I'm loving the support for old games on the web; I can actually get a hint of two if I need them. I was wondering if anyone could help me get past level 10 in ancient evil. I can't seem to find the exit. Does it have something to do with pressure plate and lever configurations? Any help would be appreciated.

Ouch... I'm still trapped in level 8! Yes, I passed the aisle that teleports me back to the beggining and found the grey key, but... Where I go now? There's no door to use the key... And there is no passage to beyond the key lies! [wow] :wall:
Can you help me out? You reached level 10...!

On level 8 there is a hidden passage near the beginning of the Long corridor after the 1st 2 rooms. I need the password to get out of level 9. It says the adventurer knows it but I don't have a clue as to what it means.

The thing about an adventurer knowing the password means that if you explore the entire map, the plates you need to weigh down will be revealed.
At the top center of the map there are two teleporters and a sign that tells you to choose very carefully. That's because the top teleporter will trap you forever, I think. The bottom one takes you to a series of 4 rooms on the right of the map. Make sure you uncover all of the rooms entirely.
When you get to the last room on the level, look at your automap and weigh down the plates with runes that look like the shape of the hidden rooms you discovered.

I figured out level 10, if anyone wants to know. It turns out I missed a few secret doors.
Does anyone know if the rune stones are randomly generated? I still can't cast any 4th level spells, and I'm only missing 3 or 4 runes. I need the J rune something fierce for the remove curse spell. I've been wearing bracers of feeble strength since level 3!!!

I have recently d/l this game and think it's pretty darned good.
Could you uber-wizards help me past the first level? I've found all the rooms (I think) pulled both levers, killed all the critters, put their bones on the triangle shaped sigils on the floor in case of pressure plates, on top of the starburst patterns as well, door to level 2 still no go. *sigh* 4 hours on level 1 is a bit tedious, hence my groveling to your feet. Please remember way way back to when you were on level 1 and have mercy on me !! Please!! email me if anyone knows

Alright
To get the seasoned adventurer password for the door in level 9 all you need to do is to find the signpost choose carefully with the two teleports. the right one will lead to a room with another portal, explore the room thoroughly make sure that the path of the room are all appear on the map. Keep doing the same to the other three rooms until you got to a room with a rock. Place the rock on the pressure plate on the top left corner to open the door. Then go to the password room. There are four pressure plate for the password so take four bones and use them to place on the four pressure plate. press tab and look on the map carefully and check the four previous room that you had explored which formed 4 distinguish letters on the map. Light a torch and see which letter represent for which pressure plate. Good luck

There should be a secret door in the wall facing one of the three doors. That opens into a labyrinth with other secret doors at random intervals*the blacked out spaces generally have secret doors leading into them. In thenorthern sector you should find a spot that shoots a lightning trap at you from three sides if you step on it, that's where you have to search to find a room with a locked door. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find the key yet, and I've searched almost everywhere, I think. There's a lso a demon statuatte on this level.

Which locked door do you mean?
If I remember well, there are two "handles" in level one that you'll have to switch to unlock doors. I believe there was also a room somewhere to the right of the screen (to avoid any confusion of direction, I'm speaking about the "up" direction on the map) where you'll find a key. All in all that first level is pretty straightforward, all you have to do is search for secret doors every now and then, and switch all the handles you come across. That should be enough.
Also, the final door to level two sometimes confuses people as it isn't always clear that it's open already (at least after you've used the switches). Trying to open it will tell you that "it's operated elsewhere". A friend of mine got stuck there for hours, while all he had to do was move a little closer to see the door was actually open and he could walk through.
Hm, I guess I'll have to install this game once again, I don't remember enough to give exact directions

Well, you get that both when the door is closed as well as when it's open. Have you found the two handles and switched them? In that case the door should be open.

The way to level two is to activate both levers and that's it. Manuver carefully to the stairway to level two. (use the arrow keys - not the mouse)
I need runes too. I am at 13 and have about half of them. :( One thing I learned is to play as a spellcaster. You seem to start out with more runestones.

In case anyone else gets stuck in the first level, I've written a walkthrough for the first level, step by step:
in regard to the directions I'm using: I'll refer to the top left corner of the screen as north, etc.
IMPORTANT: Ancient Evil will hang up if you switch windows (alt+tab) during the game, so either print these instructions or write them down... This seems to be always the case, regardless of which software you're using.
1) Arm yourself with the sword you're carrying
2) East: there's a door, pass through it -> pickup rune stone, gold, RED KEY
3) Door further south, pass through it -> kill boogers, take the loot from them (always move the mouse cursor over their remains to be sure you've seen everything; sometimes you won't see it on the screen until you move the mouse cursor over it, causing the cursor to change to a hand holding something)
East: there's a lever (you'll see it as a column with a handle). move mouse cursor over it until it changes to that hand holding something. then left-click, which will switch the handle. you'll be notified that "a door has opened"
Further east: there's a door, pass through it; pickup bandages, food, gold; pickup and equip yourself with the shield
West-Southwest: here's the door that opened, pass through it -> elixar of healing, and another switch similar to the previous one.
West (in the same wall as the last door): another door; use the red key to open it -> boogers to kill -> rune stone
4) South: another door; pass through it -> boogers. There will be 2 rune stones (at least as far as I know there isn't a randomizer at work, so the gains should be the same each game) to be found among their remains once you've killed them.
Southeast corner: a door, leading to an empty room: nothing to be found, not even a secret door.
East: a short corridor leading to a door; kill the boogers there, then you'll find gold and bandages
South: a door that's already open; pass through it (use the keyboard arrows if it's too hard getting through using the mouse). you'll see a ladder. move the mouse cursor over it until the cursor changes -> left-clicking will bring you to level 2.
Good luck!

Thank you for the info you sent me regarding the above game. I need a bit more help. My finding are here :
Hi
I only found a room with 2 poles at the top near the level 12.
The directions were as follows:
Level 10- Ladder down at the top to Level 11
Level 11 At the top the ladder up and across the down ladder to level 12
Level 12 A room at the top with 1 pole with a switch and a secret door leading to a second pole with a switch.
Is this the right combination? I cannot find the third pole. Can you please tell me where is the room with all the 3 poles on which level and whereabouts. Your help would be greatly appreciated as I had put this game on hold for the last 2 years.
PLEASE CAN YOU HELP IN ANYWAY FROM THE ABOVE INFORMATION OR WHERE I HAVE GONE WRONG. HELP IN ANYWAY WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
MY GRATEFUL THANKS TO BUDA IN HELPING ME FINISHING THIS GAME WHICH I HAD BEEN TRYING TO COMPLETE FOR LAST 2 YEARS. BUDA, PLEASE ACCEPT MY GRATEFUL THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP.

Okay, level 15...How to get out? There is a door at the very south of the center portion of the map. I am almost sure it opens with a pressure plate ("door opens elsewhare") and I think I have traveled every inch of the map and dropped items on every plate. Used all the teleports too - no plate. Where is the stupid thing?
TIP: if you can get the 'revitalize' spell, you no longer need to carry any food, potions or bandages around. The trick is finding the runes to cast it. This game is very stingy when it comes to finding runes! I can't seem to locate any hacks that will let you cheat and add items, although there is a good one that lets you do a lot of other things. :)

Look for hidden doors. There are several passages on the left of the long corridor.
TIP:
When you get to level 18, you will find quite a few runes. (6 or 7 iirc)

I'm in 24 level, I've 3 statuettes. In the book I read for 5 statuettes, and I must destroy the statues before the 25 level. Where are the last 2 statues? or I must crate them? following the istructions on the book? mumble mumble!

I tried running the game in both Win98 and Win2000, and got that "exception" message either way...
And I guess compatibility mode is only available in WinXP/Server2003... I have Win2000 Pro, and I don't have that option in properties of .exe files
Any suggestions?
(this was my post)
I found a way how to enable the compatibility mode in Win2000...
Go to start/run, and type in:
regsvr32 c:\WINNT\apppatch\slayerui.dll
...and click enter. (if you have Win2000 installed on a different drive, than change the c: to d: or whichever leter your boot drive is)
I'm not sure if you need to restart the computer, but I did that anyway...
Than when you right-click on a shortcut to .exe file, you have the compatibility mode for Win95, 98 and NT4.
However I still get the same "an exception occurred during startup" message whenever I try to run it by clicking the shortcut I made to the rpg.exe file, no matter which compatibility mode I set.
Does someone have a solution?
I really want to play this game... :D

Had the same problem with win ME thought I try to "burn" it onto a virtual drive, played just fine but now it crashed when trying to save (Lame game can't save to cd-rom? ;) )
So I copied all the game files back to HardDrive still with the Image Mounted and runed it(from harddrive), it created an little config file in the same directory so now the game will runn and save just fine without the image mounted but it produces an small problem when quiting, nothing serius though.
Maybe if you run DeamonTools you could save yourselves the trouble of a virtual CD the programm emmulates Copy Protections even without the CD Present.

I didn't have any trouble getting DemonCrusher out of the room. Getting to it took a second or two, but I waltzed right out the way I came with it. Of course, now that I have it and the five statues, I have no idea how to use it. I checked out all the in-game info on the topic, but following the instructions is harder than I expected. If only you could wield the darn thing...

I managed to destroy the statues at last. The reverse order means that you have to start with the statue that is farthest to the right in your inventory and work your way to the right, at least that worked for me.
To find the Demoncrusher you have to use the See Reality spell, you'll probably have to go deeper in the dundgeon to find the runes required :)

If you're in a place with a well an three orbs than you're in the wrong place. The demoncrusher room has signs outside it saying it's the room of the Demoncrusher. It has a big column in the middle and only two orbs, and obvious hammer motif (or however you write it) :D

Guys, I'm in a little trouble here. A reached the 25th level, there is a door that requires a key, and I cant find it.
And I have only four statues. Where is the last?
There was one in the lake, 2 in the minotaurs, one in the lava. But where is the other? Which one is the Undead level?
Maybe it is in the abysm level?
Thanks for the previous advices.

I'm sure I am missing something stupid but I am stuck on L22 for a long time now. There are two doors, one I need a key, another is "operated elsewhere". I've tried all the switches and pressure plate I found. Any help?
Thanks to everyone who has helped in the past!

Guys, I've done it! The last 3 levels are easy. Thank you all, folks. :kosta:
About the 22th level, just play with the wooden switches. I think my steel pole (not the four ones) were all down.
See you all in anothers games.

It's on level 13, but you need to get to it from level 10.
Look for a secret door. You may need the See Reality spell to find it.
Fiddle with the switches until you open two more secret doors.
Fight.
Loot.

What sense does that "no weapons beyond the red line"-sign have? And why can you put weight on the pressure plates, it even says that a secret door was opened but actually you canīt see anything on the map.

have you reached magic level 6 yet? it seems that when you advance levels you gain access to more spells. if you are not at level 6 spells yet try casting spells (even if you don't need them) just for the experience.

i think i was able to get cured by "using" fountain behind the secret door on that level. it seems odd but it works.

I wasnīt able to use the fountain. Of course that was my first thought, but I just canīt use it. Bug?
Thereīs a paper on lvl 21 which tells you of 2 special combinations, which each opens up one special room to teleport to. Didnīt find anything that got me further though. And still am diseased.
I don't know how to cure the disease, but the way I avoided it was to kill e mud things with projectile majic (light bolt or fire) before they get you with the disease. Just make sure you have a save file to go back to if you get the the disease. I hope its not to late
I am so stuck on lev 22. I'm sure I've tried everything but I know better after playing the previous. If anyone has any tips I'm open to suggestions
OK for those who are stuck on lev 22 if you didnt find the parchment with the codes for the four switches or dont know how to use them. (vxxv) (xvxx) When you try the codes nothing will happen immediately but the portal in the top right hand corner of the room will bring you somewhere different. I hope that helps
And for the player that is using xp and having problems with slow graphics if you are using a generic video card it might be a little choppy. xp originally wasn't the best OS for gaming. I'm using xp but have an mx 440 vid card which in itself was the best 2 years ago but there are way better ones available now for under $150
But don't take my word for it I'm no 'computer geek'
This game is a very nice surprise. I couldn't get this far without these postings

of course I made a failsave before getting diseased. But stupid me accidently oversaved it.
You didnīt figure out what the levers in the hidden rooms (the ones you can only access with the correct combination of levers) do, did you? Youīre not further?
Being diseased is quite a nuisance but you can play the game even while being diseased. Still need to get to lvl 23.
Concerning the Laptop problem: I currently play on a veeeeery old Laptop, too. Got a Rage lt pro agp 2x still no prbs running the game (under win98).

I would swear that i "used" the fountain and it worked. I also had left my weapons (sword, axe and crossbow) in the first room before the red line in case that made a difference. No idea if it does... Sorry it didn't work out for you!

How do you find the damn Lady on Lvl 22? I already used the 2 combinations from the paper and switched the levers in the other 2 rooms but still no idea how to continue.
Concerning the level 10: I think there was no special riddle or anything. Just secret doors. There are some corridors running from east to west. And the one going down to level 11 is in the middle of the map, the secret door leading to it is on itīs SE side. Sorry canīt describe it any better.

Thanks Dr Jelyll and Miss Vanilla for your comments and insite...
Are we really talking about level 10? My current map shows 4 levers essentially
at the four corners of the map. There are 5 teleporters on the north part of the map along with 6 pressure pads. There are 2 teleporters and 1 pressure pad on the SE part of the map. The floor is covered with small rose and white tiles...any pattern on the floor would be almost obscure (although i've unsucessfully tried).
I've searched all of the hallways with "search" (the s key) and the reveal spell...
I got zip...(I've overlooked something i'm sure)
Any additional help would be appreciated...
Tnx

Demon crusher...looks like a glass hammer...finally found it.
NE of the ladder down on lv 10 is a secret door...leads to a hallway
on LV 11 with two ladders down. The east ladder leads down to a
room with a switch on a pillar. Fiddling with this switch will reveal
two more pillar switches. Fiddling with the 3 switches will open
another secret door with the ladder down to the hammer room.
Another secret door and you're in the hammer room. The hammer
may/may not be visible (I forget). It's on the floor in the NE corner.
I was on LV 14 and after reading the forum I had to retrace to look
for the hammer....

Yuo must find 2 secret room. In the room with 4 levels (22 level) you need to move the right sequence of levels (in a parchment there is the right sequence), than you go in teleport and find the secret room. Only after that, you can find the lady.

If you really want the lava boots read on...
The lava is on level 19. Yes you can get thru the lv19 without them...
I did...but if you're a "purist" and want to aggravate yourself with
a bunch of "monkey motion" puzzles, here's some help to get the boots.
on lv18 there are two ladders down. Take the west ladder down to
lv19. Take the next ladder down to lv20. Level 20 is a big puzzle.
(still can't figure out why there are soooo many puzzles in an RPG
game.) At the southern part of the level is a fountain which
may/may not work for you. You may have to disarm yourself prior
to the "red line". I was disarmed, but didn't remove weapons from
my inventory. That may help...
There are 8 switches at the top of the level and four more in rooms that you
access thru the main map portals. Ther are 10 portals and 8 doors to open.
The key, of course, is to open the doors in the proper sequence. You
start with the switches at the top of the level, watch your auto map (tab)
key and watch for "secret door" opening indications.
When you get the 8 doors open the boots are in a room at the north central
part of the map.

hi guys;
Of course i'm still wandering around looking for the 5th statue. According
to a note, from somewhere in the game, level 17 (the dismal level with 4
secret rooms with nothing in them) has only one statue (with the 5th and last
statue, for me) on the "level of the undead".
If logic serves me it probably is on level 21? Let's see...1 statue each on
levels 15, 16 and 17, the book on level 18, 1 statue on level 19 and the
lava boots on level 20. Level 22 has the Lady who likes flute music. This
implies Level 21 could have a statue....I found zip on level 21 and 22.
In addition, I can't as yet find the exit for level 23 (it's a spooky level
anyway, no foot steps...)
I can use some help here if somone has the time...

Okay.
Someone earlier said that thereīd be one statue in each level from 15 on. Which means the statue of the undead (the one that is hardest to find) is presumably on lvl 18 together with the book. Havenīt found it myself though.
After Aveirons message didnīt provide me with any news (sorry but thanks for the reply anyway) I did what you do best in case of doubt: go searching for that goddamn randomly placed secret doors. AND... of course I missed one. Searching the whole lvl 22 over a 2nd time I found another secret door in the room to the south (west wall). After a couple of more secret doors Iīm now stuck on lvl 25. Have the same problem as Murray.
Hey Murray: did you solve one of your problems? Did you find a way to get to the SW room behind the barrier (where the tortured man is moving) on Lvl 24? Been searching for secret doors all over but couldnīt find a single one.

I's currently wandering aimlessly around level 23, trying to get
to the exit. I've just about worn out the "s" key looking for secret
doors.
I found two pressure pans in the SW room...had to kill a mess of
bad people before I found the pressure pads. Tried weighting/not
weighting them to locate "secret door opening". Got zip. Found
the room with the teleporter and the next area to explore. So far
it was a dead loss...

Hi E.D.
Maybe I can help a little...
I wandered back up to level 16 to take a look. There are 9 rooms at
the bottom of my map. The ladder down is in the SE corner. There is a
pressure pad in the SE corner that opens the door to the door with the
ladder down.
I'm not sure how to get to this stage of the game...it's often difficult
to "undo" any magical events in this game.
There are three rooms at the bottom of the map that show "down
ladders". I can't access them, so I don't know where they go to.
The map of level 15 doesn't offer any help as there are no
"down ladders" shown on level 15 above these ladders....
Hope this helps...

Nemesis; Thanks for the reply...and statue information...
If you hear a plea for help it's me...
Zapper [/quote]
being a born "hack "n slasher" for many years, I overlooked the obvious
(like so many times before)..you must both look and don't always count
on the obvious in this game. there is a thingy (looks like a "fire plug thingy"
with a purple light on top) in the middle of level 23 that is deceptive. (sneaky
little software writers)
Use the "reveal" spell and locate and jump over the hidden teleporter
directly in front of the "fire plug thingy". "Use" the "fire plug thingy" to get to
level 24.
Still looking for the 5th statue...

I find it!!!
The 5th statue!
Lev 18 the undead, in the NW room with 4 graves, you cast see reality and you find a teleport.
Now, I go for the destruction of the statues

Thanks Aveiron;
That was VERY helpful imformation concerning the location of the 5th
statue...I found it with your help. Thanks again. (level of the dead
with coffins in two rooms...seems obvious now)
I'm currently banging on the door on level 25 with no luck. Appearently,
you have to "crush, smash or break" the statues on the pentagram
(according to the guidance from some kind person in this forum).
Again, according to the forum imformation it's on the hell level. That
will be my next stop.

The pentagram is in the 24 lev. In SE room with a lot of teleport, one of that teleport in the laboratory with a little pentagram. In accord to a previus msg we must destroy the statues before going in the 25 lev. But is'nt so easy do it. I try and try and try... :ranting:
but nothing

I managed to destroy the statues at last. The reverse order means that you have to start with the statue that is farthest to the right in your inventory and work your way to the right, at least that worked for me.
To find the Demoncrusher you have to use the See Reality spell, you'll probably have to go deeper in the dundgeon to find the runes required :)
ok for the reverse order, but how to use the demon crusher? I try to use it, but "no use for this" is the response.

Aveiron: Thanks so much for the help with the 5th statue.
Zapper: Sorry if I confused you. As I mentioned before Iīm on the 25th level. Used that fireplug thing.
Iīm not sure though but I think I remember having sb said that you have to place a statue on each end of the pentagram, which isnīt possible for the small pentagram. I think there is another one. Did anybody get access to that room where the man tortured is still alive? So I didnīt even try. There is something odd about this room though. Nothing special in it. Iīll go cast lot of see reality and tell you if I found out sth new.

Made it! Didnīt finish the game yet (because that son of a bitch caught me unaware and unrested) but I managed to destroy the statues.
Aveiron: You were right about the pentagram. You first drop the statue farthest to the right in your inventory on the pentagram. Make sure it lies ON the pentagram. Then you select use and then demoncrusher. Watch a short movie and repeat the process.
Youīll have company when entering lvl 25!

I would like to thank the folks who created and have maintained this web
site. It is well presented and maintained with an ecellent assortment of
games.
After reviewing this Web site, I noticed that "Ancient Evil" had a lot of
forum activity. This was either due to a level of frustration or real interest
in finishing the game.
I'm not real sure what makes a game interesting. If "Ancient Evil" touts
itself as a "role playing" game, I suppose that would set the game apart
from other games. i.e, strategy, action etc. A Strategy game would need
some form of strategy to finish the game etc. A Role playing game would
seemingly rely on the Role being played and how the Role is played to
spark an interest in the game and to finish the game.
As a Role playing game, "Ancient Evil" rather falls short of the mark. As
the fourm noted, the character selection (Warrior, Sorcerer etc.) seems
to play little part in "ancient Evil". In many games, the Warrior
doesn't cast magic and the sorcerer doesn't carry weapons, but
rather relies on magic) "Ancient Evil" is constructed more like an an
Action Game in that anyone can do anything. This is not necessarily
bad, only unexpected.
The purpose for playing "Ancient Evil" is not real clear. The object for
the game is, additionally, not clear. But then again hack and slash
in lieu of an objective has sold many games.
Normally, there is a defined or perceived reason for puzzles, accumulation
of weapons, money or stores. These are only "speed bumps" in this game.
You end up filling your inventory with useless items. Ultimately, this
only adds to frustration. Maybe you can carry your character into
"Ancient Evil 2" where this "accumulation mentality" will be rewarded.
While there is a lot of variety in the "look" of each level, this doesn't
translate into some advantage for the many different characters that this
game allows one to create. At least the looks of the levels added some
variety.
The game seemed to run very smoothly and easy to play without
a lot of confusing ways to fight the many bad people in this game.
The game only crashed once. I tried to cast an area spell (lightining)
and the game locked up. I had to fight 5 bad guys individually and
take some hits to defeat that bunch of ruffians. This was probably
due to my computer, a 400MHZ machine that I keep to play the older
games. It has two hard drives, one with W98SE and the other with
DOS 6.2. (Dos games run better in Dos sometimes.)
Ancient Evil was a fun game...made a lot easier with the forum provided
by the Web site.

Hi -
I've been stuck on Level 15 for a bit now and need help getting out. I can't figure out the door south of the ladder that you entered the level with. It says it is operated elsewhere, but I've tried searching the walls, etc. I have already gotten the demon statuette.
Thanks!

There should be a secret door in the wall of the hallway. go to the door that you cant get open, face it and go to the wall to the right. than head a few steps back and search the wall for the door. It wont be much farther than 6 or 7 steps away from the door.

Allright... I'm sitting in the front of the door in the 25th level, with the DemonCrusher and 4 statues. I think I've missed one at the minotaur labirynt...
I know they guard two statues, but I found only the one in the room with a stair up. Someone can tell me where is the other one? Please?
And, oh yeah, who's with me in lvl 25?

Hi, everybody!
Finally downloaded this game (and other big ones) courtesy of a friend's Broadband connection.
Just wanted to check regarding the EEEK! message popping up at the beginning. I'm running Win98SE on a P4 2GHz and basically managed to resolve quite a few problems related to running DOS-based games and I'll be damned if I couldn't get this game to run (UFO: Enemy Unknown for Win95 was also having problems).
However, with UFO: Enemy Unknown, the problem was due to some conflict with the Directx. Thankfully, I could uninstall Directx 9.0c (which I only use to run TOEE and Port Royale) and reloaded a v5.0 from Fallout 2 that settled the problem. Directx conflicts occurred even when running older Windows games such as Mechcommander and Dungeon Keeper 2 (the sound and VOs ended up being garbled and choppy), so the DirectX Eradicator was a godsend. Hence my question here: can I confirm that the problem with "an exeception occurred at startup" is a Directx problem?
(I'm rather anti-WinXP after discovering the problem with FATS, since I enjoy getting around the problems related to Windows at times by running a Win98 DOS-boot. Thankfully I haven't totally forgotten my DOS abilities and still retain MS-DOS 6.22)
Well, in case nobody can answer, I'll experiment and post my results.
Thanks!

Whew! Got a little sidetracked with Civ2G...
Well, I've finally narrowed down quite a number of variables. AE is definitely one of those games that is VERY much influenced by the DirectX version. There doesn't seem to be a direct conflict with OS versions, just largely conflicts with the video. Yup, as far as what I can tell, it's a video/display problem.
I'm running the game on a Pentium 4 2GHz with a 40Gb hard disk, 512Mb RAM and a RivaTNT2 graphics card with 32Mb on board (yeah, I know the card is dated). My OS of choice is Win98SE, since for most retro games, Win2K compatibility is questionable (even with DosBox). This means that technically, there should be NO problems running a game like AE on Win98. Still, like the proverbial saying goes, "Fecal matter transpires".
I originally ran the game on DirectX 9.0c; the first time, it would not load. An "EXECEPTION" occurred. Reinstalling DirectX 9.0c cleared the problem, but created another one. Subsequently, I decided to check the forum and decided to confirm the conflicts.
DirectX problems with old games are very common, and AE is no exception. Thanks to DirectX Eradicator, I've managed to observe the following problems running the game (remember that DirectX functionality depends on the specs of graphic card you use; in my case, my graphic card has problems with software maxing it out running DirectX 9.0):
DirectX 4.0 - Game loads, with video corruption. Startup of game lists an error window stating that the game needs at least 2Mb graphic RAM. Game unplayable since the display area goes bonkers.
DirectX 5.0 - Game loads just as DirectX 4.0, with the same startup error. Video corruption is minimal; confined to the icons on the bottom screen going completely bonkers and "mirror-imaging" occuring in the game windows that lists inventory/character and map.
DirectX 7.1 - Game loads sans problems! No video corruption, no hanging. Consistently reliable among the other versions.
DirectX 8.1 - Game loads without a hitch, but stalls and hangs within moments of moving around. May be additional conflicts involved, but uncertain.
DirectX 9.0c - As DirectX 8.1, but with faster rate to hang (2-4 seconds).
I have consistently tested the various DirectX versions, and found v7.1 to be most ideal for running the game (of course, I suppose the syspecs for the game might have covered minimum DirectX requirements). This is of course, probably because that my graphic card is rather dated, but after taking into consideration the Win2K function of running software on a lower OS requirement, it is more probable that the game is dependent on lower DirectX versions. The reason why I'm finicky about all this is because I have to change my DirectX version whenever I want to play certain Windows games such as Win95 version of UFO: Enemy Unknown (hangs on anything newer than v5.0), Mechcommander Gold (anything newer than v7.1 causes the graphics and sound to become slow and garbled; mission will also not load) and Temple of Elemental Evil (runs only on v9.0c, and the sounds gets all garbled; downloaded the latest GeForce driver and solved the sound problem, but the graphics all went to Hell). DOS-based games aren't dependent on DirectX... thank God!!!
My deepest thanks to Abandonia and to all who support retro games!

On Level 17 (Minotaur level) is a room with a ladder up (SW). But the room is closed! Does anyone know how to open this door?
On Level 18 is a room E that is unreachable. It looks like as there would be some blocks to jump on. But if I try to jump from the bridge to one of them I always get killed. This room is underneath the room with all the zombies, wrights and sarghopharges. How many secret rooms are on level 18 anyway? I only found one.
Does anyone know if the altar NW or the chair with the skeletion in the center has any meaning?
Thanks for any help!

Hahahaha!!!
Finally got another "EXECEPTION" error message. Best opinion? Freakin' game is DirectX sensitive. Reinstalled v7.0a and it ran fine yet again.
The game reminds me of the computer version of Games Workshop's "HeroQuest" boardgame... with an additional feature: tonnes of hair-pulling frustration moments!!! I think location sensitive (and I mean sensitive to the square) secret doors are totally &%*&#$!!! No wonder Diablo was such a big hit and thank God Blizzard never aped AE for the secret doors...

Where is the doorway to level 13 and the DemonCrusher. I've cast See Reality nearly everywhere, and opened to secret doors, but I still can't find it. Some says it's on level 10, near the ladders down, but I can't find it. It's frustrating, please help.
Please spell it out for me, because I can't use the other posts about DemonCrusher, they don't make sense to me

I guess you get stuck in this part
after you have explored all the map, look at the map and you will see 2 or 3 areas blank(unexplored) the bigger one(the westmost one I think) has a secret door. look for it and you will open a secret door in the north part of the map.

take a crossbow and fire an arrow into the wall just above the pressure plate. Arrow will fall and press the pad, so the secret passage will be opened...that is one way to do things right...another one is to jump over a teleporters (right mouse button) and press the pad. Then you can drop down something unusefull and this time just walk in to a teleporter!

I have the original CD version of the game, I thought I'd give it a second try since I never played it for more than 15 minutes the day I bought it. And after firing it up right now I realized why. This game totally sucks. It's impossible to see anything, you can't spot doors, items, etc. There is alot of junk lying around, the inventory system sucks, the movement system sucks, the combat system sucks too since you can really be smacking away at nothing for while a monster is stabbing you from behind.

"No go" means it is not available for download since ESA (which holds the copyright) has forbidden this explicitly at some point in time. Maybe they will change their view one day, maybe not...

Indeed, for that price you can't go wrong!
I've never finished this game, got stuck somewhere in levels 12-15, constantly hungry and didn't find a way in the maze that I hadn't tried yet...

Do you know how you continue on level 11?
I have found the ladder down to the shop and gone through the teleport to another part of level 11 with spiders and webbs but the I just come to a door and a empty room. I found a Walkthrough in Russian who said that you should find a secret passage to continue in the North East corner but I can't find any.
Could you help me?
You have the Russian walkthorugh here:

I used Yahoos babel fish to translate it and it works good, maybee you can find your answer there.

Ok here is the solution to the LVL 9 , the one with pressure plates.
As said earlier, the answer to the puzzle is to drop items (bones for example) over the correct pressure plates. The correct ones are those which have the same symbol as the 4 teleport-rooms: open your map, look the rooms at EAST. Each one has a teleport. Find the pressure plates with the room drawings over it.
For lazy people:
#
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
# = door
Numbers = pressure plates (numbers are from top left to bottom right)
Drop a item over pressure plates 1, 3, 6 and 8.
Good luck!

I'm in level 24, and i can't destroy the demon statues. I tried to drop the statue farthest to the right and then i selected use, but when i chose the demonlords statues it says me "nothing to use".
I think that i need some extra information, I have Ancient Evil v 1.0
So, If somebody could give me a hand i will be very grateful.

Ok, I just started this one, and I'm amazed! Definitly one of the games worth remembering.
Ok, I'm only on lvl2, but some things seems worthy to tell.
First: character creation. You have 4 stats, I rolled for each of them between 4 and 9. I bet they can vary between 1-9.
Thughness determines your starting health, strenght probably how much weight you can carry. Intelligence might have connection with casting/memorising spells, and the Deaxterity-like stat might be concerned with finding traps on chests.
I don't see a point to start any character but the warrior for the best starting equipment, but everyone on his own way.
Healing back health can be done 3 way: eating provisions (including bandages. Please tell me if you manage to eat a sewered arm!) or SLEEPING or magic (any character can cast spells, se below).
Sleeping is avaiable when you use beds. On level2 there are several, might be more on later levels (or just climb back here).
Items on the ground do not disappear. When a humanoid enemy is killed, after a short while bones will be left - just in case on some later levels you are allowed to sell things pile items together, including these.
On the ground many critters might run around, like rats. If you see snakes, you can kill those for exp!
"Using" objects (like beds, chests etc.) only avaiable when you're close to the item in question.
Items are at fixed location! Enemies too, but within rooms they are randomly placed.
Spells: runestones are the key for these. Runestones are stacked on you, they don't require space, don't have weights, don't need anything to do with them appart from having them.
Now when you have the right combination of runes spells become avaiable. There is a sword/magic!jump icon on the interface, so if you want to cast spells, turn to magic. Click on the icon beside it (when fighting is ready you see a sword at that place). Choose the level of the spell you consider, then click on the name of the spells to memorise them. This works as hotkey, so if you cast a spell, you can immediatelly rememorise it again.
On lvl 2 there are 2 secret doors, one hides a runestone. When I aquired that, with all the nonhidden-ones I got 3 spells at once, including Light Healing.
Spells have a chance of failure, but if a spell is failed, you don't loose amount from memorisation.
It is told when you cast spells, they level might incrise.
Save often.
One reason is, that your weapon can break. If that happens, just reload.
Second reason is to avoid equipping cursed items.
Also on lvl2 there are Gryms, what reanimates itself. The obvious solution is to lead them into a room where you lock them (monsters can nnot open doors). But do kill them at least once, they tend to drop bandages! Now if you piss yourself on these creatures, kill tem, save, then immediatelly reload - poof, do to a bug they change to skeleton, what means they are forever dead.

Ok. So I've reached lvl7, and have some better understanding of the magic in the game.
So, when your magic skill gets upgraded, automatically all your spells become stronger, and a new level of magic spells gets unlocked. This means when you try to improve your magic, it doesn't matter what spells you use until you use something.
There is also a mana-stat what limits the spell-usage. Combine this with the chance of casting-failure, and you get the idea how lame offensive spells are.
I also read through this whole thread, and people asked about where to find runestones. Until now I've found: A B C D E F G H J M N O P Q R T V W Z (so these wee gathered on level 1-6). I'll report when I find new ones.
I'll also make a spell-list when I find more rune.
Ah, the fighting-system just need you stand right beside an opponent and start clicking. There is a kind of autoaim - what sometimes do not work. If that happens move away and turn into the missed enemy's direction.
All attacks, including spellcasting works in realtime.

I've reached level 11.
The ladder-system started to be confusing, so I looked on the maps here on abandonia, and although they are not at all full, but contains all the relevant rooms, so it is ok I think. The important thing is, on level 14 will all the roads meet again.
Some thing about runestones: It seems multiply copies can be found at places. Before starting level 12, I only got 2 new: S and Y.
On level 7 there was an interresting room: you could not move anywhere appart from the block you stood upon. (It seemed you are standing in outer space or something.) A good jump helped, but unfortunatelly I managed to lock that room, because where you jump up is a zombie (has selfresurrection), and it seems it walked right at the place you could jump up to. (Another strange thing is, that from where you jumped up, you still are on level 7 according to the map. Maybe a half-floor between 6 and 7?)
On lvl 7 there was also an invisible teleporter (it was only visible on the map, it had nothing to do with the see reality spell).
On level 10 you have lack of keys. There are 1 less key then closed doors, and I managed to open the wrong one (or something like that). But the ulock-spell worked on the door. Strange, if you ask me.
Item-management: I looked into a walkthrough just for the controlls and for a possible spell-list. Although no luck for those, but I've found out that the only sellable items are weapons (on level 14). So much for gathering bones, skulls, and such.
There is also a "Starving" condition, so this game IS timed (although not much, even if you are thorough you must have way enough time to do things). Eating an apple did the trick.
Ah, one sad thing: in level 9 there was two teleports with the note "choose wisely". (There was a similar one on an upper level, but that seemed to have no reason at all.) The solution of the puzzle is 'translating' the text: "you must choose the RIGHT one":whistling:

Ok, I've reached level 14.
My missing runes: I, K, L, U
Spells' manacost: first level spells cost 2 mana per cast, and every level higher means +3 mana per cast (so lvl2 spell costs 5 etc.).
I just recently unlocked spells level 6. Don't know if this is the maximum.
The spells I have:
- shock: seems to be an offensive spell, maybe it stuns every nearby being? I only casted this once, saw no result (and there was no being nearby).
- light heal: the basic haeling spell.
- identify magic: for a looong wile you'll be able to identify in the full name of it everything. (A minor note: when something is on the ground, the identify-icon works on it too. Useful when you check the ground for items in a spiderweb.infested area. Never ever pick up spiderweb! You won't be able to drop it, it has no use, so just lessens the space in your backpack.)
- candle flame: least bright flaslight-effect. Lasts looong.
- magic missle: a standard arrow-spell.
- fireball: an improved arrow-spell.
- hold: a very useful spell. For a little while (what is more then long enough) makes an enemy just stand there. Memorise one at least, just in case. Requires a target to cast.
- slow disease: I never got diseased, and this isn't cure, but still, just to be on the safe side, memorise one.
- lightning bolt: an arrow-like spell (don't know if it is stronger then fireball)
- see reality: dispells invisibility. Lasts forever on the target.
- stirring image: seems to put a blurring effect on you for a period. It is actually unconfortable for the eye, so I usually skip it.
- torch light: improved flaslight-effect.
- deaths door: no idea. Requires a target. (my bet is, that it teleports away the target)
- great heal: although it heals moe then the light heal, I think this is not that mana-efficient
- remove course: with this you can remove cursed items from you. But as cursed items do not have positive effects at all, and you identify everything (or at least save before trying things up), you'll never need this.
- unlock: unlocks doors. Even doors which require keys. (I heared some bad things about a door on lvl 25, so I created a thief character in case I'd stuck. One more lockpick would be a real adventage, and I'll never use a key if I can avoid it.)
- summon servant: summons a creature what fights on your side, and follows you. It circles around you, and goes through walls. It attacks everything in reach. It disappears after a period, or when it kills something.
- firewall: actually this is just some improved version of fireball.
- revitalize: it heals you to your maximum hp in an instant. Cool. (But healing spells will have lesser importance when you find a ring of regeneration.)
- escape: this is some kinda teleport-spell what teleports you. One memorisation cann ot hurt.
- daylight: I think this is the ultimate version of the flashlight spells.
- lightning storm: shoots lightnings in all directions.
- magic shield: didn't try it yet, but seems cool.
- invisibility: didn't tried it out, and might spoil the fun.
- horde: according to the icon, it sommons many servants.
- death: didn't tried it out yet, and if it does what it seem, it might spoil the fun.
One other thing: from level 12 some snail-like things appeared. If you hit them with a melee weapon, the weapon disintegrates (and cause no harm to that thing). Ugly trick. Use spells or crossbow.
On lvl 11 I found some mushroom-sage. That is a place where you can spend a LOT of money. You only get info, what are only background-story, although the location of the undead-level might be useful. Oh, and it tells the truth about the origin of the Universe. And you can ask the weather outside the Crypt. Just in case XD

On level 15 I found the VIP-pass (it is an item, not a code!), so I went back to the shop. I had to go back on places and gather weapons to sell to the statue in level 14, and during these trips I noticed I left out a room on level 9. There I've found runes K and L.
In the shop I advise buying the Headcracker axe, the magic plate mail, a flute, all the lockpicks (they are cheap, and a spare key can always be useful), and a lucky bracelet. Sadly ring of protections have an expiration-rate, so leave them there.
New spell-informations:
- Death does what I've expected: it kills the enemy.
- invisibility does what you expect for a period.
- magic shield protects you from magic (including traps), but have a short duration.
- horde summons 2-4 servant. It IS combinable with summon servant.
New spells:
- stone skin seems to give you protection from physical damage for a looong time.
- hold time: stops every enemy from action. You still can kill them. In case of emergency I memorise one of this, but I think this spoils the fun.
- resist fire: it protects you from fire damage for a looong time.
On level 15 was rune I.

I've just finished level 18.
Experience-draining monsters? Then I say: hold time. Hold time also stops you regenerating mana by the way.
Here I experienced save-games going corrupt. Fortunatelly I've used multiply saves.
To get the Demon Statue first reach the northwestern part of the map. Cast magic shield, walk to the door (the spell protects you from the heat coming through the grate), cast hold time, go in, cast see reality, get the statue, then get out as soon as possible.
To have enough mana, use your bedsheed to sleep on it (instant bed! worthed carry around).
In one of the rooms are a bunch of runestones. All chests which contains them are trapped, so use "find trap" until you find the trap. Then disarm the trap, get the runes. I've found here the last rune (U), so my collection is complete. The last spell I got is Fear, most probably it makes monsters going away from you.
Now the Deaths Gate spell: it does squat as far as I can tell. When I've casted it on a monster it said "monster is now a gate of death", but nothing else seemed t happen. According to the icon, the spell should be related to the Death spell, if anyone wishes to experiment.
CURING DISEASE: To get use the Fountain of Health on Level 20, hit the "use" icon, like when you want to use an item from your backpack. Then click on the fountain.
With this problem solved, I remember another fountain on the level with the artifact-hammer. I won't go back that much, but if someone starts the game again, please check if it has some use! (level 13, northwest section. It is guarded by a bunch of howls, or whatever their name is)
THE LADY: So with this many had problems, although these later levels seem to me pretty streightforward. Just pushing every button and finding the secret doors. Anyway, first you have to open all the doors you can on this level. Go around, find the portals, but do not enter them yet. If everything you managed to find, enter the portals. You'll need those beside the 4 switches. Get pass the rooms you find the other side. Then take out the parchment you found just one level before. You have to figure out witch symbol means "up" a lever, and witch is down. If you position the levers into the supposed combination, then one of the portals there will travel you elsewhere then before. Get through those places, pull the levers.
After you managed this, enter the third portal on the level 22. There you'll have to find some secret doors, then finally the closed door will be open, and you find The Lady, what is a statue. You better have some flute, or you'll have a long trip backwards. Play the flute right beside the statue - and it gives you a key. (Theoretically you could bring another bronze key from another level and skip the whole mess, but hey, where's the fun in that?)
About items: On the first levels you might want 1-2 portion of food, but otherwise skip that. You also never need healing equipment, just use a bed. Wear whatever item you find, but otherwise don't carry any around. I never managed to light a torch (and you soon learn some flaslight-spell anyway, also shields are more useful). Weapons are for selling, but after you bought the items from the shop (check list above), you'll never need them again, nor any gold anymore. A crossbow and a magical melee weapon is a must. And I never found a magical amulet (but I have a nonmagical-one, beats me why). Notes are note required to carry around.
So basically bring your bedsheat, your map, whatever you actually wear, 1 portion of food, and a crossbow. The rest can be dropped (ok, maybe crystal balls are ok to have), and the demon statues + the hammer can come too.

Yuo must find 2 secret room. In the room with 4 levels (22 level) you need to move the right sequence of levels (in a parchment there is the right sequence), than you go in teleport and find the secret room. Only after that, you can find the lady.
