Dear Abandonia visitors: Help us keep Abandonia free with a small donation. Abandonia is like an old gaming arcade with only original games. Abandonia helps you have fun four hours and years. If Abandonia is useful to you, please help us forget fundraising and get back to Abandonia.

When Abandonia was founded it was to collect and present all old games where the copyright protection had been abandoned, hence the term ’abandonware’ and the site name Abandonia.com. We are still keeping the site open and free and will appreciate your support to help it stay that way.

‐ Thank you from the Abandonia Team

Scrabble is one of those board games that has a few decades long tradition of being played. It is in my opinion also one of the examples of an educational board games, since it does improve on your vocabulary and in the case of the English game also spelling.

You get seven letter tiles and each letter is worth a different number of points. You must place the tiles on the board in such a manner that they form full English words (either from left to the right, or from up to down). Every letter that is placed on a blue square will count double (or triple if dark blue) and if a word goes over a pink square the whole word is worth double (or triple if it goes over a red square). The first word needs to go over the middle of the board and every new word must be connected to a previously made (so you can’t randomly start a word on a completely different part of the board). Once you place the tiles they must all form a word (in case you added something that touches more then one word on the board).

Now all the words are taken from the dictionary, but this computerized game has a nice feature of adding words. So if the computer doesn’t recognize the word you’ve made, you can add it to its dictionary (but please, don’t abuse this).

The winner of the game is naturally the person who has the most points at the end of the game and the game ends when a player can get rid of all the tiles and there are no more to be drawn from the bag – or when no player can make another word (oh, if you get rid of all the tiles, either during he game or at the end when you place your last one) you also receive a hefty bonus.

The game features only basic sounds, which aren’t really worth mentioning and the graphics are… well… they are true to the board game, but that doesn’t say much, because the game is more of a thinking game then a game of visual effects.

Anyway, all who enjoy the original board game can play against the computer and improve on their skills (or practice their English), or they can play against a human player, so there will be no more fights about which are real words and which aren’t. Enjoy!
