Now here’s a wrestling game with a twist. This game features three famous WWF wrestlers (Hulk Hogan, Randy “Macho Man” Savage, and Ted Dibiase “The Million Dollar Man”), but instead of controlling their moves, you need to select them.

Unlike any other wrestling game this isn’t an action packed quick moving game. It’s a turn based strategy game actually. You don’t directly control your wrestler. You can select the move he should perform. When both you and your opponent select a move the computer calculates who’s likelier to succeed in executing the move. After that a little sequence is shown and you’re ready for the next move.

Unfortunately there’s no clear way of telling which move will be successful, so it’s hard to decide. You can always wait to see what the other guy will do, but you shouldn’t only react, you need to take initiative as well.

The concept itself is very original and quite good, but can become frustrating if you aren’t able to execute a move. There is a manual that gives some background and tries to explain the moves, but there’s always the element of chance involved.

The graphics in the game are actually stunning. You’ll get a digitalized picture with 16 colors (EGA graphics) of the real people. You’ll see the wrestlers, their managers, the crowd etc. You’ll even see the legendary announcer Fink introduce both opponents as they make their way down the isle.

The sounds are decent, but nothing more then that. You’ll hear some special update sounds when wrestlers give a little interview before the match, you’ll hear the bell and the crowd noises and you’ll hear the march-in music of the wrestlers (although at that time Ted Dibiase still didn’t have one).

Controlling the wrestlers:
As I said before, you select the moves. The keys for player one (Hulk) are q and y for up and down and h to select the move. For the opponent (Savage or Dibiase) arrow up and down and enter to select. You can also control the characters with joystick and the game even offers you a possibility to play via the dial up connection (but this hasn’t been tested).

The game was originally made for two disks each containing one match. After extracting the game you’ll need to start either MLW2s for the match Hogan vs. Savage, or MLW2d for the match Hogan vs. Dibiase.
