I'd DEFENETLY have to say this is my top 3:
Colonization
Civilization
Ufo: Enemy Unknown
Had them all on Amiga 500 and 600, and now have them (originals) for PC also :)

Best games ever are
Quest for Glory Series
Dune 1 & 2
Baldur's Gate 2
I spent plenty of time playing Ultima IV. Also have fond memories of commander keen :)
One that I just had an impulse to download was The Settlers 2 Gold Edition.
I love that game, I sit up for ages trying to complete the world campaign.
It's so huge, and complex. It took me 10 hours just to conquer europe. Bit shorter than the Romans in real life though. :P

From before the win 95 scene I would say civilization and colonization score high on my list. Master of Orion and Master of Magic are also a good pair.
A little further back then even those is Airborne ranger. A very nice game for the time.
There are a ton of good classic games. Trouble is only a few remain worth playing since their are so many much better modern games that have the same set up but deliver much more. Civ3 compared to civ for instance. Colonization and Master of Magic are exceptions since they have no real modern competitors.

Well i love adventure games, and especially The sierra Quest ones. The space quest series would have to be my favoutite, with SQIII being the best out of them.
I love strategy games such as Civilisation, and i also love the lemmings games as well as the keen games. There are so many old games i love, its hard to say them all.

Megatraveller? Sounds interesting! Could you give me a hint as to where to acquire it? Do you think I should include it on Abandonia?
Did I say Ultima IV (all the way at the top)... damn - I meant VI; also VII was also brilliant. Any other RPG lovers here?

I noticed most of you mentioned Civilization and Ufo. Anyone remember North & South? Pretty bad graphics, even back then (I've never seen the Amiga version), but gameplay was really something.
And Whacky Wheels? There's another great multiplayer game. The race mode sucked, but the splitscreen duel was really furious. You had to collect ammunition, and often you would ran out of it in the middle of the chase and you would still run after your opponent so he wouldn't figure out he can shoot you whenever he pleases. And Scorched Earth (The mother of all games! :) ) ... I could talk about that one for hours.
My favorite games back then where all multiplayer games. I prefer other kinds of games now, but great games never become old.

Pirates!
Civilization
OMF 2097
P.S. I don't see Pirates! for download. Is this possible?
I'm a little more of a strategy guy so the abandonware games i like most are Civilization, Caesar, and of course DUNE 2, Dune 1 is great too, I finished it about 6 or 7 times, my curent record is 'bout 75 days. And the best adventure game ever is Star trek: the 25th anniversarry.
Icemant90
29-02-2004, 01:37 PM
My top three:
1. StarCraft
2. CivNet
3. SimCity
Is StarCraft still copyrighted (is that a word?), because I would love to download it in a netcafe and play it :DI think the other 2 are abandonware, are they?

hmmm
Red Alert (never played the original C&C... only the few fan-made remade C&C missions for C&C generals)
I also liked the short part I played of planescape torment (I'm trying to play it again but it seems I lost CD 3)
another great oldie (IMO) is Broken Sword

Some worthwile games that I know are abandonware,
- Master of Magic
- Master of Orion
- Mechwarrior 2
lots of others no doubt but these are the ones I can think of at short notice. I plan on doing a review for Master of Magic once I am done with the civ2 review.

Grim Fandango also springs to mind
not THAT old (compared to red alert)
shame that it never got as widely known as Monkey Island
In my opinion Grim fandango was an excellent mix between humor and a story... well it had a better story than Monkey island!
I mean think about it, stealing soules, communist demon-bee dockmasters!

Here my votes:
1. Puzzle: Tetris
Being nearly as old as the computer itself, Tetris is a forever legend that still lives to this day. I still play around 10 mins of this game nearly every day, just to warm up to other things! Tetris is programmed in EVERY platform I have come across, thanks to its simplicity, and is enormous popular, thanks to its elegance. All I have said is perhaps unecessary, because if you do not know Tetris, you are probably not a gamer. To an extent, the world economy in 80's and 90' still see Tetris as culprit for global decrease in productions, as people in most office is more interested in playing it than their work...
2. FPS: Doom
A pioneer in 3D FPS, Doom is holding a lot of people at my office staying up all night and fight for their, uh,... freedom. Doom is true channels for our natural aggressiveness, and it's 3D reality is quite amazing, with extremely fast speed at the time it was released.
3. Strategy : Xcom 1 UFO Enemy Unknown
This game is the best game in 1994, and I am sure this game is also top 10 of the best game ever. The game is a mix of strategic thinking and turn-based squad battle, and it's unpredictable enough to keep you interested. The sound will generate terror if you play the game at night, and the feelings you have when facing aliens with not enough TU's is quite unforgettable! Now a lot of utilities is made that make the game more challenging and exciting, so the replayability is limitless.
There are a lot of sequels after this game, but no games lives up to the predecessor, and it's proving again that the simplest is the best.

Yes, Mad TV... this game caused many frustrations for me. First version I ever obtained (around 8 years ago) had a virus and wiped my HDD clean. Second version I obtained kept freezing my computer. Third version I obtained worked, but I couldn't figure it out. Recently I started playing it again, just to check if I was maybe too young and didn't get it, but still no luck :?
I hate it  But if you like it, hey, add it, and be sure to include the manual :P

Master of Magic? No problem, I have it, but I'll warn you - the game is even in it's last patched version somewhat buggy, probably it will not run in DosBox (I played it all the time under Windows 98 ).

My favourite is Kyrandia - the first in the series. I use to dream about this game. I still wish I could live on a beautiful, peaceful island filled with forests and waterfalls, and talking trees that you can live in and be lifted up into their branches by their roots, and cute, quirky characters. Perhaps it's just a dimension away...only need to find the portal.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Zork Nemesis. The music and 3D graphics were awesome, and the writing=dialogue, characters and plotting were the best ever. I felt as if I was learning the secrets of the universe while I was playing as there was so much occult philosophy contained in it as you searched for the quintessence - the secret of immortality. This game was deep and unforgetable.
Atlantis...was it called The Lost Tales? I wish I'd kept the CD as the music and graphics were fantastic and the island surrounded by sapphire seas and with the huge palace grounds were serious pieces of real estate that I could easily live in.

Wendy you're kidding me? You should really try it out it's great! And it adds a whole new twist to the Kyrandia mythos. I played it a few years ago on a hire CD, and it was kind of fun. But didn't like it as much as the first two. Remember Malcolm's mood meter? You could make him mean or nice by changing the settings. It was interesting how they explained away Malcolm supposedly killing the King and Queen by saying he was only trying to stop the 'enchanted knife'. :)

Well, some people like some games, others not.
Like me - I simply love Dungeon Keeper 1, but hate Dungeon Keeper 2 because it's mostly not the same like Dungeon Keeper 1: for it's time, the graphics aren't as good as in Part 1, nor are the sounds, and the ability to look monster statistics, like their damage, armor, strength and like was removed from the second part, which, I think is mean. Still, some people seem to love it too, even if they played Dungeon Keeper 1...

It was the last real C&C game (with kane and all)
It had a great feeling of dread
as if the war you are fighting is already lost.
Earth is already in ruins. All the terrible wars before (Red Alert and C&C) were futile.

heh, thats the opinion of every c&c fan.
According to them (and me) Red Alert 2 and C&C:generals aren't worthy of the title C&C.
A rather famous member of the C&C fan-network called Cypher once said "Red Alert 2 is the dumbed down comicbook-version of Red Alert"
And I agree. The Soviets in the original red Alert were much more fearsome (in the first cutscene of the soviets in the original red alert, for example, they're talking about the effects of a new toxic gass and its effects on men, women and children. Much more evil than some guy with wires sticking out of his head)
Tiberian Sun was beginning to decrease in quality. But it still had some rather gruesome moments (like when they slit Hassan's throat... if you remember that)

Metroid was great, wizards and warriors was a lot of fun, but got confusing very quickly! If you have a nintendo emulator, you should look into getting solstice, that game ruled. You played this little wizard who was in this huge maze with creatures everywhere. The catch was that you couldn't fight the creatures you had to avoid them or use potions against them. Your main goal was to find the four keys as well as all 8 pieces of the magic staff to beat the game. What a great game!! They don't make games like this anymore!!

I love colin mcrae 4 and i posted my times on......but it seems there are a lot of cheaters that ruin the competition and the fun....
For example i had my best time with an Audi Quattro (550 BHP) on a certain special stage and i was really flying......i post my time on the web just to find out that there is a Saxo (1.6L FWD) one minute faster than me.....that's just impossible :P

Well, sometimes it's still possible, with hard try and, perhaps, some tricks (abbreviation or like, I don't know the game, but I think of similar other games I played). And 1 minute is not that much more to be cheated, I guess...

Really if you play the game u will understand :) in a Special stage of around 2 min. and 23 seconds with the fastest car (for that stage at least) versus a seriously weaker car, while flying over the stage, getting beaten or even beat it with a small difference is to be considered as cheating.....not loosing by one minute...... it means that when he finished the stage i was still halfway in...... just to test my curiocity i drove the same car the cheater used......well i was around 30 seconds slower than my best time hehehe so i went to the next step.... i calculated his average speed and it was around 180km/h and remember over a twisty, narrow gravel stage, while the car's top speed even with the long gear ratio gearbox (which is not the best suited) is around 180 km/h.......it's impossible to just drive flat out on 6th gear alone, let alone that there a lot of 180 degrees turns taken with 2nd gear and around 50km/h if u r good with a good car....
i am not saying nobody can best my time.......surely that can happen but i guess it would be no more than one or two seconds....
running one special stage all the time until u get it perfectly is like Formula 1 qualifyings, just tenths of a second seperate the first few cars, and only a couple up to 4 seconds the first from the last car....u will never see double times....
to put it in other words :)
imagine u have a Ferrari and an other guy has standard 1.3L saloon car
and u decide to drag race him and you do perfect shifts everything perfect and still beats you by far....... is it possible??? (no unless u had no wheels) that's the difference between the cars we had hehe.....

Well, cheaters seem to appear in all games today - Diablo II, Warcraft III, Neverwinter Nights and so on. Seems like the people get globally too lazy to play it the fun way...
Btw., do you or anyone else know Re-Volt? It's a racing game from 1999-2000, but from a perspective of a toy-car. The levels in the game are because of that really interesting looking and very fun making and the graphics in the game are very modern and good (with 800x600 or higher) and steering the cars is also not a big deal. Because of that this is one of my more favourite games, although I don't like any other racing games that much.

But back on topic for me. Who here remembers one of the best RPG's ever? Excelsior Phase One: Lysandia.

I want to get 2004 but I havent gotten around to buying it yet, played it once in a internet cafe and it was even better than 2003.

*chucks in her two cents*
Wishbringer (My first pc game ever!)
All Early Sierra Games, Period. (That is, up until about Phantasmagoria, which was still pretty nifty. I wanted to lay siege to the studios when they started coming out with tripe such as KQ7 (travesty!!) and Shivers (although I still enjoyed Rama in deference to Arthur C. Clark.)
Zak McKraken & the Alien Mindbenders + Maniac Mansion. (Irreverence is fun, and so is getting suspended in third grade for tracing women in bikinis from game inserts & showing them to my innocent classmates, buahaha.)
I actually like Deus Ex the most, I think it has a great mix of the elements that I want to make a game feel fun to play. First: you are superior, I would like to have a little more adminstrating power but just the fact that you are a super soldier is relly good when you hear enemies say stuff like "They say these guys can disappear whenever they want to" when you hide from thier view.
And it also has some places where you can feel safe for a while, not like the Max Payne games(mostley the first), where you always are high tuned and ready to spring on any movement, I can tell that after 2 hours of: getting shot, reload, do bullet time, save, get shoot, reload (OK, I may not be the best on Max Payne) but after a while I lost the game becuse of this. Deus Ex has places like bases, cities, shops that there are no enemies.
Also adding a small but interesting RPG stylish chance to customize your characthers weapons, skills, nano-techs.
Not to mention that your JC (the main characther) is very smart and has a lot of knownledge about the world he lives in, so that you can choose dialog options that are very smart.

Alexei Pajitnov would agree with you. ;) He's the creator, though he never saw a ruble (or dollar, or euro) for it. If you like his games, though, you might try his puzzle collection for Microsoft, Pandora's Box. It's not a timed puzzle, but a series of roughly 8 or 9 different puzzle types, with increasing difficulty levels, and a nominal plot. Very nicely done, and with good graphics. Most definitely not abandonware, but I've seen it going cheaply secondhand on Amazon and eBay.

Tetris is definately up there... the best game I encountered is Fallout.
I've got myself bit of a hard decision here!
Well i guess the list would be:
Prince of persia 1 (die Jaffar!!)
Heroes of might and magic 2
Dune 2
C&C (first one!)
UFO: Enemy unknown and Terror from the deep
CIV 1 & 2
....
I could go on whole night like this :D
