I feel like making an RPG with a Link To the Past (Zelda) style of play. This isn't really a super serious project but just one to have fun with. We might get it done. We might not. Just something for people to do in spare time. Just for fun. Ideas anyone? I'd prefer it be made in AGS cause that's the only thing I'm decent at.

It doesn't exactly have to be set like LttP but in that game style sense.

Sure, I'll help. Not too skilled at programming, though, but I could work on the story and dialogue.

You were downloading RPGmaker's RTP. You'll still need to find the actual program.

Not sure if you can use this, but here's an idea I had years back for a medieval setting rpg.

About magic: I never liked the 'sleep to memorize' AD&D style, and I thought the 'mana' style was missing something to make it believeable. So I thought: Let the wizzard use health points. The more powerful the spell, the more health points drained. At any level you can try ANY level spell, but with a chance of backfire. That chance increasing for each level your character is below the spell level. The exact nature of the backfire would vary according to what type of magic used. If it involved demons, the demon would turn against the mage and the party, if it involved elements, the mage/party would be stoned/drowned/burned etc. If severe, the backfire would not only kill you, but also anyone standing close. Then the mage would have to rest to regain the lost HPs unless he gets to zero HP (due to him sacrificing himself for the party?) and kicks the bucket.

Also, it would have been cool to have mages tens of thousands years old. Cunning, wise, powerful.... mad as a hatter...

Please Make a MMORPG or somthimg we could all play together.

And now something completely different:

Since role playing is about imagination, could it be that the players don't play 'living' charachters? I mean, imagine a Disney cartoon where a book comes to life. It would be a challenge to play a 'dead' object, or a non-physical idea, like an rpg rule. Imagine this scenario: In the quest for the ultimate rpg, the rules take the law in their own 'hands' and battle for domination. They talk, walk, do all the things we do, still they're rules, with a rule's 'mind and behaviour'. Some are strict, some are more 'elastic'. They all have their own agendas, powers and whatever the game designers can think of.

EDIT: You even got tension here: Anarchy (the freedom of rpg playing) vs government/bureaucracy (the rules)

Just an idea. Not very well thought through. Still, it could be interesting.

Nooo!!!

Please don't use RPG Maker! Unless RPG Maker XP has support for action/adventure RPGs like LttP... I know that RPG Maker 2k only did turn-based combat.

A game that plays like LttP already has a gameplay/fun advantage over traditional RPGs. It may take more effort, but this is a great style of game. I'm always trying to plug C++ and SDL though (try them!). They can make the difference between programming a game and 'making' a game with RPG Maker's lame restrictions.

An AD&D RPG game would be awesome, something like Baldur's gate, Planescape: Torment ect.

There are loads of Zelda-like RPG's.
MMPORPG's come with high server costs, unless someone is willing to pay the bill it'll be a no-go (This is why there are very little free MMPORPG's)

Well I was planning on making a remake or something along the lines of the game Albion (http://www.abandonia.com/games/428/download/Albion.htm). So far only one other forum member is interested but at the moment we have a skills shortage :(

An idea that I've had floating around in my head for a while that nobody seems to want to bring to life is that of an RPG with a more modern feel. Why do RPGs have to be swords and magic and dragons? Why not a game set in the 19th century - a western? Or even a 20th century RPG? Would it be against some sort of RPG law to include guns instead of swords and magic? I think a western themed RPG with horses, guns, cowboys and bandits would be a fantastic idea. The upcoming Frontier 1859 (http://frontier1859.com/mmorpg/) looks like it might fulfill these needs, but probably won't be the sort of thing I'm thinking of, in the end.

One of my favourite RPG's named Arcanum has guns and such.. you can either choose to side with magik or technology.. very interesting :)

Albion has a pistol in it if that qualifies :P

This is cool to read others ideas about an Online RPG.

I too am fond of the Zelda Style. Zelda Classics rocks! Well.... only until I played it too much.

I am working on an RPG using code from both CoffeeMUD, AimeMUD, and LaundraScrp. Most of the things that you could want to do, are able possible with the built in basic scripting engine. Simple and sweet.

The game im working on is classless. I hate player class. Isn't there enough catagory in life without filling my games with an absurd amount of special classes? So... i removed class. Race is the only thing remaining, and based on EXP you can train in anything you like. This gives the game DYNAMICS! You never know what the person your talking to truely IS. Skills are avaliable to EVERYONE. You can pick and choose what fits your character best.... no restrictions because your a bard.... or a mage.

If anyone is interested in this type of game, let me know. I own a small but adaquate server that could serve a small online game, which is what im hosting the game on right now.

For those who might be interested..... http://mud.richardcompton.net

on the site, there is a players guide and forum. The players guide is about 40% complete. The sections dealing with Religion and Mythology are going to be expanded upon.

I really like the idea of taking HP from magic users in place of MANA. Thanks for the idea.... ^_^

Thats all...

I don't know the Idea of the MUD always intrigued me. But In the end the complexity was a let down and the learning curve could bloody kill a man. That is why I prefer MUSH's (multi user shared halucinations) As they focus on no battleing but instead on social function and the ability to create a world without worrying of battles and the sort.

They really should make a PC RPG out of cyberpunk!
