setting Trilby will be long dead. Curious as to what the connection between the two games is at all, actually.

Oh, and about the picture, I think it was just for added creepiness, but it's possible that Trilby was the only one who noticed it, since he seemed most effected by the ghost.

5 Days A Stranger is cool but way too short. The puzzles are logical (good point), but also too easy (bad point). The story is cool, but really classical (story about a haunted manor). They say the game is gory, but don't be afraid : it's less gory than Gabriel Knight (that wasn't already so gore). All in all, a good game worth trying. Too bad the final puzzle is really illogical (you can find easily but without knowing why).

This game seems to cause problems in wine. I had it running before a wine update. I first thought it was due to the AGS engine used by this game. Later found that "Ben Jordan:Paranormal detective" is playable.
If you want to go to the trouble there is a linux port of the AGS engine

FYI, there is a walkthrough floating around on the net written by Primus, it is 99% accurate. One change that is needed is it suggests using your pickaxe to dig up the corpse in the basement, when in fact that wont work. You need to use the "hand" icon and click on the area to dig up the corpse.

Zxby
14-01-2006, 05:30 PM
Another FYI. that same walkthrough by Primus has another error. During day 3, the part of the game where you need to look for the book in the library on the ocult, the walkthrough says the book is white. It is black and is possitioned next to the guy in the library. But the odd thing is that when you pick it up and look at it in your inventory, it is white.

Tobi the black book is either in the library (search each color on each shelf) or in one of the bedrooms. The teddy is in a bedroom. One of the bedrooms you enter by using the lockpicks. The teddy isn't there, so you then go to the window, climb out and take a good look around (hint hint). Then use whichever of your objects seems most appropriate to get to the next window (to enter the room to find the teddy).

Wow! This game is GRISLY! Spooky as SH**! I mean, I'm somewhere in my mid 30s, and I have to give this game full score for scaring the daylight out of me :D The puzzles haven't been too hard yet (day 3) (well, I needed a thump to get the game right), but I say this murderous beast kills Resident Evil like ZAP! Considering the graphics, this is truely a remarkable game. The sounds are eerie as hell, and the whole thing is just such a great tribute to the classic ghost story! I think I'll dl 7 days when that time comes :ok: Thanks Abandonia, for making me aware of this title!

Edit: Finnished! This has got to be one of the greatest adventures I've ever played :kosta: Clichéd? Well, it's SUPPOSED to be clichéd! The 'right' persons get it, big time :D, ancient stories of madness. No, this game is down to business, make no mistake about that! Well it does help if you're able to enjoy ghost/slasher movies. If you're not, oh well....

I can't get past... no, not day III, but dayII! I CAN'T FIND THE FRIGGIN' MAP. I've Talked to Phil about everything and clicked all the sections of books in the library but no map. Is something wrong? Is my game broken? Or do I have to click a certain book? I get an "I can't think what to do with this" rather than "I can't think what to do with all these books!" when I click on the top left section. Is thaat where the map spawns? Are my questions repetitive? Am I overreacting :titan: ?

The Fifth Horseman

You have to find one specific book, IIRC.
If you don't have an idea what to do, just walk around, exhaust all conversation options and try again.

I'm on day 3 and I cannot get the occult book from the shelf either. I know it's a black book on the shelf but I've tried clicking them all, the game says "I can't think of a use for any of these books at the moment". :sos:

Japo
09-09-2006, 10:13 PM
That's because you don't need it at the moment, there's something you must do before, perhaps only conversation with other character. The several books aren't highlighted for you to take them until Trilby knows he needs them. (If you think about it, it's better than most adventures where you take everything and use everything on anything through irrational trial and error.)

1) who is the welder is he an employe or something of the defoe family or something.

2) what do the pictures change into please tell me

3) wtf is this so called "family reunion i have been hearing about at the end"

4) why/how did AJ get in the mansion and at the start does he think your the welder or something.

5) how did mathew die

and why are they killing everyone.

thanks for answering if you do

I remember, about 3 years ago my friend told me about a game called 5 Days A Stranger. He said it is very creepy game and then he told about the first nightmare of the game. I also thought the game was creepy, and I hoped I wouldn't stumble across this game ever (back then I hated all horrormovies/games/books etc.). But after some time my family got the internet connection and after few days of using it, I found this game. I decided to give it a try and I liked it and after playing 5 days, I've been loving all kinds of horrorthings. Good thing that Yahtzee made this game :brain:

as far as I remember, the bear was only used to find one. To find the others, you will have to use other means. *Stick* around and read the whole *thread*, maybe there's an answer there :)

the bear was used to find Matthew and his fathers bodies. I read the walkthrough and im up to that part. I use the cord on the bear and then the stick and then I stick it in the salt. Then I go up to Matthews bedroom and use the bear on the bed. Then you are supposed to go to the kitchen and use the axe to make a hole in the wall to get to the cellar and then use the bear to find out exactly where the bodies are. I did all of that but I cant find out where the bodies are. The bear never points "down" or whatever its supposed to do, so there is no "area" for me to click on the dig up the bodies.

Ok, last ditch from me:If the bear is pointing anywhere at all, you are on the right track, but the spot is very tiny. You will have to hit almost pixel-exact to find it.

how do I know if its pointing anywhere?

Mighty Midget
27-11-2006, 11:10 PM
When you're in the room, and use it, it should point in the direction of the spot. Not downwards, but east or south or whatever. If it does that, then it's working, if not, you have missed something previously.

I think that Trilby talked to himself saying where's the bear pointing.

Select below to read spoiler:
You don't have to use the bear on the bed. You've got to build a detector as it's described in the book of Black Magic.[/b]

I figured out what I was doing wrong..when I made the detector thing and I had to look at it..I just thought it would have been pointing somewhere already..I didnt know I had to use the eye thing on it..LOL..thanks for helping me, though.

I mean... Huh? How does it depend on your Modem?! If you download it from reloaded it works under XP.

This game works fine under Windows XP.
If you want to fiddle with any of the options, there is a setup file in the game directory. Not much you can change, though.

As for your asking if your specs are sufficient... 5DAS/7DAS should work on about any machine capable of running Windows.

Hmm...played it again, and it wasn't nearly as scary the 2nd time round...is that just me?

Then again, just played Trilby's notes, the 3rd one (should have kept to 'X days a something beginning with "s"' formula, IMHO)...and that wasn't nearly as scary as the first two...maybe I'm getting desensitized...

This was the first adventure game you have played? In 2003???

Quote from you about from Alone in the dark:

"To tell you the truth, I never completed it, since it used to scare the living daylights out of me. I just didn't have the nerves to play it. It seems funny now, but try to lock yourself in a dark room, turn up the volume and you'll see what I'm talking about."

Jesus Christ, what kind of an adventure gamer are you?
These new school gamers are so eyed shut, they just play games like Shoot 'em up's and crap like that.
Then when they play games like Alone in the dark (You stil play that game? I finished it when I was 12 years old and the game was just 1 year old, fresh from the factory.) they say stupid things like the above quote.

Please dont make more reviews about old adventure games. Stay in your league (shoot 'em up's, sports and crap like that).

I think it was one of the first adventure games I played, and it sucked me right into the genre. Everything was right; the story, the character development, and the genuinely scary scenes!

Yahtzee is a terrific storyteller... 7DAS and Trilby's Notes expanded on this, and I'm sure the upcoming game (the final in the series) will top them all.

I'm surprised that with all these pages there is only one post where someone is expressing their incredulity about the twin's corpse being buried in the bathroom. There are only two possibilities, neither remotely plausible. Either he buried himself as a final act of insanity, or someone else buried him (either the ones who found him or the ones who dug him up from a PROPER burial site) in which case the glaringly obvious question is WHY. This, to me, is a much bigger mystery than how Trilby's car got to the back yard.

There's also another thing I noticed right away. Trilby won't use his grappling hook to scale the walls (because of the conveniently placed ravine on the other side, which would make you question the sanity of the architect), but in the back yard there is a tree on the other side of the wall. Why couldn't he scale the wall and climb down that tree?

I love the game all the same, though. This is what a good point'n'click adventure game is all about.

First, chant out loud in your room "Welder, Welder, Welder," (for some reason the game knows if you're doing this - kind of creepy) and then go to the room w/ the fireplace and throw in your hat, and the welding gloves and apron. Then there's something else LOLOLOL but I forget.......LOL.....LOL......

No, this game was really great. I was completely hooked and it gave me no end of frustration when I got stuck a few times. I would walk around for an hour before figuring out what to do :wallbash: . I played 7 days a skeptic too which was good, but not quite as good as 5DAS, although the chase scene was pretty cool.

There are more of these out there!?!?!?

Run it without those two, jeeze man, this is a freeware game that came out in like, I dunno, 2000, you don't need any other programs to run it, just run it with the exe file it comes with, it works on Windows, it was made for Windows, so of course Dos-Box rejects it.

Why there is a dosbox logo on on the game page if this is a windows game only? Jeeze to you man. Some one should move that logo away from there.

It's not gory at all, maybe spooky but not gory. The sequel 7 Days on the other hand has one or two gory scenes at the end, and Trilby's notes is very gory and bad for your heart. But 5 Days is not gory.

Lets see, the first game with a gory warring that i known was the Resident Evil. Compared to RE, 5 fays isnt gory. The first one got a sad history and the second one got some blood but none of them is gory. They both are terror games, so there is suspense and death but no of them is so deathfull, so violent or so repeatly twisted to be called gory.
I hope that you can enjoy them as me.

Oh I see so its not that gory? The only reason I was kinda scared to play this game was the warning at the end of the description:

NOTE: The cutscenes in this game are VERY gory and bloody, so this game is not for the squeamish. Alternatively, you could read the walkthrough before you play the game, so you won't be surprised.
