View Full Version : Forum Upgrade

Kosta
20-05-2006, 01:50 PM
Just a short announcement. The forum will be upgraded to the latest stable build in the next couple of days. There will be short outages, and the skins might look broken until everything is fine tuned so I will ask you for a couple of days of patience. The new forum is better optimized for large databases like the one abandonia has become, and it will also be more feature packed so I hope everyone will welcome this addition.

It will still look quite similar, right? Just extra options etc.

Yeah, I'll modify the skins so that they suit the new version! You'll be able to configure the rest yourself, shouldn't be too much of a shock :)

SupSuper

Ohhh, so you'll finally be upgrading to the paid 2.0 version of IPB?
Thumbs up from me, I love it's features, like multi-quote, attachments in posts, etc. :D If you need help with the new skin just ask.

the look of ipb 2.1 is a bit more rectangular than ipb 1.3, but you get used to that. :D

You can check how it will look on Reloaded forums, they were the guinea pigs :P

What's so bad about it?

Sweet sounds good does it mean we lose our post count and have to re register though.

#BlakhOle#
21-05-2006, 08:22 AM
I dont think so that would mean we lose all our muds and vips and that would be too much of a problem to fix in the end, so i reckon we'd be ok with that in the start. Am I right!?:w00t:

SupSuper
21-05-2006, 02:47 PM
It's just a upgrade, not a restart, so everything should remain the way it is. Aside some issues, like AR is having. :P

And why do people hate multiquote? Getting to quote multiple posts at once is bliss! :D

Actually - I think this sucks. This skin is just too "modernly-corrupt" as I call it.
Too many sites use this skin and I've grown to hate it. The last skin was more tidy and stuff, this one just plain sucks IMO. :(

Just a minute ago I saw everything in BLUE and no Abandonia logo ...

Help, where am I? Then, when doing refresh, nearly everything looks like it used to ...

Only some of the blue is left (the squares with the page links).

To prevent the same confusion as in the AR forum:

- The new Quote button is for multi-quoting. If you want to quote multiple posts, just press the Quote button on the respective posts and hit Add Reply.
- The Reply button acts the same as the old Quote button.

wow this is great, collecting many qoutes used to be a bit of work (because the forum engine didn't allow forpreviewing of posts with no new content)!

however I would still like to know what a forum rpg is. (maybe I should just PM #alex# about it...)

Hmmm, just a quick thing. The Abandonia banner on the top doesn't go to abandonia, it goes to the front of the forums. There is a link to Abandonia up there, but it doesn't open a new window any more.

I don't know if this is better or worse in people's minds. Maybe a poll would be necessary to decide.

Still getting used to the new interface. Been using it since 5 minutes and I can already see the improvements over the old one. One thing, though: If you really go through with the fast reply, make the box where you write stuff permanent. So you don't have to click on "Fast Reply" everytime.

h?m... are the attachments working?

I'm asking this because I tried to attach a file at the translator's forum and got a message saying:
"The total filespace required to upload all the attached files is greater than your per post or global limit. Please reduce the number of attachments or the size of the attachments."

And the most bizarre is that I was trying to edit one of my posts where I keep an attached file with the current progress of the Portuguese translation and under it says "You have used 171.84k of attachment space for this post. You have -4057560bytes left for this post."

What the heck?! isn't 4057560bytes something like ~3.87 MB? How can I have -3.87MB left for a post if my attached file is only 171 kB?

Kosta

Okay, now I feel like I'm nit picking, but with linking the games to the AW list the forums aren't automaticly updated so the "Review and download/buy/nothing" link reflects the proper state. Albalon is a recent example of it automaticly changing ESA status but not forum tag.

My proposed solution would be a simple search and replace to change "Review and blah" to just "Read the Review"

The Fifth Horseman
29-05-2006, 05:06 PM
Not sure... that would involve having a bot-script with mod-level powers, and might cause a potential security threat.
How about just using "Review + Download (if ailvaible)"

well I think the php scripts can do that as well.
Although it requires a bit of mysql + php magic to get it running correctly

The download(if available) thing is a nice solution.
Although the task of updating all forum openers isn't fun. (although it could be scripted though.)

AHAH... Now I get it... this new "forum" sums the length of all the attachments in all my posts - and apparently I have around 4 MB of attached files in all of them - and it only allows me to have 200 kB for the entire forum... so I'm almost 4MB over my "attachment quote"... Isn't it possible to increase this number a little bit? I understand I should erase most of the "junk" (if each one of the 7000 members had 4 MB of attachments on their posts, there would be around 28GB of "stuff" in the server that hosts the forum), but I think 200 kB is a little bit to small...
